[edit] The Three Sacred Treasures

The characters referred to as "The Three Sacred Treasures" are descendants of those that sealed Orochi orignally. With the exception of Maki who was killed by Goenitz and did not actually take part in a tournament save for a mirror double of herself in King of Fighters 2003, the characters are usually grouped as a team and involved in the true ending for most related KoF games.

Chizuru Kagura (神楽 ちづる Kagura Chizuru?) whose real name is Chizuru Yata (八咫 ちづる Yata Chizuru?), made her character debut in The King of Fighters '96 as a mid-boss and the sponsor of the KoF tournament that year. Later, in The King of Fighters '97 she appeared as a normal participant in the year's Women Team. Like Kyo and Iori, she is a member of the clan that holds one of the three sacred artifacts that originally sealed the serpent monster Orochi 1,800 years ago: the Yata no Kagami or Yata Mirror. Due to the rivals' attribution towards one another, Chizuru is usually the one who has to keep the trio together. She was created in the image of anime and manga character, Yohko Shiraki, from the Tomorrow's Joe manga series.[1]

Chizuru is the younger of the two heiresses of the Yata clan, the other being her older twin sister Maki Kagura. As the heiress of the Yata, she was raised as a priestess and maintain the duty of keeping the diligent seal on Orochi intact. One night, Goenitz visited their home with intentions to destroy the seal. Maki confronts him, but since the power of their clan can not fight the Orochi without the help of the other two clans and Goenitz's strength as one of the Heavenly Kings was too great, she loses and is mortally wounded. Goenitz destroys the seal and leaves with the satisfaction of a weak but released Orochi. Before her death, Maki passes on the responsibilities of the seal to Chizuru, begging her to join the three clans together once again to defeat Orochi.

Ten years afterwards, Chizuru has become a very successful and prestigious business woman under the family name Kagura. She secretly kept track with the King of Fighters tournament since it began with Geese Howard and hosts the tournament in 1996 in hopes of entreating Kyo and Iori to help her replace the broken seal. Though both men protest, the three of them succeed in their task at the climax of The King of Fighters '97.[2] She hosts another King of Fighters tournament in 2003 with intentions similar to her previous attempt. During the tournament, however, it is revealed that Chizuru was under mind-control by a mysterious puppeteer and member from His Distant Land, Botan. Ironically, she ends up using the power of the Yata mirror for the benefit of the very force she was trying to combat and fights alongside an illusion of her sister Maki as one of the game's sub-bosses. Eventually, she breaks free from Botan's control and tries to restore the seal of Orochi, but Ash steals her powers before she can. She survives the attack but can no longer participate in fights, asking Kyo's self-proclaimed disciple Shingo Yabuki to fill her spot in The King of Fighters XI.[3]

She fights with the power of illusions, often using them to project duplicates of herself to attack from a distance or to travel herself across the screen. She also has the power to seal her opponent's moveset for a time. Her moves were very powerful when first introduced -often replicating several copies of herself at once- but was toned down in her later appearances.

Maki Kagura (神楽 マキ Kagura Maki?) is a character who has been known to players since The King of Fighters '96, but made her debut as a mid-boos in The King of Fighters 2003. Maki is the late elder sister of Chizuru Kagura, also from the Yata clan. Not much is known about her, except she was killed trying to protect the seal of Orochi against the leader of the Hakketsushū, Goenitz. The Maki who appears in The King of Fighters 2003 is an illusion created by the Mirror of Yata by Chizuru, who was, at the time, under the control of Botan, a member of Those From The Past. It was mentioned in the anniversary website that they actually planned for Maki to have shorter hair (as suggested by the image gallery in The King of Fighters '97) but was later scrapped due to time constraints.

