Clemente wants to release him but Neela thinks he needs to remain in the E.R. Morris and Dr. Albright continues arguing about a patient and later they make out. Weaver had the surgery to correct her problem and she no longer needed a cane to walk. Pratt arrives to Darfur and quickly he notices the scope of the horror there. 20 265 "There Are No Angels Here" R. Scott Gemmil and David Zabel Christopher Chulack May 4, 2006 Pratt's work in Darfur brings him into contact with an injured Sheik and his pregnant wife. The Sudanese police hound the couple because of their political importance and prevent Pratt and Carter from caring for the Sheik. His wife delivers the baby while he is imprisoned and suffers post partum complication that necessitate transporting her to a surgical center. On the way Pratt and Dakarai (guest star Eamonn Walker) are attacked by Janjaweed soldiers and Pratt must continue the journey alone. 21 266 "The Gallant Hero and The Tragic Victor" R. Scott Gemmil Steve Shill May 11, 2006 Kovac is forced to take serious action as Clemente's behavior spirals out of control. Neela receives a job offer and tragic news. Pratt readjusts to American medicine while treating abused sons and their abusive father. Kovac and Abby take a quiet moment to dream about a vacation before the baby is born. 22 267 "Twenty-One Guns" David Zabel Nelson McCormick May 18, 2006 Pratt and Neela attend Gallant's funeral. Sam's ex-husband Steve and another inmate are brought into the ER after a prison fight. With the help of the other inmate's girlfriend, the men put their escape plan into action. Walking into the room, Luka inadvertently discovers their plan and is drugged and tied to a gurney, Sam convinces them to let her intubate him as the drug is paralyzing his lungs. The two men, with Sam forced to assist, finally make their way to the exit doors, but things don't go smoothly, and a major shoot-out ensues. The ER is in chaos; Jerry has been shot. The two men grab Sam and make it out of the building. She becomes their hostage, along with her son, Alex, who was already in the waiting getaway van. Back in the ER, the staff try to save Jerry, and Abby collapses just outside a trauma room where Luka is being treated; he helplessly watches her place a bloody handprint on the door window just before she slumps over and falls to the floor. Kerry is demoted to an attending after confessing that she, not Luka, was responsible for the Clemente fiasco. Paramedic Tony Gates from last season returns and offers emotional support to a still grieving Neela, and we learn that he is becoming an intern at the hospital. 3 270 "Somebody to Love" David Zabel Stephen Cragg October 5, 2006 Pratt's excitement at becoming an attending is cut short when he has to deal with interns. Gates and Pratt argue over a heart patient's treatment while the man's partner (John Mahoney) fights against the patients' family. Gates goes against Pratt's orders and does what he feels is right, which ultimately makes things worse on all fronts. After finding out Alex hasn't been talking to the psychologist that Sam has set him up with, she confronts him about it. Alex knows what Sam did to Steve. Neela mentors a new med student, and lends a hand when Pratt makes a serious error. Abby enrolls in a “Mommy and Me” class, but it’s not all fun and games, and Sam discovers Alex’s latest extracurricular activity. 5 272 "Ames v. Kovac" Joe Sachs Richard Thorpe October 19, 2006 Award winning actor/director Forest Whitaker begins a multi-episode arc as Curtis Ames, a carpenter who suffers a stroke under Luka’s care, and sues him for malpractice. In the opener, Luka and Ames square off in court as each man’s recollections of Ames’ treatment are recounted via testimony and flashbacks. Meanwhile, Luka worries about the implications of the suit and the possible outcomes. Abby returns to work and must adjust to the dramatic changes in her life. The tension between Gates and Pratt stop after a fight. Before Pratt had found his brother, Chazz, with his gay lover. The patient was unstable and ended up dying. Abby and the others in the helicopter then take over a new commission, a big car accident. She struggles to keep a little boy's mom alive who's stuck in a crashed bus. Meanwhile in the ER, Sam's son Alex is volunteering and keeps a patient, Lulu, company because her parents don't show up. Neela decides to take things slow with Gates, yet she started to make out with him. 10 277 "Tell Me No Secrets..." There’s a new nurse on the floor, but can he handle the ER? Pratt’s efforts at community service lead to an unanticipated turn of events. Gates’ home life intrudes on the ER, affecting Neela. Morris’ missing credit card has Sam concerned. 