Gender | Female |
Age | 14 |
Family | Seth Sorenson, Grandma and Grandpa Sorenson, Mom (Kate, maiden name Larsen) and Dad |
Kendra is a 14 year old girl who is very careful about things. In Fablehaven she goes to the preserve thinking it was just a normal place to live but was wrong. She soon finds out that it was a magical fantasy preserve for magical creatures. When Bahumat the demon captures everyone in her family she goes to the fairy queen for help. She collects the tears that the fairy queen gives her, mixes them with milk and blood, and gets the fairies to drink the mixture. The mixture causes the fairies to grow quite large, and they rally into an army to defeat Murial and Bahumat. To get the fairies to drink the mixture of tears, she tastes the mixture herself as an example to them. Unbeknownst to her, this mixture is actually poison to humans, but the fairies save her by kissing her. Because of these kisses she becomes Fairystruck and can see the magical world without help, understand fairy languages, see in the dark, recharge dormant magical objects, and is immune to some forms of magic. Later it is discovered that she is not fairystruck, but "fairykind," a much rarer occurrence wherein the fairies change the person, imparting some of their own magic into the person and in some ways adopting the person as one of their own. In book 3 Kendra is told by some fairies that she has been selected as a handmaiden to the Fairy Queen. In Fablehaven: Rise of the Evening Star she finds that the new student in her class is an evil creature called a kobold. She listens to Errol Fisk (Christopher Vogel) who tells Kendra and her brother how to get rid of the kobold, but it turns out that Errol is a member of the Society of the Evening Star, and all that he has led them to do is a trick which results in a demon named Olloch the Glutton chasing after Seth with the intent to eat him. She is also friends with the fairy Silver, who makes Mendigo (Muriel's puppet) do what ever Kendra tells him to do. At the end of the second book Kendra battles a giant cat with nine lives that gets bigger every time you kill it. They retrieve one of the magical artifacts that, when combined, make a key to get into the most secure magical prison in the world. In the retrieval of the artifact, Christopher Vogal dies but Kendra, Warren, Tanu, Coulter, and Vanessa live. Vanessa is subsequently put into the Quiet Box, because it is evident that she is a traitor. In book 3, Grip of the Shadow Plague, Kendra is inducted into a group called the Knights of the Dawn, and sent on a mission to retrieve a second artifact from a preserve called Lost Mesa. Returning to Fablehaven, finding that the artifact is really in Fablehaven she goes to the Fairy Queen for help, gathers up an army of magical creatures, and she throws the pebble that can stop the plague to Lena and Lena touches the magic pebble to the nail that is causing the plague and makes everything bad go away. Kendra also learns that a boy named Gavin, has a crush on her.
[edit] Seth Sorenson

Species | Human |
Gender | Male |
Age | 12 |
Family | Kendra Sorenson, Grandma and Grandpa Sorenson, Mom and Dad |
Seth is Kendra's brother who causes a lot of mischief. Seth has great courage, but little patience, and he does not always think things through. In Fablehaven Seth gets turned into a giant walrus because he turned a fairy into an imp unintentionally by holding her captive overnight. The family then has to go to Muriel the witch to change him back, and as a consequence one of the knots that binds the witch is loosed. Seth is the one who opened the window on Midsummer's Eve allowing goblins and other creatures into the house. These creatures kidnapped Lena and Grandpa Sorensen, and also turned Dale into a statue. This left Seth and Kendra alone to find a way of rescuing them. They later have the help of Grandma Sorensen, after they loose Muriel's last knot in order to free Grandma from her altered state. In Fablehaven: Rise of the Evening Star, Seth went into a funeral home and got bitten by a statue of Olloch the Glutton causing the demon to awake and take up a quest to eat Seth. Olloch ate him eventually but he survived in a fairy cocoon given to him by Coulter. Seth didn't go to the inverted tower on the quest for the artifact and take part in the battle against the big cat with Kendra and Warren since he had to go back to the house because of injuries sustained during a confrontation with a revenant. He took many courage potions to overcome the aura of fear that the revenant radiated, and took a nail out of its neck, defeating it. This allowed Kendra and Warren to pass through the revenant's territory and enter the tower. The nail in the revenant's neck turns out to be a powerful object, and while in close contact with it Seth gained the ability to see some elements of darkness that are hidden to regular humans, and also he became immune to the kind of fear that radiated from the revenant, which also radiates from various other creatures of darkness, including the demon Graulus who appears in the third book. Also in the third book, Seth discover Coutler and Tanu as shadows and is the only one that can see them as shadows. Then when the group decides to get the artifact. Seth gets it and makes Patton come back to life. Everyone else is already shadows.

