[edit] Main Characters
[edit] Zim
Zim is a short, green, almost stereotypical looking alien from the planet Irk. He is trying to conquer the Earth, and is generally unsuccessful. He uses ridiculously excessive and elaborate plans to conquer the planet when he obviously has the resources to do so much more efficiently.
After the series's cancellation, Jhonen Vasquez did a four-page comic for the Nickelodeon Magazine. In it, Zim conquers the Earth in less than half a minute when Dib isn't looking. Dib and Zim then go to outer space to ride space bunnies. This blunt and exaggerated plot may have been done out of spite for the cancellation.
Zim isn't technically an Invader,[1] and his superiors actively despise him. In a flashback sequence during the episode "The Frycook What Came from All That Space", it is confirmed that Zim was officially demoted from the rank of Invader to Food Services after his disastrous performance during Operation Impending Doom One. His current assignment to invade Earth is actually just the Tallest's latest and most desperate attempt to get Zim as far away from them as possible.[2]
Zim is voiced by Richard Steven Horvitz, but was voiced by Billy West in the pilot episode.
[edit] GIR
GIR is a dysfunctional version of the Irken SIR (Standard Information Retrieval) units given to Irken invaders. In order to avoid wasting a functional SIR unit on Zim, GIR's mind was constructed from junk parts found in the Almighty Tallest's garbage can. He is almost always completely insane. Zim blames him for most of the problems on the mission, regardless of whether or not it is his fault.
GIR takes a highly carefree approach to life, mostly concerned with his squeaky toys, food, the Scary Monkey Show, pigs, and television. He, unlike Zim, has adjusted to Earth life and food/snacks, and enjoys waffles, cupcakes, burgers, tacos, burritos, taquitos, sandwiches, and slushies--especially chocolate bubblegum flavor. He doesn't know what the 'G' in 'GIR' stands for, but most think it stands for garbage. GIR also adores mongooses, video piggys, and dancing in circles like a monkey. GIR is very obedient, even jumping off a ship when Dib told him to get off, or being told to get away from an ordering counter when Zim said no. Otherwise, in desperate situations, he generally does something other than what he is told to. G in Gir could stand for general. I could be information and lastly, R is for robot.
GIR is voiced by Rosearik Rikki Simons.
[edit] Dib
Dib is one of Zim's classmates at school. Dib is the only human that attempts to stop Zim's mission to conquer the earth. He has been obsessed with the paranormal and supernatural since an early age. An avid paranormalist, Dib is often criticised by his classmates for being "crazy" or mentally unstable due to his outlandish theories. He apparently is the only human to recognize or care that Zim is an alien, other than Gaz, who thinks Zim is too dumb to take over the earth. Dib has devoted himself to stopping Zim's plans of conquest.
Almost every being he comes into contact with remarks that Dib has an abnormally large head, even though his head looks no more disproportionate than any one else's.
Dib is voiced by Andy Berman.
[edit] Gaz
Gaz is Dib's younger sister, who is often described as "Dib's scary sister." She has a penchant for video games and a fixation with pizza. She is hardly ever seen without her Gameslave (2) videogame. She loves Bloaty's Pizza Hog and drawing piggies. She knows and admits that Zim is an alien, but doesn't care because she is aware of his overwhelming ineptitude and incompetence when it comes to World Domination.[3]
Gaz is voiced by Melissa Fahn.
[edit] Secondary Characters
[edit] The Almighty Tallest
The Irken Empire has a hierarchal class structure, where shorter individuals are both figuratively and literally looked down upon. The tallest Irken alive takes command of the Empire as "the Tallest", but since Red and Purple, the two current Tallest, are the exact same height, they share equal (and high-supreme) power. They also like snacks.
Both share a literal disdain for Zim, as do the rest of the Irken race, and gave him his "secret mission" as a means of getting rid of him. This proved unsuccessful as Zim still contacts them to update them on his mission's "progress", which is usually met with annoyance, humor, or a patronizing attitude. The only time the two have ever shown an interest in Zim is when he told them how tall the human race was, and how stupid they are, in the episode Abducted. Neither could believe that anything tall could be stupid.
Some fans think the two might be brothers, but it is later revealed that Irkins do not have parents or siblings.
The voice of Almighty Tallest Purple was done by Kevin McDonald, best known for his participation in the Canadian sketch comedy group The Kids in the Hall, Pleakly from Disney's Lilo and Stitch, Waffle from Catscratch, and as Pastor Dave in That 70's show. Almighty Tallest Red was voiced by Wally Wingert, who is known for voicing Renji Abarai in Bleach and Brago from Zatch Belland Jon Arbuckle in "Garfield Gets Real".
