Between 1842 and 1860 Gustav Fabergé's jewellery shop was by no means the leading one in St. Petersburg. The importance of the name of Fabergé has taken on in recent years tends to obscure the fact that he was not the only famous figure on the Russian art scene in the 19th and the early 20th century.
