New Mexico state highways underwent extensive re-numbering during the 1980s, when many longer highways were broken up into shorter segments each with their own state highway numbers. The result was a proliferation of numbered state highways, most of the newer ones having three-digit numbers. Many state highways are very short (some less than a mile long) and serve to connect Interstate highways with local streets and roads.