[edit] Professor Membrane
Professor Membrane is father of Dib and Gaz. He is also the world's smartest man, host of the popular television show "Probing the Membrane of Science" and inventor of SuperToast. Membrane's scientific abilities are offset by incredibly poor parenting: his primary method of managing his children is by way of a floating digital projection screen - and his messages to them are often not only prerecorded but out of date.[4] Also, he rarely calls Dib and Gaz by their names, instead calling them 'son' and 'daughter'. Contrary to popular belief, "Membrane" is his given name, not his last name; many fans incorrectly assume that Dib and Gaz's last name is "Membrane," when in fact the family's surname is unknown. Professor Membrane is voiced by Rodger Bumpass, who is also known for Squidward Tentacles.
[edit] Ms. Bitters
Ms. Bitters is the teacher for Dib and Zim's class. Devoid of any compassionate emotion and having a very demonic hatred for children and life in general, she is a tall, slender, aged woman of unknown origin. She has a habit of telling stories that begin with "I was a ____ once", that show her doing whatever it was that she is talking about, and also showing how it went "Horribly wrong!". Such examples of this are her being an astronaut and a Fairy Princess, ending with her ship imploding, and her flying into a bug zapper, respectively. Another noticeable habit is her snake-like qualities, as it seems she can "slither" around 3-dimensional space similarly, and sticks out a forked tongue while hissing. She also has the ability to emerge out of other people's shadows as seen in "the rise of zitboy." The character is directly pulled from Vasquez's earlier comic book series Squee! where she was Todd's teacher. She also holds to the theory that the universe will eventually implode in on itself, and makes mention of this on various occasions. Ms. Bitters is voiced by Lucille Bliss.
[edit] Supporting Characters
During the episodes of Invader ZIM, many characters reappeared and some got larger parts in episodes. Some characters were introduced by storylines such as Iggins in "Game Slave 2" and Keef from "Bestest Friends".
[edit] Skoodge
Skoodge is a short, chubby alien who first appeared in "The Nightmare Begins", where he was assigned to Blorch, Home Of The Slaughtering Rat People. He later appeared in "Battle of the Planets", where he successfully conquered Blorch, and thus, as tradition gets to fire the canon where the cannonball will officially "Destroy" the planet. However, The Almighty Tallest felt that someone so short ("And ugly") should not fire the canon. So they came up with a "new" tradition that Skoodge gets to be the one who is launched into the planet. Although some fans thought he was deceased, he was seen alive again in "Hobo 13", where Zim comments "Invader Skoodge? I thought The Almighty Tallest killed you." To which Skoodge replies "Yeah, but I'm okay now." Indicating that he might be a clone, but this information is never determined. There was also an unfinished episode that was supposed have Skoodge as the main prominent.
[edit] Melven
A round headed nerd who first appeared in "Bestest Friends". He also wants to be an astronaut. His voice was diffrent when he first appeared then it was in later episodes. He is the one responsible for giving the whole school lice in the episode "Lice".
[edit] Suzie
A dorky girl at "skool" who first appeared in "Bestset Friends". She is known for her huge braces and purple hair. She is seen in Ms. Bitters class and seems to be in love with Dib. She is friends with Melvin and Keef.
[edit] Bill
A paranormal investagator who refuses to believe Zim is an alien but believes in Count Cocofang, Chicken foot and other crazy things. He first appears in "Career Day" and has a minor appearance in "The Sad, Sad Tale of Chickenfoot".
[edit] Keef
Keef first appeared in "Bestest Friends" where he was Zim's "Friend". However, Keef would not leave Zim alone and was constantly stalking him. He then tried to throw Zim a suprise party. Gir couldent reisest so Gir said " Keff is throwing a suprize party for you!" That is when Zim decided to give Keef a "gift". When keef opened his "gift" a pair of medium size robot arms came out of the box and tore his eyeballs out from their sockets and replaced them with a pair of cyborg eyes, so that the next living thing he saw (which was a squirrel) he saw as Zim. He appears in later episodes in the background, and has his old eyes back again. How he got his old ones back again is unknown. An unfinished episode entitled "Keef Returns" had Keef as the main prominent again where he tries to be Zim's friend once more but ends up becoming best friends with Dib. Dib and Zim then team up to get rid of him.
[edit] Mr. Elliot
Mr. Elliot is Gaz's teacher who is nearly always happy and joyful. He cares a lot about his students and also likes sweaters. His good intentions gets on Gaz's nerves.
[edit] Wille
Willie is a disgusting, filthy and weird child who is probably completely insane.
[edit] Chris Farley
In "Battle Dib" , Dib tried to cheat off of Chris's paper. He was also seen in "Walk of Doom" and "Parent Teacher Night". He was last seen eating at Mc Meaties with Roman Dirge in "Career Day".
[edit] Iggins
Iggins only appeared in "Game Slave 2" where he was in line with Gaz to get the new video game. When there was only one copy left of Game Slave 2 ordered by someone named Clarence Wong, the store clerk told Gaz that if Clarence didn't show up soon it was hers. However Iggins told the store clerk that he was Clarence Wong and got the last copy. Gaz spent the whole night hunting down and terrifing him until he gave up and gave her the video game, to which she comments "The rightful order has been restored". He also appears in "Walk for Your Lives" when a cop arrests him for standing and doing nothing.
