List of Kakapo

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Every known Kakapo has been given a name by Kakapo Recovery Programme officials. Many of the older birds were given English language names, but more recent chicks have been given Māori names. Some Kakapo, such as Richard Henry and Arab, are named after individuals who have provided assistance to the preservation efforts. In July 2004, three Kakapo died[citation needed]. Four chicks survived from the 2004 breeding season. One male Kakapo died in the New Zealand winter of 2005, bringing the population to 86[citation needed]. In April of 2008, the Kakapo population grew to 93[1] with the hatching of seven chicks,[2] then fell to 92 due to the death of Bill.[3] An eighth chick had hatched in the 2008 breeding season, but was found dead a few days later.[4] The 2008 chicks have all been nicknamed, but will not be formally named until they have fledged.[2] Untill 29.05.2008: 6 chicks of the breeding season 2008 survived, bringing the total Kapapo population to 91.
