- William Drennan(1754-1820), a belfast born physician, poet, educationalist and political radical, was one of the chief architects of the Society of United Irishmen.
- James Orr (1770-1816) also known as the Bard of Ballycarry, was the foremost of the Ulster Weaver Poets. He joined the Society of United Irishmen in 1791 and took part in the Irish Rebellion of 1798.