Chris (クリス Kurisu?) is a character from SNK Playmore's King of Fighters series of fighting games who is a member of the New Face Team in KOF '97. He is one of the Four Heavenly Kings of Orochi, and is the dark Orochi counterpart to Kyo in regards of his ability to wield dark flames.[5] He is also the chosen host for Orochi's awakened spirit, a concept that began early in the game's production. He was designed as a character who can "kill with an innocent smile."[6]

His true origin is shrouded in mystery. What is known is that he, along with Yashiro and Shermie, entered King of Fighters 1997 to form the New Face Team. They initially enter due to Yashiro's grudge against Iori and his band, but as the tournament progresses, their Orochi blood awakens them to be three of the "Four Heavenly Kings" (the first being Goenitz). As loyal members of Orochi, they continue to gather power to resurrect Orochi through Chris' body. They succeed but the Three Sacred Treasures (Kyo, Iori, and Chizuru) defeat him. In the New Face team's ending, all three members sacrifice themselves in hopes of resurrecting Orochi.[7]

His quote during his SDM makes a reference to another SNK game, Crystalis. In Gamest's 1997 Heroes Collection, Chris was voted as the staff's twentieth favorite character.[8]

Goenitz (ゲーニッツ Gēnittsu?) is a video game character who made his first appearance in the Neo Geo fighting game, The King of Fighters '96 as the last boss, following Chizuru Kagura. He is one of the Four Heavenly Kings of Orochi, with the power to command wind. He wears a blue long-sleeved suit with black muffler secured by a golden chain, black boots and brown leather belt. His hair is blond on top, but the rest of his hair and beard are black. His trademark move is his Yonokaze (with the move's matching catchphrase being "Koko desu ka", meaning "Right here?"), wherein a nightside tornado comes up at random, slicing any foe it touches. Goenitz's full heavenly king title is "Fuki Susabu Kaze no Goenitz." (Goenitz of the Wildly-Blowing Wind), and his theme music is titled Trash Head, presumably poking fun at his hairstyle. Yoshinori Shima, his voice actor, also dubbed Eiji Kisaragi, Temjin (Art of Fighting 2) and Clark Steel.

Despite being an evil villain, Goenitz has a very polite personality, which is reflected in his winning poses (in one of them he bows at the camera, and he repeats it after performing his Yamidoukoku in SVC Chaos: SNK vs. Capcom) and his elegant, somewhat flowery speech. His occupation as a pastor may have to do with his respectful attitude. He has mannerisms that do show this and are seen through his spoken quotes; namely, his introduction, 2nd win pose and 3rd win pose, wherein he says in Japanese, "Pray to your God quickly!", "Repent while you still can." and "May God bless you!", respectively. Ironically, in a personality that would make him an enemy of humanity, but in perfect alignment with his alleged occupation, he also shows great hostility towards the infernal Demitri Maximoff and Red Arremer, precisely because of their association with darkness and Hell. He also implies his priestly backgrounds in some of his dialogs in SVC Chaos: SNK vs. Capcom and other characters call him a priest too. Moreover, his outfit also loosely suggest his alleged occupation. Even though influenced by Orochi, he sports the same "messiah" attitude that aspires to "save" people, expected from people of religious occupations. His specialty however, with the powers of Orochi, is to dispose of people; disbelievers in particular.

A few of Goenitz's techniques share the same names as some of Iori Yagami's, except with "Neo" placed in front of them. These moves are Neo Deadly Flower (three-part punch combo) and Neo Maiden Masher (SDM rush assault, which ends with a tornado blast instead of Iori's trademark purple fire). The similarity may have something to do with both character's involvement in the Orochi Saga. In the original Japanese, these are prefaced instead by "shin", meaning "true", suggesting that the Yasakani arts with those names were inspired or taught by the Hakketsushū.

