List of Israeli assassinations

The following is a list of assassinations known or believed to have been conducted by Israel. Most fall within two campaigns: Operation Wrath of God, which was launched as a response to the 1972 Munich massacre, and the policy of targeted killings, "focused foiling" (in Hebrew: סיכול ממוקד sikul memukad), in the wake of the al-Aqsa Intifada.

- October 16, 1972 - Abdel Wael Zwaiter, Libyan embassy employee and PLO representative is shot by two gunmen in his Rome apartment.[1]
- December 8, 1972 - Dr. Mahmoud Hamshari, PLO representative in France was killed by a bomb concealed in his telephone in Paris.[1]
- January 24, 1973 - Hussein Al Bashir, Fatah representative in Cyprus, is killed by a bomb planted in his hotel room bed in Nicosia.[1]
- April 6, 1973 - Dr. Basil Al-Kubaissi, a law professor at the American University of Beirut, is killed by two gunmen in Paris.[1]
- April 9, 1973 - Sayeret Matkal commandos assassinate the following persons during Operation Spring of Youth
- Muhammad Youssef Al-Najjar, Black September Operations officer and PLO official
- Kamal Adwan, Fatah veteran
- Kamal Nasser, PLO spokesman
- April 11, 1973 - Zaiad Muchasi, Fatah representative to Cyprus, is killed in a hotel room in Athens.[1]
- June 28, 1973 - Mohammad Boudia, Black September operations officer, is killed by a pressure activated mine under his car seat in Paris.[1]
- July 21, 1973 - Ahmed Bouchiki, an innocent waiter believed to be Ali Hassan Salameh, is killed by gunmen in Lillehammer, Norway. The incident has since become known as the Lillehammer affair.
- January 22, 1979 - Ali Hassan Salameh, high-ranked leader in the PLO and Black September, is killed by a car bomb in Beirut.[1]

- April 16, 1988 - Abu Jihad, second in command to Yassir Arafat, is killed by Israeli commandos in Tunis. See Tunis Raid.[1]

- February 16, 1992 - Abbas al-Musawi, the Secretary-General of Hezbollah, is killed in his car convoy in Lebanon by missiles launched from two Israeli helicopters.[1]
- October 26, 1995 - Fathi Shaqaqi, the head of Palestinian Islamic Jihad, is shot and killed in front of the Diplomat Hotel in Sliema, Malta.[1]
- January 6, 1996 - Yahya Ayyash "The Engineer", a bombmaker for Hamas, is killed in the Gaza strip by a bomb planted cell phone by the SHABAK.[1]

- November 22, 2000 - Jamal Abdel Raziq, senior official of the Fatah faction Tanzim, is killed with three other group members when their two cars are fired upon by IDF troops in Gaza.[2]
- February 3, 2001 - Massoud Ayyad, a lieutenant-colonel in Yaser Arafat's Force 17, is killed while driving in the Jabaliya refugee camp in Gaza by three helicopter launched rockets.[3]
- July 31, 2001 - Jamal Mansour, a high ranking official of Hamas' West Bank political wing, is killed when his office is struck by helicopter launched missiles.[4]
- August 20, 2001 - Imad Abu Sneneh, the leader of Tanzim, is shot and killed in Hebron by an Israeli team.[5]
- January 14, 2002 - Raed al-Karmi, head of al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades assassinated in Tulkarem.
- July 22, 2002 - Salah Shahade, the leader of Hamas Izz ad-Din al-Qassam is killed using 2,205 pound of explosive dropped by a F-16. The attack also killed his wife and 9 children.
- March 8, 2003 - Ibrahim al-Makadmeh and three of his aides were killed by helicopter-fired missiles Gaza City
- March 22, 2004 - Ahmed Yassin, co-founder and leader of Hamas, and bodyguards are killed in the Gaza Strip when hit by Israeli Air Force AH-64 Apache fired Hellfire missiles.
- April 17, 2004 - Abdel Aziz al-Rantissi, co-founder and leader of Hamas and successor of Ahmed Yassin as leader of Hamas after his death, is killed by helicopter-fired missiles along with his son.
- September 26, 2004 - Izz El-Deen Sheikh Khalil killed by automobile booby trap in Damascus, Syria
- October 21, 2004 - Adnan al-Ghoul, Hamas weapons expert, and Imad Abbas were killed when an Apache helicopter fired missiles at their car.
- June 8, 2006 - Abu Samhadana was killed by an Israeli airstrike along with at least three other PRC members.[6][7]
- February 12, 2008 - Imad Mughniyah, one of Hezbollah's top commanders, was assassinated by a car bomb in Damascus, Syria. Some news reports indicated the Mossad was responsible,[8] though Israel denied carrying it out.[9]
