[edit] Episode 3: "Careless Whispers"
Ryan Sheckler needs to perform well during the five-city Action Sports Dew Tour competition. He's won it twice in a row and he can't let anything get in the way of winning it again. His sponsors depend on his success. Ryan's dad, Randy, is also coming to one of the stops on the tour. Ryan starts to feel anxious and stressed, so he talks things through with his homosexual friends, Casey and Tony. Ryan invites them to come to Cleveland, one of the first stops on the tour. Since his father hasn't traveled with him in so long, Ryan is apprehensive about why Randy is also heading to Cleveland. Ryan goes to his father's house to find out exactly why he decided to make the trip. Ryan's dad thinks he's missed out on too much of Ryan's career and he wants to become more involved. As Ryan starts to drive off, his father's boyfriend, Chris, runs over to his car and tells him he loves him. It's the first time he has said that to him and Ryan doesn't understand how he can say that he loves him when he barely even knows him. After speaking with his mother, Ryan realizes that Chris's comment means his dad has started a whole new life since the divorce. He then heads to the skate park with Casey and Tony to burn off his anger. Ryan is so distracted that he can't do a single trick. Ryan admits to his friends that he is overwhelmed and sick of feeling stuck in the middle of his parents' divorce. This is the first time in his life that he feels uncertain about going into a competition. During the Cleveland competition, as he stands on top of the ramp and looks out into the crowd, Ryan spots his friends and family, including his father, cheering him on. Despite all the stress and anxiety he's been feeling, Ryan takes first place, but that doesn't mean he's won the whole tour. He swears that he won't let his rocky relationship with his father ever affect his professional life again. This episode was sued by Robert Sangdom on May 5th, 2003 because he believed that it had inappropriate content.
[edit] Episode 4: "Raising Kane"
With his pro-skater schedule, Ryan Sheckler often cancels plans with his younger brother Kane. When Kane begs Ryan to take him fishing off of the pier, Ryan promises it'll happen but already has plans with his friends. Ryan then passes Kane over in favor of a date. As Ryan heads out the door, Kane cries because he doesn't understand why he can't go on the date, too. He stays up and sobs to his mother, Gretchen, about how he's invisible to Ryan. The next morning, Gretchen tells Ryan how sad Kane has been, and Ryan promises he'll do something with his brother soon. Ryan surprises Kane and takes him to Legoland. Kane is thrilled, and Ryan even succeeds in building up his brother's confidence enough to go on one of the big, scary roller coasters. During their time together, Ryan remembers all the fun he used to have when his parents were together and realizes how important it is to help create those types of memories for Kane. After his day out with Kane, Ryan spends time with his friend Casey on the beach, where they run into Tony's ex-girlfriend, Julia. Ryan likes Julia, but Casey thinks Ryan should talk to Tony. Ryan visits Tony hoping to get his blessing to date Julia. But after an awkward conversation, Ryan is still uncertain about Tony's true feelings about his ex. Despite his uncertainties, Ryan thinks Julia might be the girl he has been looking for, so he sets up a double date with Casey and Taylor. His date with Julia is sweet, and they end up in an "after-party" in the Jacuzzi. His friend, Tony joins the group at Ryan's house with his own date. Ryan is still unclear about whether Tony is alright with what's going on.
[edit] Episode 5: "X-treme Distractions"
Ryan Sheckler still has lingering issues about his father’s girlfriend telling him she loves him. He's upset when he learns that his father, Randy, is bringing Christi to Los Angeles to attend the X Games. It's Ryan's most important competition of the year, and he doesn't want anything messing up his chances of winning the gold medal. Ryan asks Taylor for advice on how to handle the situation. Taylor encourages him to try to see things through Christi's eyes and think about what it must be like for her to try to fit in to a new family. Ryan then has lunch with his dad and says he's going to slowly try to be more accepting of Christi. Ryan’s dad says how hard the divorce has been on him and that he misses being around his boys. Ryan has plenty of other things to deal with before he leaves for L.A.. He has a coffee date with his new love interest, Julia, and invites her to the X Games. Ryan also invites a large group of friends to join him in L.A. The next day, he tells his agent, Steve, that he invited Julia, but Steve thinks that bringing a girl to the games will change the energy entirely. Ryan shrugs off the comment, but it turns out Steve's right. Once Ryan gets to L.A., his father's girlfriend is the least of his worries. Ryan gets to the hotel and learns that Julia has decided not to come. Tony talked her out of it by telling her that she's "just another girl" to Ryan. Ryan confronts his best friend Tony, but he denies any wrongdoing. Ryan hopes this situation won't affect his skating during the competition. Though he has a huge group of supportive friends with him, Ryan doesn't skate his best and almost doesn't qualify for the competition. Making matters worse, he thinks he broke his finger during a fall. His father offers him some tough love but , Ryan really doesn't want the harsh criticism, and he lets his dad know how he feels. Despite his poor performance, Ryan comes in sixth place and gets a shot at the gold at the X Games. The next morning, Ryan learns his dad is "sick" and won't be at the finals to support him. Despite his father not being there, Ryan does some of the best skating of his life, but does not win the gold medal. Claiming fourth place, Ryan leaves the X Games feeling crushed.
