Relatives Lady Kale (aunt)

Princess Gwenevere, also known as Starla in the European and US DVD versions, is the star of the show, and the newest Jewel Rider. Gwenevere, the daughter of Queen Anya and King Jared, lives in the Crystal Palace in New Camelot. She receives the Sun Stone at the Friendship Ring Ceremony in the first episode and is bonded with Sunstar, a winged unicorn who becomes her special friend after Gwen teaches her to fly, and shares her Sun Stone.

She is based on the character of Queen Guinevere, King Arthur's wife in the Arthurian legend. Gwen is to be queen of Avalon when she comes of age. She has tan skin, yellow/gold hair, blue eyes, and likes to wear pink.

Though she is the most inexperienced of the Jewel Riders, Princess Gwenevere becomes their leader after the first episode, and the other riders must follow her commands. She is good-natured, but also somewhat spoiled and prissy. She loves to dress up in fancy dresses and attend royal parties.

[edit] Tamara

Tamara
First appearance Jewel Quest, Part 1
Last appearance The One Jewel
Created by Robert Mandell
Portrayed by Jean Louisa Kelly
Information
Species Human
Gender Female
Age Teenager
Occupation Jewel Rider/Musician
Title Lady
Family Doc and Charity (parents)

Tamara is a bit older and more experienced than Gwenevere. She owns the Heart Stone, a red, heart-shaped jewel that contains the power of healing and understanding animals. She is a well-known musician in the enchanted land of Avalon, as well as a caretaker for baby magical animals. She has pale skin, pink hair, green eyes, and likes to wear green.

Tamara was likely a Jewel Rider for the longest of the three because she is the one Princess Gwenevere and Fallon often go to for advice. Her Heart Stone's main ability is healing. It is very useful to her if one of her many baby animal friends gets hurt. It also has musical powers and can transform into or enhance the potential of any instrument. Music is Tamara's other talent. She is famous throughout the kingdom for her talent to excel at any instrument and is the only of the three Jewel Riders who sings in the series. The songs Tamara sings are "Feel the Magic" (from Song of the Rainbow), "Heartland Farm" (Home Sweet Heart Stone) and "Nothing Like a Friend" (Shadowsong).

Though she does not receive her special "zebracorn" friend, Shadowsong, until the second season, Tamara is constantly surrounded by baby animals because her parents, Doc and Charity, run Heartland Farm, a sort of nursery for future magical animals. Tamara is very motherly and always supports whoever she is with, acting as the voice of reason. She is an expert musician and can play any instrument as well as create instruments with her Heart Stone; she loves to sing songs about love and friendship.

Tamara is a resident of Heartland Farm in Avalon. The farm is used to raise baby magical animals so that they can eventually grow up and become a special friend to a Jewel Rider. After becoming a Jewel Rider, Tamara's parents, Doc and Charity, took on most of the responsibilities of raising the animals at Heartland Farm, but some of them were so attached to Tamara that they followed her on her journey anyway. These include Spike, a baby blue panther, Cleo, a baby pink unicorn, and Sugar, a baby green dragon. Tamara is unique in that she is the only Jewel Rider without a fully grown unicorn as her special friend, until the second season where she met Shadowsong, an outcast pink zebracorn. When she needed to ride a unicorn in the first season, she usually sat on the back of Moondance with Fallon.

Tamara is extremely sweet and nurturing and is always willing to lend a helping hand. She rarely gets angry and always remains calm to think out a situation, no matter how dire an emergency it is. She has a knack for calming down even the roughest of crowds and always manages to be polite, sincere, and modest, no matter how rude someone else is being toward her. In the episode For Whom the Bell Trolls, for instance, the troll Murray kidnapped the pack, but Tamara uses friendship and kindness to convince him to release her friends, instead of leading an attack.

She more or less treats Cleo, Sugar, and Spike as a mother. In the episode Song of the Rainbow, when she fell under the influence of an enchanted harp, her primary worry was finding someone to care for the babies in her absence. She always tries to befriend everyone she meets and if she fails to, she considers it a challenge that she will always take on. It was in this way that Shadowsong, the zebracorn, became her special friend in the second season in the episode Shadowsong. The zebracorn would not respond to her Heart Stone no matter what she did, so she tried singing to him and naming him and doing everything she could to make him feel comfortable until he opened up to her and became bonded to her through her jewel.

Tamara was likely created to contrast Fallon's aggressive nature, but though Tamara is physically weaker and somewhat more feminine, Princess Gwenevere is more of a contrast to Fallon due to her obsession with fashion and beauty. Gwenevere and Fallon often get into arguments due to their differences and it is Tamara who must settle these arguments due to her constant drive for peace. Everyone in the series knows that she is always fair and will never take sides.

