This is a list of terms from the manga and anime series InuYasha (犬夜叉, InuYasha?) written by Rumiko Takahashi.
- Adamant barrage: see Kongōsōha.
- Ane-ue: means sister. (Kohaku sometimes says this when he talks about Sango)
- Baba (婆, ばば?): old women.[1]
- Backlash wave: see Bakuryūha.
- Baka (馬鹿, ばか?): idiot.[2]
- Bakuryūha: (Backlash wave) An attack of Tetsusaiga's which uses the opponent's strong yōki and the Kaze no Kizu to return the attack, magnified hundreds of times.
- Band of Seven: see Shichinintai.
- Barrier shatter: see Red Tetsusaiga.
- Beads of Subjugations: see Kotodama no Nenju.
- Blades of Blood: see Hijin Kessō.
- Bone Eater's Well: The well that Kagome and InuYasha use to travel between modern Tokyo and the feudal era.
- Bunshin: in reference to Shippo's dividing technique.
- Chichi-ue: a very polite way of saying father. (Sesshomaru usually says this when he mentions his father.)
- Daiyōkai : (literally "great yōkai") an especially strong and powerful yōkai.
- detachment: refers to the servants Naraku creates from his own body.
- Feudal era : see Sengoku Jidai.
- Fox Fire: see Kitsune-bi.
- God Tree: see Goshinboku.
- Goshinboku: the Sacred "God" Tree InuYasha was sealed to (also known as the tree of ages).
- Hama no Ya: Sacred (or purifying) arrows (specifically Kagome's and Kikyo's).
- Hanyō: (commonly translated as "half-demon") the offspring of a yōkai and a human. They are often outcasts of both human and yōkai society.
- Heart Scar: see Kokoro no Kizu.
- Hidden Cloud: see Kumogakure.
- Hijin Kessō: (Blades of Blood) InuYasha's attack where he literally throws blades of blood similar to a shuriken.
- Hinezumi: fire rat.
- Hinezumi Robe: made from the hair of the fire rat, InuYasha's outfit.
- Hiraikotsu: a giant boomerang made from the bones of demons (Sango's weapon of choice).
- Hōshi: a low-ranking, itinerant Buddhist monk.
- Inu no Taishou: is the title of Dog General for InuYasha's and Sesshomaru's father.
- Inugami: (sometimes known as Inuyōkai) dog-like yōkai; literally "dog god."
- Iron Reaver Soul Stealer: see Sankon Tessō.
- Itadakimasu: a traditional expression of gratitude before meals.
- Japa mala: means prayer beads (like Miroku's).
- Jewel of Four Souls: see Shikon no Tama.
- Jewel Shard: a fragment of the Shikon no Tama.
- Jii-chan: means grandpa.
- Jourou: noble-women (usually translated as mistress)—in reference to Mistress Centipede.
- Jyaki: an evil or demonic aura.
- Kazāna: Miroku's "wind tunnel" attack.
- Kaze no Kizu: (Wind Scar) a special attack technique of Tetsusaiga's that can kill 100 demons with one strike.
- Kekkai: a magical barrier against evil spirits and ghosts (Miroku's).
- Kitsune: a fox yōkai from Japanese folklore known by their magic tricks, such as Shippo.
- Kitsune Youjutsu: translates to fox magic.
- Kitsune-bi: Shippo's Fox Fire attack.
- Kokoro no Kizu: Shippo's version of the Kaze no Kizu.
- Kongōsōha: (Adamant barrage) the blade of the Tetsusaiga is covered by fragmented crystals. When the sword is whipped into an attack, many shards of spear-like crystals shoot out.
- Kotodama no Nenju: (sometimes known as a rosary) the Beads of Subjugation around InuYasha's neck.
- Kumogakure: a technique Shippo uses to become invisible.
- Kusari-gama: Japanese chain and sickle weapon (like Kohaku's).
- Miasma: see Shōki.
- Miko: (commonly translated as "priestess") young female attendants at Shinto shrines.
- Mononoke: evil/vengeful spirit.
- Meidou Zangetsuha: a technique Sesshomarou's Tenseiga originally uses, but is added to Tetsusaiga in chapter 504; translates to something like "path to the underworld/darkworld", basically hell. It works by opening a large circle (after mastered by Sesshomarou)which sucks everything near it and transports it directly to hell.
- Naki Kinoko: Shippo's Weeping Mushrooms attack.
- nee-chan: means big sis.
- Nekomata: a cat older than ten years is said to receive magical powers and two tails.
- O-fuda: (translated as "sacred sutras" or "spell scrolls") papers which hold special powers and are used against yōkai.
- Obake: ghosts, goblins, and monsters from Japanese folklore, including spirits of the human dead.
- Ōkami: Japanese Gray Wolf.
- Oni: the classic Japanese demon, an ogre-like creature which often has horns.
- onee-sama: a respectful term for an elder sister.
- Osuwari: (literally "sit") a command for dogs, this is what Kagome says to subdue InuYasha.
- otouto: means younger brother.
- Prayer beads: see Japa mala.
- Priestess: see Miko.
- Purifying arrow: see Hama no Ya.
- Red Tetsusaiga: Tetsusaiga turns crimson red in order to break any spiritual barriers.
- Robe of the Fire Rat: see Hinezumi Robe.
- Rosary (InuYasha's): see Kotodama no Nenju.
- Sacred arrows: see Hama no Ya.
- Sacred Sutras: see ofuda.
- Sacred God Tree: see Goshinboku.
- Sakasa-gami: inverted-hair - in reference to Yura of the Hair.
- Saimyōshō: (Hell Wasps) - Naraku's poisonous insects.
- Sankon Tessō: (Iron Reaver Soul Stealer) InuYasha's basic attack.
- Sengoku Jidai: (15th to 16th centuries) Sengoku period or feudal era of Japan, also known as the Warring States era.
- Shakujo: Buddhist staff (like Miroku's).
- Shibugarasu: corpse dancing crow.
- Shichinintai: (Band of Seven) - the seven executed mercenaries who were resurrected by Naraku to do his bidding.
- Shikigami: (specifically Kikyo's) a kind of spirit created to aid their master.
- Shinidamachū: Kikyo's snake like soul collectors.
- Shikon no Tama: (or The Jewel of Four Souls) the shards of this jewel are what everyone is searching for.
- Shinto: a native religion of Japan.
- Shōki/Shouki: demonic miasma, a highly poisonous gas.
- Taijiya: a yōkai (demon) exterminator.
- Tanuki: a raccoon-dog from Japanese folklore.
- Tenseiga: one of Sesshomaru's swords—a sword of healing with power over the nether world.
- Tetsusaiga: InuYasha's sword.
- Tetsusaiga no Saya: the sheath of Tetsusaiga.
- Tessaiga: The normal romanization of Tetsusaiga which differs from Viz's romanization. See Tetsusaiga for details.
- Thunder Brothers: Hiten and Manten, who killed Shippo's father, are brothers and members of the Thunder clan of demons. They can fly; are violently misogynistic; and seek the shards of the sacred jewel.
- Tōkijin: one of Sesshomaru's swords.
- Tree of ages: see Goshinboku.
- Tsubushi Goma: Shippo's Smashing Top attack.
- wakizashi: the shorter and often companion sword of the Katana.
- WcDonald's: a burger place in modern Tokyo in the series.
- Wind Scar: see Kaze no Kizu.
- Wind tunnel: see Kazāna.
- Yōkai: (demon) belongs to a class of obake. They generally have some sort of spiritual or supernatural power. Some possess part animal and part human features.