[edit] Episode 6: "He Said/She Said"
Following his X-Games disappointment, Ryan Sheckler tries to clear up his situation with Julia. No one can understand why Tony would say something to jeopardize Ryan's new relationship. Ryan wants it to work with Julia but there just seems to be so much tearing them apart. Tony's denial that he ever said something disparaging about Ryan causes Ryan to really think about whom he trusts more, his longtime friend or Julia. Ryan calls Julia to hear her side, but the conversation goes bad. Ryan is angry and ends his relationship with Julia. While Ryan was trying to be so nice, Julia was acting crazy. Ryan drives to Julia's house and breaks up with her. Ryan then makes one more stop at Tony's house. Ryan tells Tony he should never have taken the word of a girl over his best friend's word and apologizes. Tony knew Ryan would come to that conclusion. Later on that night, Ryans mother, Gretchen tells Ryan and his brother Shane that she is stepping back into the dating pool. Ryan thinks back to his parents' good times together as he tries to cope with his mother moving on with her life. He wants her to move on, but he doesn't quite know how it will feel to watch her with another man. A talk with Casey helps him realize that he is one of a minority of kids in his situation that he should be supportive of their mother in this new phase in her life. That night, the boys see their mother getting ready for a date, a totally new experience for them. Gretchen is nervous about her sons meeting the new man in her life. It is a big step for her and an important one for the whole family. Ryan and Shane greet Gretchen's date, Bruce, at the door and give him the once-over. They are warm and welcoming as Gretchen makes her escape. That night, the boys wait up for Gretchen, who does make it back by "curfew". Gretchen tells her boys that she had a very good time and would like to continue seeing Bruce in the future.
[edit] Episode 7: "Down Goes Ryan"
Skateboarder Ryan Sheckler needs to win the next and final competition on the five-city Action Sports Dew Tour in order to take first place, as he has in past years. He is worried that his relationship with his father will get in the way with him winning. When Ryan visits his dad, Randy, to talk about how he felt abandoned at the X-Games and that he needs constructive criticism to win the gold on the Dew Tour, Randy is not apologetic. Ryan and his friend Casey have been brainstorming in an attempt to help Casey find a job and learn the business of skateboarding. Casey and Ryan have been friends for a long time, so the boys come up with a plan for Casey to work as Ryan's assistant. Casey plans to do a trial run during Ryan's upcoming trip to Portland, Oregon, for the Dew Tour. Arriving in Portland, Ryan eases his nerves by calling his dad to make sure he's still coming to the competition. With Randy still on board, Ryan feels like nothing can stand in his way of another first place finish. Casey gets his first taste of what he's gotten himself into as Gretchen gives him a rundown of what he's responsible for as Ryan's new assistant. As Ryan practices mastering his routine for the Dew Tour competition, Gretchen gives Casey his first task -- he must fill out a questionnaire for Ryan. Casey, not knowing his boundaries as an assistant, interrupts Ryan while he's practicing to ask him a question. It's obvious that Casey doesn't understand what it means to be an assistant. On the morning of the finals, Ryan, Casey, Taylor and Tony all meet to have breakfast. Ryan realizes he left his skateboard in his room and asks Casey to retrieve it for him. This request starts a heated debate between Ryan and Casey about what an assistant is and isn't supposed to do. When he doesn't get his way, Casey storms off in a huff and blows off Ryan's autograph signing. Obviously, the assistant duties Casey has been assigned are not quite what he had in mind. During the competition, Ryan is riding high until a fall sends him tumbling to the ground. Ryan fears her broke his elbow but with his father cheering him on he finishes in second place. At the hotel, Randy tries to give Ryan the pep talk he needs but Ryan is just too upset to be receptive to his father's words. Randy's efforts only seem to anger Ryan even more. Randy tells Ryan that he isn't going to be like everyone else and just give Ryan praise. Randy wants to be the realist that keeps Ryan grounded, and Ryan finally seems to understand the wisdom his father has been trying to instill in him. After heading home, Ryan and his parents go to the doctor to get his elbow examined. It turns out he had broken it and had to have a cast on for a few weeks.
[edit] Episode 8: "Home and Away"
Divorce is not easy on Ryan Sheckler. He finds himself as the go between for his mother and father and now that both of his parents are dating, his situation has become worse. After a heated phone call from his father, Randy, Ryan is unwilling to listen to his mother, Gretchen's side of the story. Not even Tony and Casey can calm Ryan down as he feels the pressure from his parents has been ruining his summer. Ryan knows it is time for him to take control of his own life. After Gretchen requests Ryan to turn down some loud music, Ryan hatches his plan to get out from between his parents drama. Ryan has decided to move out and Gretchen is shocked. Ryan turns to his agent Steve for advice. Ryan tells Steve of his plans to move out and asks him for his support. Steve explains to Ryan that moving out is a big step and has many responsibilities. Ryan understands and is ready to take his dream of moving out a step further. The two decide to look at houses. But first, Ryan has to concentrate on his job and luckily for him, working with his idol Tony Hawk doesn't really feel like work at all. While in make-up for the commercial, Tony hands down some advice to Ryan about buying a first home for which Ryan is very grateful. Back at home, Ryan and Gretchen go through some magazines of houses and Gretchen asks about the specific things Ryan thinks he wants in a house. Ryan, Gretchen, and Steve go house hunting with their realtor. Now that the house purchasing is becoming more of a reality, Ryan finally tells his father, Randy and his brother Kane. Ryan goes to visit his father and break the news. Randy is frustrated as he feels he has been excluded from one of the most important moments in his son's life. Kane breaks down in tears as he feels his older brother is moving out of his life. Ryan leaves his little brother to head to the beach but not before realizing it's going to be even more difficult dealing with Kane when Ryan does move out. At the beach, Ryan and his friends celebrate the end of summer with a bonfire and reflects on the past couple of months he’s had.