Tamara's Heart Stone allows her to talk to any animal in Avalon, unlike the other Jewel Riders, who are only able to communicate with their one special friend. This ability, as well as her experience on Heartland Farm, gives her a special bond with every animal and causes most animals to be drawn to her. Tamara was the only one who was able to get through to the very hyperactive prism fox, Kit (in the episode Home Sweet Heart Stone). The bond she formed with her allowed her to call her for help later in the series and eventually summon the gliders who gave the Jewel Riders wings to glide through the wild magic (in the episode Full Circle). In the second season, Tamara is rescued from a giant spider monster by Shadowsong, the pink zebracorn. At first, he is covered in brown mud because he is ashamed of his pink stripes, but Tamara sings to him and gives him all of her attention until he is no longer afraid to reveal himself to her. After he saves the Jewel Riders from having their magic absorbed by Morgana, Tamara thought he had used all his powers and was about to die. Her tears split her Heart Stone in half and bonded her with Shadowsong, saving his life.

[edit] Fallon

Information
Species Human
Gender Female
Age Teenager
Occupation Jewel Rider

Fallon is the athletic tomboy of the group. She owns the Moon Stone, a blue moon-shaped jewel that creates illusions and other tricks. She finds herself a bit left out when it comes to Gwenevere and Tamara's more girly activities because Fallon prefers to hang out with the guys and go racing on her unicorn friend, Moondance.

Fallon can be very aggressive and active, balancing the more feminine and aesthetically-minded Gwenevere. She owns the Moon Stone, a blue moon-shaped jewel that creates illusions and other tricks, and is very skilled in athletics and can perform many incredible feats. She has dark skin, purple hair, violet eyes, and likes to wear purple and green.

She finds herself a bit left out when it comes to Gwenevere and Tamara's more girly activities because Fallon prefers to hang out with the guys and go racing on her unicorn friend, Moondance, just as brave and athletic as her. Moondance is a unicorn princess and is very closely bonded with Fallon. Together, they can overcome any obstacle, and they always tell each other everything and support each other.

She is the toughest and most graceful of the Jewel Riders, and most likely to take on the powerful Lady Kale for a fight. She can also think of brilliant ways of fighting her. Fallon has a kind heart and fights to protect her friends.

Fallon doesn't get along with her parents, Minerva and Alfred, because they did not attend the Friendship Ring ceremony where she received her Moon Stone. She eventually learns to get over it, though, and restores her relationship with them.

[edit] The Pack

The Pack
First appearance Jewel Quest

Information
Species Human
Gender Males
Age Teenagers
Occupation The Pack Riders

The Pack, or Knights of Avalon as they are also referred to, consist of Drake (who is the commander), Josh and Max. Each member has a Forest Stone and rides a wolf. They help Gwen, Tamara and Falon in their fight against the forces of evil. However, since Jewel Riders is primarily a girls' show, The Pack usually stays conveniently in the background so there's more time to focus on the girls.

[edit] The Pack

Drake is the leader of the pack, and has the biggest part in the show of the three. His wolf is named Thunder. He is somewhat arrogant, but his heart is always in the right place. He has a huge crush on Princess Gwenevere, but hates when she tries to play games with his mind by flirting and teasing him. He has tan skin, brown hair, and brown eyes.

In the first season, the episode Love Struck involves Drake finding the Magic Sword of Garmondale in a tree, and using its power to set up dates with all three of the Jewel Riders - at the same time! Drake has a friendly ongoing competition with Fallon in the field games put on by King Jared. During the final episode, when Gwen sees into her future, her king is seen from behind, and it is believed (because of the long brown hair) that this means Drake and Princess Gwenevere are destined to be together, although it never specifically says.

[edit] Josh

Josh is a very "cool" member of the pack. He's very outgoing and isn't afraid to speak his mind. His wolf's name is Stormrunner. He has dark skin, black hair, and brown eyes.

[edit] Max

Max is the quietest member of the pack, but he also seems very sweet. His wolf's name is Shadow (but is named Windwalker according to the trading cards). He has pale skin, blonde hair, and brown eyes.

[edit] Lady Kale

Kale
First appearance Jewel Quest, Part 1
Last appearance Spirit of Avalon
Cause/reason Throne of Avalon
Created by Robert Mandell
Portrayed by Corinne Orr
Information
Aliases Madame Lapin
Species Human
Gender Female
Age Mid-30s (presumably)
Title Lady, Princess
Relatives Queen Anya (sister)
Gwenevere (niece)

Princess Kale, the villain of the show, is the sister of Queen Anya and the Princess Gwenevere's aunt. Angry that her sister received the Sun Stone and became queen instead of her, she now tries to destroy Merlin and take over the throne of Avalon.

Kale is an evil sorceress who uses her magic in her quest for the absolute power. She refers to herself as to Princess Kale (and self-proclaimed Queen Kale for two episodes, the title she believes is rightfully hers). Being an elder princess of Avalon, Kale firmly believed that she, not her sister Anya, should become the next ruler of the land. However, Merlin did not grant her the Sun Stone which would have given her the power to become the Queen, as he judged her unworthy - instead, he gave that precious jewel to Anya. After angry Kale attempted to forcibly overthrow her sister, she was banished from the Crystal Palace of New Camelot and declared an outlaw. Kale then dedicated her life to seeking revenge upon her former teacher and take his place as well.

