[edit] Notes

  • Population figures of Alderney, Sark and Herm are deducted from the population of Bailiwick of Guernsey. These three islands are part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, but are separate islands.
  • The Swedish Wikipedia article Södermalm argues that Södermalm is not an island. I still include it along with other islands within Stockholm, such as Kungsholmen and Lidingö. Also Södertörn could be included, since both it and Södermalm can be rounded with a boat. Usually Södertörn is not seen as an island. Part of the boat passage is a dug canal with a lock.
  • It could be argued that some islands of Saint Petersburg, most notably Vasilievsky Island and Kamenny Island, should be added. But it is hard to find any statistics on them which is not in Russian.
  • It is hard to find statistics on Île de la Cité and Île Saint-Louis, the two islands in the Seine in Paris, or to decide whether they belong to the list.
  • Population figures of some small islands of Iceland (f.ex Heimaey] are deducted from the population of the republic of Iceland.
  • The population figure of Hisingen (a part of Gothenburg) is calculated in the Swedish Wikipedia article Hisingen to be 126 623.
  • The population figures of Orust and Tjörn are deducted with 1.000 from the minucipalities and rounded, simce there are few small villages on other islands.
  • The population figure of Ekerö is uncertain, because the municipality of Ekerö also include some other islands. The figure is roughly estimated.
  • Madeira Islands and Azores Islands of Portugal are not included, as they are not European islands.
  • Canary Islands of Spain are likewise not included, as they are not European islands either.