The kids do figure it out, but soon afterward Seth, in a moment of bad judgment, makes it possible for unsavory creatures to enter the house, and Grandpa and Lena are kidnapped. They are held hostage by the witch, Muriel, at an old chapel on the preserve where she is endeavoring to free a demon named Bahumat. Grandpa is married to Grandma Sorenson who spends much of the first book in the form of a chicken until Kendra and Seth change her back to a human, loosing Muriel's last knot and setting her free in the process. In book 2 Grandpa has joined with allies sent to Fablehaven by the Sphinx, in order to retrieve the sacred artifact from the preserve before their enemies get it. However, one of these people, Vanessa, turns out to be a traitor. If you find yourself unwilling to answer the question, or if you lie, the genie is allowed to take a small revenge on you. This one turned Grandma into a chicken. Grandpa named her Goldilocks to keep the situation hidden from the children, but he did put the cage in the kids' room and allow them to play with her and take care of her. In Fablehaven when all seems lost Grandma/Goldilocks spells out "I AM GRAM" on the floor with her kernels of food and they take her to Muriel to change her back. After Muriel gets released, Grandma takes them to Nero the troll because he has a seeing stone and can tell them where Grandpa and Lena are being held. But they must trade something for this information. They convince him to accept a massage in return for the information, and he agrees. After that, he went with Kendra to the Inverted Tower and battled through the many traps to retrieve the secret artifact. Then, after hearing that the Sphinx may in fact be an enemy, Warren went scouting for any information regarding the remaining artifacts. He also served as guardian to Kendra during her first meeting with the Knights of the Dawn in the third book. Warren also went on a mission with Kendra to get the artifact in Lost Mesa. She outlived Patton and had many exciting adventures, traveling the world. Now having grown old, she has returned to Fablehaven. She was kidnapped on Midsummer's Eve along with Grandpa and held captive by Muriel. After the battle, the fairies carry her back to her lake and restore her to her original form, giving her back her immortality but taking away her ability to love. She no longer seems to care about the problems of humans, even those who were her friends. In the second book, Kendra goes to the lake to seek her help, but Lena is just not the same person as she was when she was mortal. In book 3, Grip if the shadow Plague, she tells Kendra many things, and is returned to her human state. Later she says, "That spell [numbness of naiadic life] grips me only when I'm in there." He was destroyed in the battle against Muriel and Bahumat. The fairies rebuilt him, turning him into a true golem and giving him a spark of free will. In the second book and into the third he shows signs of being able to do things that he is not ordered to do. He starts to sing and he is able to form his own opinions, such as choosing a favorite flower. In the beginning of the third book Seth is able to get Hugo's help getting into the Nipsies' kingdoms by asking him to help instead of ordering it. Hugo is extremely strong. Seth had fun having Hugo throw pumpkins as far as he could, and in the third book Hugo and Mendigo play baseball. In Fablehaven: Grip of the Shadow Plague, Hugo is fit for battle by fairies. He helped in the fight with the "Shadow Lady", whose real name is Ephira, and Kurisock, the demon.

Mendigo was Muriel's limberjack. He was originally a small wooden puppet, but when Muriel was set free she made him grow and infused him with life. He is now similar to the way Hugo was before he got free will. He will follow any order given by his master. When he chases after Kendra in the first book she tricks him into going into the pond, where the naiads claim him and take him to the bottom of the lake. In the second book he reappears, still following his last order from Muriel, even though she has been buried under a hill. Some fairies use their magic to turn him to obey Kendra, and so he becomes an ally. He is quite a bit stronger than he looks, and he can carry two people at once while running. He carries Tanu home in the third book after he is bitten by the transformed satyr. He is often used as a guard. In Grip of the Shadow Plague he is disassembled by evil brownies and rigged to lethal traps. It is unclear whether he was reassembled or not.