Kale is a tall woman with tan skin, long black hair and violet eyes. She likes to wear dark colors - especially red, and wears purple earrings and eye shadow. Her original costume was a Jewel Rider-style red jumpsuit-type costume with a big gloves and a relatively short cape. After gaining the Dark Stone in the first episode, she magically transformed it into an also red jewel armor consisting of a long cape, a high boots and a dragon-shaped crown-like headgear. Other outfits included a spider-themed dress, the queen's robes, and a burka-like dress. In one episode she was magically disguised as an older woman.

Some time after (at the beginning of the series) Kale had discovered and tuned to herself the legendary Enchanted Jewel called the Dark Stone. She has two dweasel (dino-weasels) servants, Rufis and Twigg, which uncanny ability to smell Wild Magic she uses to find Enchanted Jewels for her - the more jewels Kale takes control of, the stronger her powers become. She rides around in a wooden wagon carried through the air by Grimm, her huge red winged dragon. Grimm transports Kale to and from her forbidding castle in the dark Thornwoods, a former area of Ravenwoods changed by her spell.

In the first season, after banishing Merlin to Wild Magic, Kale spent most of her time searching for the Crown Jewels in order to gain magical powers, battling Jewel Riders along the way. Kale was seeking to capture a key to the Merlin's jewel box and find a way to destroy him once and for all. During one attempt, she allies herself to a group of outlaws to attack the Riders' caravan. In the episode Dreamfields, both she and Gwen get confused and temporaly swap their roles; afterwards, Kale also seems to have second thoughts on her villainy.

Eventually, after all seven Crown Jewels were found, Lady Kale sneaked into the Crystal Palace disguised as Anya and hijacked the powers of the Jewel Keep. After she defeated all her enemies, seemingly all-powerful Kale sat on the Anya's throne. However, the reign of Queen Kale quickly ended, as she was soon tricked by Merlin and trapped and seemingly destroyed by Wild Magic.

While it was believed for a while that Lady Kale was lost forever, in reality she was merely sucked into the Wild Magic and drifted there until she was rescued and freed by another captive of the realm, the evil wizard Morgana Le Fay of Arthurian folklore, of whom Kale becomes an uneasy ally. Because Morgana only make illusions of herself in Avalon, she sends Kale to find the lost jewels of all the ancient wizards. Kale becomes somewhat of a sidekick to Morgana, appearing only in 8 out of 12 episodes and with her own powers inferior to these newly-acquired by the Jewel Riders.

Kale meets her end in the episode Lady of the Lake, transformed by her niece into a stone statue together with her dragon. In this form she also appears briefly at the beginning of the final episode.

Kale was also known as Kaluixa in the Catalonian language version.[1] Nickname of one of the Jewel Riders' writers was Lady Kay.

Her villainess status, evil sorcery, costume, and imprisonment of someone dear to the series's lead character are several things she has in common with the Queen of the Crown from Galaxy Rangers, another show by Robert Mandell. They even share the same voice actress (Corinne Orr).

[edit] Morgana

Morgana
First appearance Revenge of the Darkstone
Last appearance The One Jewel
Created by Robert Mandell
Information
Species Elf
Gender Female
Age 1000+
Occupation Sorceress (Wizard)

The second season's main villainess, Morgana is a legendary dark elf evil sorceress. She is Merlin's ultimate nemesis and the original creator of Lady Kale's Darkstone jewel, even if no longer in capable of using it herself. Like the other wizards, she doesn't need jewels to use magic.

Morgana is the leader of an ancient Grand Wizards who were defeated by good wizard Merlin more than 1,000 years ago, as she led the wizards in a coup to overthrow Merlin and usurp the magic of Avalon for themselves. Merlin proved too powerful, however, and they were all banished into the Wild Magic - once here, she was unable to return to Avalon without her Dark Stone, drifting as part of the magic itself.

After the first season, Lady Kale's body reforms in Morgana's palace trapped in the Wild Magic, and both witches enter a partnership with her against the Jewel Riders. Even when she finally does discover her Dark Stone, it has already re-tuned itself to Kale, leaving Morgana to search for other soures of magic to return to Avalon.

Because Morgana can only make illusions of herself in Avalon (she is able to appear via insubstantial projections in order to communicate with Kale, but is still able to use her powers to fight the Jewel Riders), she sends Kale to find the lost jewels of all the ancient wizards. Later in the season, Morgana starts appearing in flesh.

With all seven Wizard Jewels Morgana can free the other wizards and return to Avalon. She is finally defeated and destroyed by Merlin and Princess Gwenevere in the last episode of the 2nd series.

1000 years ago, he banished the rest of the wizards into the Wild Magic for attempting to take over Avalon and use its great power for their evil ends. He was training the all the Jewel Riders and does good to all Avalon, before Kale used her Dark Stone to send him into the wild magic and now the jewel riders must find him.

The jewel on his staff was also the key to the Jewel Box that held the seven Crown Jewels. After Kale breaks it in the end of the first season, Merlin is unable to return to Avalon until he is given the One-Jewel Staff by Gwenevere.