Fighting style Divine Orochi Power

Orochi (オロチ Orochi?) in The King of Fighters one of the series main villains and the final boss of The King of Fighters '97. His character origin is another interpretation of the mythical eight headed serpent, Yamata no Orochi. In the KOF series, he was sealed 1,800 years ago by the three sacred treasures of Japan. The three clan's descendants are charged with protecting the seal over him. In KOF '97, his spirit possesses Chris' body to fight in the mortal realm.[9] He was sealed again at the climax of the '97 tournament but the seal surrounding him has been broken in recent games; the reasons why are still unknown but it revolves around awakening him again.[10]

Orochi has eight mortal followers in his name referred to as the "Hakketsushū" (misspelled "Hakkesshu" in the English translation).[11] Two are assassins (Mature and Vice), and two are elementalists (Ryuji Yamazaki and Gaidell, Leona's biological father). Four of them are powerful elemental warriors called "The Four Heavenly Kings" (Goenitz, Shermie, Yashiro, and Chris). They are the most loyal to Orochi, working to set him free from the concealment by the Yata clan. Members of his bloodline are known to undergo a berserker stage known as the "Riot of Blood". Though cases are relatively rare,[12] users become incoherent and attempt to kill any in their path. They often have no memory of their actions and are prone to being exceedingly violent. The known afflicted descendants are Iori Yagami and Leona.

A clone of Orochi appeared as a boss in Neo Geo Battle Coliseum. He was named Mizuchi and also needed a young user to possess. His powers are barely similar to the original Orochi, although most of his basic moves and some of his special moves look and function somewhat like the original. Unlike Orochi, Mizuchi has crouching animations and moves making him more versatile. Interestingly enough, most of Mizuchi's moves are based on giant prismatic "snowflakes" which may have something to do with his name (Mizu meaning water in Japanese).

Shermie (シェルミー Sherumī?) is a videogame character in the King of Fighters series who first appeared in The King of Fighters '97 as a member of the New Face Team. She is one of the Four Heavenly Kings of Orochi who is the dark counterpart to Benimaru Nikaido. Shermie and Angel have the largest bust measurement of all KOF females (92 cm). Her hairstyle is recognizable in that her bangs covers her eyes and is tied in a split ponytail at the back. It is stated on her profile on KOF 10th she was based on the character Fujiko Mine from the anime Lupin the 3rd. She also appears in the hand-held game, SNK Gals' Fighters. Aside from the main body of the KOF series, Shermie also stars in her own character image album.[13]

The true origins of the Orochi fighter known as Shermie are shrouded in mystery. She, along with Yashiro Nanakase and Chris formed a music band called "CYS" (based on the first letter of the name of each member), where Shermie played the keyboards. They enter the KOF tournament due to Yashiro's grudge against rival band player, Iori Yagami. When she remembers her duties as one of the Four Heavenly Kings of Orochi, she uses the tournament to gather enough power to awaken Orochi, which is successful in Orochi's possession of Chris. The ending of the New Face Team in KOF '97 has Yashiro killing off both Shermie and Chris before committing suicide. It is believed that this ending, along with the fact that Yashiro and Shermie are willing to give their lives for the resurrection of the Orochi in the cinemas, reinforces the fact that the New Face Team most likely perished in this tournament.[7]

When not using her Orochi powers, Shermie relies on grappling as her combat style. Her grappling gameplay is further improved in KOF98, when she's given a follow-up ground attack, similar to Clark's elbow smash. Her grappling gameplay is further expanded in KOF2002, as she borrows some signature moves like Stone Cold Steve Austin's Stonecold Stunner. KOF2002 made Shermie more visually distracting, as her leotard is made more visually prominent, especially in her knockdown attack, something that could be seen occasionally in some of her grappling moves before.

Yashiro Nanakase (七枷 社 Nanakase Yashiro?) is a videogame character from the King of Fighters series as the leader of the New Face Team in KOF '97. He is one of the Four Heavenly Kings of Orochi and serves as the darker counterpart to Goro Daimon. His name means "Shrine of the Seven Shackles".

