Cecilia Ong, born in 1951, is considered by many as the first Sarawakian to have written and published a significant collection of original short stories in English. Her first book, pulished in 2004, was Short stories from Sarawak: Death of a longhouse and other stories, a collection of thirty-five original short stories in English. There are other published Sarawakian writers in English, most notably Angela Yong with six books to her name. However, her work consists of a book of Foochow Proverbs tranlated into English, a collection of retold stories from the 'South Seas' and three books of anecdotes. Others in the mid-60s and 70s contributed a short story now and then to the Borneo Literature Bureau (BLB), a government-funded organization that encouraged the writing and publication of short stories in Sarawak and Sabah, the two east Malaysian states in Borneo.