13 280 "A House Divided" R. Scott Gemmil Andrew Bernstein January 11, 2007 Gary Sutton, a man whose son and stepson got injured in a snow mobiling accident, argues with the doctors when it's clear he favors his natural son's well-being over the stepson's especially since he thinks the accident was the stepson's fault. Pratt is under investigation for his relationship to a church medical clinic. *Note: This is Dr. Weaver's Final Appearance. 14 281 "Murmurs of the Heart" David Zabel Christopher Chulack February 1, 2007 Ames breaks in and threatens Abby and baby Joe, telling her to call Kovac immediately. Pratt has been arrested for his involvement in the church's medical clinic. Kovac is trying to bail him out of jail but leaves when Abby calls him. Ames forces Kovac to leave with him when Kovac returns home. Abby contacts the police, who begin trying to locate Ames and Kovac in Ames's car. Sam's Grandmother Gracie and a friend named Ben are visiting when a fire breaks out in the building. Ben and Gracie get out but Sam and Alex are trapped in the building. 15 282 "Dying is Easy" Janine Sherman Barrois Tawnia McKiernan February 8, 2007 Morris is given a paper from upstairs and goes to Pratt, who is working with Hope and Gates on a young girl high on some drug, and tells Pratt that the Medical Board suspended Pratt's license so he can't work at County anymore. Pastor Watkins surprises Pratt and the board by showing up with the congregation to speak on Pratt's behalf. Hope also comes to support Pratt. Pratt and the group are dismayed then relieved when the board comes back with their decision. Ray and Neela spend time together getting coffee, talking about work. Sam is reluctant to get involved with Ben, from the previous episode. Patients include a little boy with possible head lice, a stand up comedian diagnosed with leukemia, a man who suffered severe burns while trying to cremate his cat on the stove, a young woman high on drugs and an overweight woman in her 30s who met a man online and later in real life then tripped on a fire hydrant while running after him when he stuck her with the bill. 16 283 "Crisis of Conscience" Lisa Zwerling Steve Shill February 15, 2007 Sam is overworked because some nurses are sick, others on vacation, etc. Gates and Kovac treat Anna Hayes (guest star Sean Young) who is vomiting and has an altered mental status. Sam is angry when a cop drops Alex at the ER after he stole quarters from a laundromat. Neela finds out unethical business is going on with the transplant program and blows the whistle on it. 17 284 "From Here to Paternity" Virgil Williams Lesli Linka Glatter February 22, 2007 Sam is not in a good mood because of Alex. She is thinking of sending him away at a school for at-risk teens. Kovac, Morris, and Sam treat Mario Dustin, a 42-year-old who has been shot in the chest, along with Donnie, another injured man. Ray treats a man with a broken nose. 18 285 "Photographs and Memories" Karen Maser Stephen Cragg April 12, 2007 Luka, Abby, Pratt, Morris and the team treat the victims of collision between a big-rig and family car, including the wife of the truck driver and the son of the car’s driver. Sam celebrates her birthday in the ER as she cares for a photographer who changes her outlook on life. Neela and Ray share some subtle signals, but what’s up? Gates is shadowed by a medical student who notices his errors. Wedding plans continue as Luka and Abby try to decide where to be married, but someone else is handling the bachelor party. 