The true origins of the Orochi fighter known as Yashiro are shrouded in mystery. At one point, he formed a rock band with Chris and Shermie, with him playing the guitar. They were preparing to perform when the club they were scheduled at canceled them in favor of a jazz band featuring Iori Yagami. Upset at their loss and angered by "the man with red hair", Yashiro and his band steal the invitations from the American Sports Team and enter the KOF tournament.[14] During the tournament's duration, they remember their duties as the Four Heavenly Kings of Orochi and work to resurrect their lord by gathering fighters' energy. They succeed but, after Orochi's defeat and subsequent concealment, the trio sacrifice themselves to ensure their lord's survival.[7]

In KOF '97/98 Yashiro possessed a rushing punch combo attack and DM variation of it. This move was incredibly useful but was omitted in his '02 appearance. His HDM in that game, Logjammin reflects part of the move as it ends in his Duel Uppercut, although the start-up is completely different, utilizing a Shoulder Tackle instead of going right into the punch combo. Orochi Yashiro's moveset is similar to Goro Daimon (in the same way that Shermie's moveset is similar to Benimaru, and as Chris's moveset is similar to Kyo and Iori) as his role in the Heavenly Kings of Orochi is the King of the Earth, or ground. He even possesses a variation of Daimon's Heaven to Hell Drop DM, his version having differences in the animation style and a skull column appearing in the finish, a familiar ending to other fighters using the power of Orochi, including Rugal, Mature and Vice. In his KOF '97/98 appearance, Orochi Yashiro possessed the ability to summon power from the ground and project it into a blue beam attack. This technique, the DM Howling Earth, is missing from his '02 appearance. Instead Orochi Yashiro had a new, nearly unstoppable technique as his HDM called the Armageddon Fist, an incredibly fast, and unblockable dashing punch with an autoguard quality (through one hit attacks) that dealt over 50% damage.

In Gamest's 1997 Heroes Collection, Yashiro was voted as the staff's eleventh favorite character.[8]

Ash Crimson (アッシュ・クリムゾン Asshu Kurimuzon?) is the new protagonist for The King of Fighters 2003 who marks his first appearance in the series as the leader of the New Hero Team (composed also by Duo Lon and Shen Woo). He also appears in the ONA promotional series The King of Fighters: Another Day. Ash is designed with the intent of creating an "attractive evil character" with little changes done to him since conception.[15] His motives for entering are to take the powers of the descendants of the clans who sealed Orochi away 1,800 years ago (Kyo Kusanagi, Iori Yagami and Chizuru Kagura) for unknown purposes. He has been successful thus far, leaving Kyo as the last power he needs to steal.[16][17]

Ash is a clever trickster and serves as an anti-villain as well as an anti-hero in the series.[18] He is cunning and manipulative, often condescending friend or foe to his whim, and has ambiguous morals in his actions. He often gains his teammates through promises that he can fulfill, though he rarely specifies the means of granting them. One case in particular would be his teammates, Oswald and Shen Woo, as he pits them against one another to get their desires. Despite being seemingly frail by appearance, Ash is powerful as he was able to defeat Iori whilst in his Riot of Blood state seemingly with ease.

His moves are almost all named after months of the French Republican Calendar, except for his LDM Sans-culottes — it should be noted however that Sans-culottes may be referring to the Sansculottides, which were the last days of the year in that particular calendar. All of the moves, including Sans-culottes, refer to the French Revolution.

Many fans of KOF criticized Ash's movelist complaining about how similar it is to Guile's from Street Fighter. Other fans also claim that he resembles today's Chris Crocker on YouTube.

Some people commented that he probably is the personification of Susanoo in the game and need the three sacred treasures to destroy the Orochi once again.

Magaki (禍忌 Magaki?) is a fictional character in The King of Fighters series of fighting games. He's the new boss of KOF XI. Like the enigmatic Mukai, nothing is known about the fighter Magaki, save that he hosts The King of Fighters tournament, and knows Mukai. Like Mukai, Magaki wants to awaken Orochi and give Orochi's powers to his own master. He seems to have little respect for Mukai, as he mockingly imitates his pious manner of speech in the cutscene preceding the boss fight, and seems to look down on his caution toward humans. He also shows even less respect for humans in general, believing them to have little-to-no potential, and being weak overall. He also seems to have very little tolerance for not getting what he wants from others; in his backstory, he warns Shion of "betraying" him for having a similar opinion to Mukai, and promptly eliminates Shion for losing the KOF XI finals.

