Steven's father arrives for a visit, causing the two to clash as always. When his father reveals an important piece of news, Steven begins to question their whole relationship. |

When a close family friend and business associate of Steven touches 15 year old Mallory inappropriately, she goes to Alex for advice. He convinces her she misunderstood. "Uncle Arthur" comes over to the house and Mallory ends up alone with him. He apologizes about touching her, but then kisses her on the mouth. This time Alex believes her, but makes Elyse talk to her. When Mallory weeps, Elyse admits something similar happened to her. Elyse confronts Arthur accidentally on live tv. Arthur apologizes to Elyse and Steven and claims it is the fault of his divorce. When he finds himself alone with Mallory again, he apologizes and says he'll get help. |

As the new editor of the school paper, Alex learns of an Algebra test cheating scandal that Mallory is involved in. He confronts Mallory, but when encouraged by his parents to "print truth," he writes an article. The teacher in charge praises his reporting, but tells him not to print it. Alex prints it anyway, his classmates think he's a "fink," and he loses the position of editor. Mallory blames cheating on trying to be as good as Alex in classes. Stephen and Elyse tell Alex he should have printed the story without names. He apologizes to Mallory for hurting her. |

Steven and Elyse are arrested on Thanksgiving when protesting nuclear arms. Alex is pro-nuclear weapons, though Jennifer's questions shake his reasoning. Mallory just wishes someone else could do the protesting and leave their family peace. Steven and Elyse are given a chance to leave prison if they sign a document promising never to protest and swearing they support the arms race. They refuse it. |

Elyse's brother Ned, played by Tom Hanks surprises the Keatons, asking to stay for a vacation. After seeing Ned act suspiciously, they discover he is on the run. He tells them he has ruined a major deal with his company and been fired. The FBI arrives and says he stole $4 million. |

In the continuation, Ned reveals he has hidden the money so his company could not ruin the lives of several hundred workers. The family initially hide him from the FBI but Steven doesn't want to. Ned compares his actions to their protesting in the 60s and Alex sneaks him to the airport. But Ned returns to face the music. His former boss arrives at the house demanding to know the code to the money, but Ned refuses. |

Alex's school quiz team is forced to find a replacement for a sick teammate. When he can't find someone qualified, he decides to train Mal like Eliza Doolittle. In the competition, Alex gets stage fright and can't answer. Mal saves the day with correct answers and with the judges approval, but their team still looses with the last question. |

Stacy propositions him, but can't convince him to have sex with her. When he gets home, Elyse admits she knew what was going on but that he had to decide for himself.
Next year Judith Light went on to star in competing sitcom Who's the Boss.

Crispin Glover guests as a friend of Alex's who takes Alex to West Virginia where the drinking age is 18 for his birthday. Elyse is sad when Alex won't share with her anymore and forbids him to go. He goes anyway and she follows him and brings him home. They fight, mostly because Alex doesn't treat Elyse like a person, not because he broke the rules to go drinking. Elyse recognizes she needs to treat him more like an adult and he realizes he needs to respect her.
One year later Crispin Glover played Michael J. Fox's dad in Back to the Future.

Tom Hanks returns as lovable Uncle Ned. No explanation about how his embezzlement problems turned out, but he's back and Steven has an interview set up for him as a job at the tv station. But since his last troubles he has become an alcoholic and drinks everything in the house. He bombs the interview. Steven, Elyse, and Alex try to convince him he has a problem, but he resists. When Alex keeps him from getting another drink, Ned hits him. Steven tells him to get out, but Ned breaks down and calls AA. |

Alex's attraction to a classmate leads him to join the ERA movement, much to his parents' surprise. At a rally, Alex comes to the defense of the women and they all get arrested. The girl, Deena, is turned on by his speech for feminism, so he stays in the jail to "support his sisters." Later Alex says he is only posing as a feminist to support Deena, but his parents tell him he should respect her by telling her the truth. |