19 286 "Family Business" Joe Sachs Richard Thorpe April 19, 2007 While taking a self defense class, Sam hurts the teacher's knee. Luka and Tony treat a patient who's father has Alzheimer's disease and he can't remember the loss of his son, which bring memories back to Luka. Greg tries to reconnect with his brother and try to fix things. Tony and Sara find out the truth about Tony's paternity test. 20 287 "Lights Out" Janine Sherman Barrois Terrence Nightingall April 26, 2007 A photographer named Diana goes back to the E.R. and notifies Sam that her cancer is spreading. Luka needs to relocate all the staff to different departments of the Hospital since the E.R. was forced to close. Chaz (Pratt's brother) suffers an alcohol poisoning after he gets initiated by his EMT coworkers. Gates' father takes Sarah out to watch a movie and when they come back, Tony realizes that his dad has been drinking, which prompts Tony to pack his father's things and asks him to leave; they later get into a fistfight. Also, Kovac decides that he only wants to be a doctor and resigns as the E.R. chief 21 288 "I Don't" David Zabel Andrew Bernstein May 3, 2007 (9:53-11pm) The ER staff and other hospital personnel arrive at a mandatory department dinner, only to find to their surprise- including Abby's- that Luka, with Hope's aid, has planned his wedding to Abby that night. After first balking at the idea, Abby agrees and the wedding takes place. When Morris points out to Hope that Luka and Abby will not be using their honeymoon suite, Hope suggests that the two of them use it. Neela suffers through a strange night, attracting the romantic interest of Gates, Ray, her supervisor Dr. Dubenko, and a young (female) medical student. Ray, frustrated by Neela's indecision in choosing between himself and Gates, gets drunk and fights Gates. Ray leaves the wedding and goes to a bar to continue drinking. Neela breaks up with Gates and calls Ray; as Ray drunkenly stumbles to answer the call in the street, he is hit by a truck. 22 289 "Sea Change" Lisa Zwerling Laura Innes May 10, 2007 The ER reopens with apparently very few changes made. Luka and Abby celebrate their first few days as a married couple and prepare for their honeymoon. Hope and Morris are still spending time in the Honeymoon suite, and Morris is trying desperately to keep it up, feeling that it is his only chance to keep up their relationship. Pratt is incensed by his first meeting with ICU chief Dr. Kevin Moretti, who criticizes ER procedures. Dr. Dubenko orders Dr. Crenshaw to perform an audit to cut down on post-operative infections, so Crenshaw orders Neela to move a patient from post-op to ICU before Neela feels the patient is ready. The patient crashes and suffers possible brain damage, leading Moretti to share with Neela his desire to improve the overall working of the hospital to prevent needless deaths. Neela is looking for Ray; she visits his apartment and finds that his fish are dead. Hope tells Morris not to worry about their relationship. Gates talks to a lawyer who tells him that he stands a good chance to keep custody of Sarah; Sarah tells Gates that she wants to stay with him. Luka receives a phone call from Croatia. Dr. Moretti accepts the position as ER chief. 23 290 "The Honeymoon Is Over" R. Scott Gemmil and David Zabel Christopher Chulack May 17, 2007 The new Chief of Emergency Medicine Kevin Moretti (Stanley Tucci) makes an immediate impact on the ER on his first day, letting the doctors know that things are going to be different from now on; his point is especially made clear to several of the doctors, particularly Abby (whom he says botched the treatment of a woman who had come to the hospital seeking treatment). Meanwhile, Luka announces he is leaving the ER to travel to Croatia to be with his ailing father. Meanwhile, Gates loses his bid to get custody of Sarah (her grandparents arrive with legal documents demanding custody); he is left to assure a tearful Sarah that he will see her as often as he can. Neela finally receives a call from missing Ray's cell phone. She goes to see him in a hospital, only to find that he has had both of his legs amputated due to his accident. After Ray's mother takes him home to Baton Rouge, Ray's ex-girlfriend Katie tells Neela that the accident was Neela's fault. Neela is attending an anti-war rally when demonstrators begin clashing with war supporters; a smoke grenade goes off and Gates — who is trying get back with Neela — arrives just in time to be met by a stampeding crowd whilst Neela is being trampled by fleeing protesters. The ER staff differ on how proceed when a patient comes in with a bullet in him needed as evidence. Neela finds herself the object of more attention that she wants, or needs. Abby had passport woes, and struggles with the changes being made. Pratt and Morris find themselves forced to defend their actions, while Hope prepares for a new mission. Gates struggles his new assignment, until he befriends a precocious young patient who has already diagnosed himself with an incredibly rare condition, Fazio Londe syndrome. 