List of North American Volkswagen engines

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Volkswagen does not have engine families in the same way most other manufacturers do. Engines are commonly known by their name only, and Volkswagen has been known to apply many different codes to seemingly identical engines.

[edit] Diesel

[edit] Indirect Injection

4 Cylinder

Volkswagen's 4 cylinder diesel started out life as the gas-fueled 827 series. The series ranges in size, from the original 1.5 l, to the enlarged 1.9 l. Some variants came with turbos and catalytic converters.

Boxer Diesel

This engine was used for only one year, after it became apparent that the efficiency gained from a diesel engine was not worth the severe lack of performance.

5 Cylinder

  • Code AAB, Template:Convert/HP, 2.4 l, 1992-1998 Eurovan

[edit] Direct Injection

Currently, all diesels offered by Volkswagen are direct injection, and all direct injection diesels are turbocharged (TDI). This engine started as a 5 cylinder Audi diesel in 1989 (itself derived from the 827 series), and got bumped back to 4 cylinders for Volkswagen's use. It is related (through several engine families) to the 827 series, indirect injection diesels, 16 valves, and 5 cylinder gas engines.

  • Code DH, 82HP, 1.9 l, Digijet injection, 1983-1985
  • Code MV, 95HP, 2.1 l, Digifant II injection, 1986-1992

[edit] 827 Series

Known classically as the "counterflow 8 valve", this engine series is the root of most all of Volkswagen's engines in the 70s, 80s and 90s. It got its start as an Audi-designed engine, for the DKW/Volkswagen K70. It has spawned 5 cylinder, diesel, crossflow, turbo, supercharged, and 16 valve variants. While mostly retired, the "second cousin" of the 827 is still alive, known as the TDI.

[edit] 113 Series

This engine is a derivative of the classic 827 series. It includes a crossflow instead of counterflow head.

  • Code ABA, AEG, AVH, AZG, BBW, BDC, BER, BEV, and BGD, Template:Convert/HP, 2.0 l, 1993-Present Golf, Jetta, Passat, New Beetle

[edit] 16 Valve

The 16 valve Volkswagen engine is the same as the 827 series, but with a 16 valve head attached.

[edit] 1.8T

Volkswagen's ubiquitous 1.8T engine has seen many improvements over the years, and lots of use in several vehicles, sometimes mounted longitudinally, sometimes transverse.

[edit] 5 Cylinder

Older VW inline 5 cylinder engines are an adaptation of the Audi 5 cylinder engine (for use in the Audi 4000-derived Quantum). Eurovan 5 cylinders are a 2.0 liter crossflow 8 valve engine with an extra cylinder and balance rods added. Volkswagen most recently came out with a 5 cylinder developed (loosely) from half of a Lamborghini Gallardo V10.

  • Code WE, Template:Convert/HP, 2.1 l, 1983 Quantum
  • Code KM, Template:Convert/HP, 2.1 l, 1984-1985 Quantum

[edit] 6 Cylinder

[edit] VR6

Volkswagen's potent VR6 engine was originally conceived as a diesel, but later found itself as a gas engine. It was designed to fit a 6 cylinder engine in a car designed for an inline 4 cylinder.

  • Code AAA, Template:Convert/HP, 2.8 l, 1990-1997 Golf, Jetta, Passat, Corrado
  • Code AES, Template:Convert/HP, 2.8 l, 1997-2000 Eurovan

  • Code AFP and BDF, Template:Convert/HP, 2.8 l, 1999.5-2004 Golf, Jetta
  • Code BJS, Template:Convert/HP, 3.2 l, 2004 Golf R32
  • Code BAA and BMX, Template:Convert/HP, 3.2 l, 2003-2007 Touareg

  • Code BUB, Template:Convert/HP, 3.2 l, 2007-Present Eos, FSI

[edit] V6

Volkswagen used a V6 in the B5 Passat, because the drivetrain was longitudinally mounted. Like the VR6, it was 2.8 liters in size, but unlike the VR6, it was a true 60 degree V6, and had 30 valves.

  • Code AMM, AMX, ATQ, and AHA, Template:Convert/HP, 2.8 l, 1998-2005 Passat

[edit] 8 Cylinder

[edit] V8

Volkswagen has only used one V8 design, but, like it's other engines, bumps in power necessitated new engine codes. Only the Phaeton and Touareg have used a V8 engine.

  • Code BGH, Template:Convert/HP, 4.2 l, 2003-2006 Phaeton
  • Code AXQ, 310, 4.2 l, 2002-2007 Touraeg
  • Code BAR, 349, 4.2 l, 2006-2007 Touraeg, FSI

[edit] W8

Volkswagen has only built a single W8, for the 2002-2004 Passat. It was a test bed for the W technology, which made it into the W12 (shown below) and the W16, as used in the Bugatti Veyron.

  • Code BDP, Template:Convert/HP, 4.0 l, 2002-2004 Passat W8

[edit] 12 Cylinder

[edit] W12

Volkswagen has only used one W12 in their vehicles, though a bump in power in 2006 saw a new engine code.

  • Code BAP, Template:Convert/HP, 6.0 l, 2003-2005 Phaeton
  • Code BRP, Template:Convert/HP, 6.0 l, 2006 Phaeton
