President of Latvia is head of state and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces of Republic of Latvia. Each president to date, except Gustavs Zemgals, has served two terms. The term of office is four years. Before 1997 it was three years. In the event of absence of the President the Speaker of Saeima assumes the duties of the President, for example after restoration of independence of Latvia Anatolijs Gorbunovs was acting president from 1991 to 1993.