3 293 "Officer Down" Janine Sherman Barrois Christopher Chulack October 11, 2007 Two wounded police auxiliary officers present challenges in the ER. Morris spends the day in an inexplicable bad mood, until he admits to Abby that his unsupportive father had just died. 4 294 "Gravity" Virgil Williams Stephen Cragg October 18, 2007 It's a bad day for Abby, who's missing the still-absent Luka, when Joe is brought to the ER after a fall and is unable to reach Luka. Elsewhere, the day puts family first as Morris cares for a frightened child and Pratt defends his brother. Neela returns to work, and Moretti returns from a conference. A patient's mother gives the ER staffers makeovers in appreciation. The ER gets a new receptionist. 5 295 "Under the Influence" Joe Sachs Anthony Hemingway October 25, 2007 As Morris prepares to take his written board exams, the staff tries to uncover details about Neela's unusual new intern. Meanwhile, Kovac's obligations to his family in Croatia leave Abby feeling the burden of single parenthood; and Moretti, pleased with Gates' performance in the ICU, reassigns him to the ER. 6 296 "The Test" Lisa Zwerling Felix Enriquez Alcala November 1, 2007 While Morris and Pratt cram for their boards, Abby defends the interns' performance to an underwhelmed Moretti, who has hired new attending Skye Wexler (Kari Matchett) to alleviate County's staffing crunch. Elsewhere, Harold turns to Neela for guidance on a personal matter; and a teenage patient feels neglected by the doctors and takes extreme measures. 7 297 "Blackout" David Zabel Christopher Chulack November 8, 2007 The ER is busy when the temperature rises and Chicago suffers a blackout. The team treat a number of elderly patients brought in after the air conditioning in their nursing home breaks down, and Abby and Pratt disagree over the diagnosis of a 3 month old baby with suspected colic. Dr Moretti meets up with his ex wife, who is in town for a conference. She’s worried about their son Daniel and Moretti says he will talk to him.
Morris and Pratt pass the boards and the team go out to celebrate. Later Abby wakes up in Moretti’s apartment, he tries to stop her as she leaves, obviously upset. When she gets home she finds Doris, her son’s latest babysitter on the phone to the police, concerned because by 3am Abby still hadn’t come home. Upset and a little drunk, Abby impulsively decides to go and see Luka, so she and her son head to the airport in an attempt to get a flight out to Croatia.8 298 "Coming Home" David Zabel Laura Innes November 15, 2007 Abby's attitude is beginning to affect the staff. Luka returns from Croatia a day early. Neela's intern makes her proud when he deftly handles a critical situation. Tony and Julia's tryst is interrupted when Sarah needs rescuing. Morris treats a British contestant injured during a cheese rolling event, and acts as adjudicator when the contestants come to blows over which of them won the competition.
Meanwhile Moretti gets an upsetting and serious phone call about his son and leaves as soon as possible to take a flight out to Providence.9 299 "Skye's the Limit" Karen Maser Paul McCrane November 29, 2007 It's time for changes at the ER when Anspaugh makes an unpopular decision and appoints Skye as ER chief over Pratt. Abby has old demons to fight with, which distance her from friends and family. Even Luka seems to be at a loss to help Abby. Love is in the air when a secret romance blooms between two doctors. 