Like Mukai before him, after he was defeated he stood up, apparently unscathed, and after commenting that perhaps it was more than spirit that was needed to awaken Orochi, made his exit into another realm. However he was less lucky then Mukai; as he finally realised the error in his plan, and what was needed to awaken the Orochi, he was killed by Shion's spear, hurled from the dimensional rift he was escaping from. The next day, however, his body disappears. In the K' Team's ending, Heidern remarks that his team had obtained Magaki's dead body. However in the Ikari Team's ending, two girls came on Heidern's fleet and took Magaki's dead body away. Their farewell gift being an explosion on one of the vessels.

Magaki's fighting style seems to revolve around filling the screen with his energy attacks. He can fill the arena with teleporting energy balls, portals through which he can grab the opponent, or his LDM, which is a massive flow of energy that literally covers the screen.

Mukai in The King Of Fighters 2003

Mukai (ムカイ Mukai?, also written as 無界) is a video game character in the King of Fighters series. He made his first appearance in The King of Fighters 2003 as the final boss. Mukai wears a short robe that is tied with a sash. His appearance was designed with the concept of petrification in mind. The origins of the mysterious Mukai are unknown. He made a prompt appearance in the King of Fighters 2003 tournament seeking strong opponents and to test his strength. It is also strongly implied he is somehow connected to the Orochi bloodline and the wills and goals of Ash Crimson (and hence the Three Sacred Treasures). He is a member of a secret organization, known as "Those from the Distant Land" (遙けし彼の地より出づる者達 Harukeshi Ka no Chi yori Izuru Monotachi?). Shadows of his fellow members can be seen resting with Mukai on a giant hand after the game's end. He speaks in very pious, grandiose declarations, but appears to have a cautious attitude toward the potential of humans (much to the chagrin of his ally, Magaki). Before facing him in KOF2K3, Mukai reveals that his organization was behind the new KOF tournament, and his plans did not involve him directly intervening. He states that the Orochi seal has been broken, and the power of the Orochi has entered his master (who this is has yet to be seen, but it can be surmised that this master is the cloaked figure seen after beating him, who is the only one of his group yet to appear). He then engages in combat with the winning team, seeing if they have what it takes to survive in "the new age".

Mukai's primary power is his control over many things related to stone. He can form stone, either in crude rocks to chuck at foes, or elaborate pillars to crush them with. He can also petrify his opponents into solid stone with his touch, rendering them helpless against his coming attacks. His ultimate technique, the Netherworld Agony (also known as the Shikai), is a light of energy that emanates from below him, battering and petrifying any who do not guard against it. In battle, Mukai is a formidable foe, like all SNK bosses. He is adept at close or long range attacks. Up close, Mukai's strikes, while relatively slow, are powerful. His basic hard kick also possesses high priority and a degree of autoguard, cancelling out most physical strikes during the initial leap, and leaving the victim open to the kick itself. From a distance, he can hurl rocks at foes in a basic projectile attack, ambush enemies with rising pillars (which are manually aimed by the player or CPU), or he can simply cause a pillar to fall directly on a foe, regardless of where they stand. His Netherworld Agony fills the screen, and can be instantly followed up with another attack, adding even more damage to the formidable attack. This can be especially dangerous if Mukai has 3 or more levels of power, because he can follow this with his Desperation Move (which batters foes with a barrage of pillars), doing exorbitant amounts of damage.

Shion (紫苑 Shion?) is a character from the King of Fighters series. He makes his first appearance in King of Fighters XI as a sub-boss. He was conceptually designed to be one of Ron's daughters[19] though developers decided to change his gender to startle and appeal to fans with his androgynous appearance.[20] His gender was revealed to fans in his official back story, which states (and corrects itself) on his masculinity.[21]

Shion is an enigmatic character about which little is known. He works as an underling of Magaki and seems knowledgeable about the workings of Orochi. His true motives and his reason for following Magaki are unknown.

After being defeated at the ruins of the tournament finals, he is dragged through an extradimensional gate and seemingly killed. However, after Magaki is defeated at the end of the tournament, it is Shion's spear hurled through a gate Magaki created that finally kills him, suggesting he is still alive.