He is apparently very good at his job as indicated by his procurement of a rare type of fairy, known as a Jinn Harp, of which there was thought to have only been one in the world. In one of the sequel books it is mentioned that Maddox went on a mission to a fallen preserve in Brazil and has not been heard from since. Tanu went to search for him, but did not succeed in finding him. He did, however, leave a tub behind that exists in the same time and space as an identical tub in the attic in Fablehaven. Theoretically Maddox could climb into the tub in Brazil and someone could pull him out of it in Fablehaven.

The satyrs are light hearted and fun, but they can be conniving. They tell Seth that if he brings them the batteries so that they can watch their portable television they will give him gold. Seth does bring them batteries and they give him gold which they have stolen from the troll, Nero. But Nero wants it back! Seth and the satyrs make a similar agreement in the third book, and they enlist the help of Hugo to steal gold from the Nipsies. They end up getting the gold as a tribute for helping the good nipsies fend off the nipsies that have been affected by the shadow plague. Later the dark nipsies infect Newel with the shadow plague. The satyrs enjoy stealing stew from the ogress and playing tennis with the equipment that Warren gave them. They are sometimes invited to parties inside the house. In the third book, Newel is turned into a dark satyr while Doren is not. Doren goes to the Fairy Queen's garden where he is safe. In the first book he comes under the control of the narcoblix, Vanessa, and unknowingly leads Seth into the grove of the revenant. He is paralyzed by fear and turned semi-catatonic albino just as Warren is. Just before this he manages to give Seth a fairy cocoon which protects the boy from both the revenant and Olloch the Glutton. [edit] Villains
[edit] Muriel Taggert
Muriel Taggert | |
---|---|
First appearance | Fablehaven |
Created by | Brandon Mull |
Information | |
Species | Human |
Gender | Female |
Muriel is the main villain of the first book. She used to be the wife of a previous caretaker, but she became enamored with dark magic and turned evil. For her crimes she was imprisoned in a shack on the grounds of Fablehaven, held from using magic by a rope with magical knots tied in it. The knots could only be undone by a human who asked for a favor of their own free will. The person would blow on a knot and Muriel would use the magical spark released by the undoing of the knot to grant the person the favor they sought. She had two knots left when Kendra and Seth came to Fablehaven. One was undone so that Seth could be restored after the fairies turned him into a walrus-like monstrosity, and she was finally freed by Kendra and Seth in order to restore Grandma from her chicken form. She tried to take over Fablehaven by releasing the demon Bahumat. Bahumat was bound by knots just as Muriel was, and she used the power in those knots to make imps as big as humans so that she could use them as her minions. Mendigo was also given life and turned big at this time, but it is unclear whether Muriel did this with her own power or used some of Bahumat's knot power to do so. She almost won the battle in the first book, but Kendra sought the help of the fairy queen and defeated Muriel with an army of fairies. The fairies bound Muriel in the ruins of the Forgotten Chapel, along with Bahumat, and they caused a hill to form over the ruins, hopefully sealing Muriel and Bahumat in forever.

Created by | Brandon Mull |
Information | |
Species | Demon |
Gender | Male |
Bahumat is an ancient demon who plagued the area before the preserve was founded. Some Europeans imprisoned him in exchange for acknowledgment of ownership of the land that he had terrorized. Fablehaven was founded on this land. In 1826 Bahumat almost escaped, and afterward was moved to a new location underneath the old chapel. He is bound by knots similar to those that bound Muriel, but in greater multitude. Bahumat is not seen till the end of the first book as Muriel is trying to release him. She succeeds, but the fairies prevail in the end and imprison him underground.

Vannesa | |
---|---|
First appearance | Fablehaven: Rise of the Evening Star |

Vanessa first appears at Kendra and Seth's home. She has been sent to pick them up and take them to Fablehaven, away from Errol. She is presented as a keeper of magical creatures. She later turns out to be a narcoblix, which is someone who can control people she has previously bitten any time they sleep or become unconscious. She is a traitor and a member of the Society of the Evening Star. Vanessa has black hair and Seth kind of had a crush on her in the beginning, although he gets over it after she is revealed as a traitor. She temporarily joins forces with Kendra and Warren in the inverted tower in order to defeat the guardian cat and secure the artifact. After she is defeated she is imprisoned in the quiet box in the dungeon of Fablehaven so that she cannot control anyone whom she has bitten. Before she is put into the quiet box she leaves a message for Kendra, warning that the Sphinx is a traitor. In the third book she is released for a short time in the hopes of gaining information from her.