10 300 "300 Patients" Joe Sachs and David Zabel John Wells December 6, 2007 Sam, Pratt and Morris treat Melissa Tanner, a 61 year old woman with health problems, and her 19 year old son Lowell following a car accident. Lowell has Down’s syndrome and had been living in a foster home since he was a baby. Melissa had been visiting him every week without her husband’s knowledge. Also, Neela and Dubenko have been at the dress rehearsal for the hospital holiday pageant and Dubenko has been bitten on the leg. Meanwhile, following the death of his father, Luka and Abby prepare to fly out to Croatia and it appears that Abby is tackling her drinking problem. 11 301 "Status Quo" Janine Sherman Barrois Andrew Bernstein January 3, 2008 After being passed over for Chief of the ER, Pratt considers taking a position elsewhere, but reconsiders after working with Jeanie Boulet. She comes in after her son, Carlos, is admitted from an apparent head injury, and he is found to have a brain lesion -- possibly a sign of full-blown AIDS. Before they find out what's going on, he goes into convulsions. A woman soldier comes in with a broken leg, and is discovered to be pregnant. When her husband realizes that she got pregnant while separated from him when on duty in Iraq, she says her pregnancy is the result of her rape by her sergeant there. Neela's cousin is in town for a visit, and Morris and Harold compete for her affections. Neela earns an ortho rotation. 12 302 "Believe the Unseen" Virgil Williams Rob Hardy January 10, 2008 Abby checks out of rehab and finds her way back to the ER; Harold finds new confidence after a big night with Neela's cousin; multiple victims of a fire come in. 13 303 "Atonement" Lisa Zwerling Stephen Cragg January 17, 2008 A prison doctor seeks forgiveness after saving the son of a man he once executed, but the mother is unable to do so. Neela participates in the ortho v. surgery hockey match, but discovers the surgeons have a "ringer." Pratt confronts his issues with commitment when Betina wants to take their relationship to a new level. 14 304 "Owner of a Broken Heart" David Zabel and Joe Sachs Christopher Chulack April 10, 2008 Abby is about to travel to Croatia, back to Luka and a lot of memories are going around her head. A new atendant, Simon Brenner starts at the ER. Two women come to the ER as a multiple trauma. Another patient, called Mia comes into the ER after suffering chest pain. Sam's relationship with Tony intensifies after he and Julia break up and the chaplain heads off to Nepal. Morris tests a Taser on himself with very unpleasant results. 15 305 "…As the Day She Was Born" Shannon Goss Tawnia McKiernan April 17, 2008 Abby has arrived in Croatia to join Luka and Joe. A mother of four arrives in the ER and Neela helps take care of her. Neela meanwhile is in a terrible mood over her lack of any social life on her mostly-forgotten birthday. Sarah's grandfather becomes ill and Gates clashes with her grandmother and Morris over a course of treatment. Pratt puts his new management skills to the test, but is kicked to the curb by Bettina. 16 306 "Truth Will Out" Karen Maser (Story), Karen Maser & Lisa Zwerling (Teleplay) Andrew Bernstein April 24, 2008 Abby told Luka about her drinking and infidelity. Luka takes a job at a hospice for cancer patients, bonds with a patient played by Hal Holbrook, and makes a startling decision about his and Abby's future. Abby also clashes with Neela over treatment for a Korean kid suffering from leukemia, and shines when she saves a woman who's giving birth to her 13th child, before having a new interview for an attending position at County. Sam's sour attitude gets her grief from both Abby and Gates, so she makes a grand gesture towards the latter. Neela's mom of four has bad news and Neela helps her deal with it. Brenner turns out to be Anspaugh's nephew. The hospital staff hear the news of the robbery, comparing the couple to Bonnie and Clyde, but doesn't realize they are the same as those just admitted. When the young girl starts to bleed out, her boyfriend holds the hospital staff at gunpoint and forces them to operate in the ER. 18 308 "Tandem Repeats" Virgil Williams Anthony Hemingway May 8, 2008 Neela is shocked by Dubenko's decisions during her mom of four's surgery, and things get worse for her when she has to give the mom devastating news. Abby goes after a position at an upscale medical facility when it doesn't appear news on an Attending position is in the offing, but shines at County while treating a young woman with a huge family secret.