He asked Kendra and her friends on a date, and kissed one of Kendra's friends. He went away after Kendra and Seth broke into what they were told was a vampire's house but actually turned out to be Coulter Dixon's house, where they got a frog demon named Olloch. The whole thing turned out to be a trick played on them to get their confidence built up in Errol, and in the long run it was a part of an even greater scheme to build confidence in Vanessa.

Being a hamadryad she was linked to a certain tree. After the Sphinx set the Dragon Prince free, he retrieved the Revenant's nail and drove it into the tree. With this evil power, Ephira started the shadow plague that turned creatures of light into creatures of dark. Ephira died when Lena pressed the enchanted stone to the nail in her tree which destroyed them both.

The Sphinx | |
---|---|
First appearance | Fablehaven: Rise of the Evening Star |
Created by | Brandon Mull |
Information | |
Species | Unknown |
Gender | Male |
Address | Different places all over the world |
The Sphinx is a conundrum. Nobody knows his true form, although there are many theories. When Grandma takes Kendra and Seth to meet him in the second book he is then in the form of a black man with very dark skin and dreadlocks. He guards his secrets very carefully and changes locations often. He is either the greatest ally of the good side, or a traitor, and their greatest enemy. In the end of Fablehaven: Rise of the Evening Star, he came to Fablehaven to imprison Vanessa in the quiet box, taking with him the prisoner who was in it before. He also took the artifact that was recovered. At present the evidence seems to indicate that the Sphinx is indeed a traitor. It is hinted at by Vanessa that the prisoner that the Sphinx took from the quiet box was the most powerful of the dark dragons in human form, and that the Sphinx released him into the preserve before leaving. According to the demon Graulus, the dragon then retrieved the nail that Seth pulled from the revenant's neck and took it to a demon living on the preserve before himself leaving the premises. Originally, when Warren questions Dougan about whether the Sphinx is the Captain of the Knights of the Dawn, Dougan denies it. At the end of the third book, however, Dougan confirmes that the Sphinx is in fact a traitor.

[edit] Other
Nero - Nero is the troll that told Grandma, Kendra, and Seth where the Grandpa and Lena are being held. Grandma and Grandpa go to him for help in the third book, but he is not seen by Kendra or Seth.
Shiara - Shiara is a fairy that changed Mendigo from bad to good. She makes many brief appearances in the third book. She is the only fairy Patton Burgess would trust. Shiara is one of the fairies who lead the fairy army in the first book.
Mom and Dad - Mom and Dad (Scott and Kate Sorenson and Kate or Marla Sorenson, nee Larsen) are Kendra and Seth's parents. Grandpa Sorensen reveals that Mom's name is Kate on page 5 of book one. But in book 3 Mom and Dad are referred to as "Scott and Marla" both on page 30 and page 33. The author has recently been questioned concerning this indiscrepancy, but no reply has been received yet. Mom and Dad are in the very beginning of Fablehaven when they are driving Kendra and Seth to Grandpa and Grandma's house. They are going on a Scandinavian cruise as laid out in Grandma and Grandpa Larsen's will. They are briefly in the second book when Kendra and Seth are being picked up by Vanessa.
Neil - One of the workers at the Lost Mesa secret preserve. He died when a chokepod touched him. He was a Native American, and also a Skinwalker, meaning he could turn into a horse at will.
Broadhoof and Cloudwing - Broadhoof and Cloudwing are two centaurs that dwell in Fablehaven. They make their appearance in Grip of the Shadow Plague. Patton duels with and defeats Broadhoof saving Seth from having to. Broadhoof is killed by Ephira in the final battle between light and dark creatures.
Graulus - A demon that has lived on Fablehaven very centuries. He was once one of the most feared deamons on the world. He is old now and basically came to Fablehaven to die. In Grip of the Shadow Plague he tells Seth where the shadow plague is coming from.
