List of Dreamcast network games

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a list of Dreamcast games that were or are online for Sega's 33k, 56k modem and broadband adapter. The BBA supported games such as Bomberman Online, Phantasy Star Online, POD, Quake III, 2k2 series and Unreal Tournament and connections through PCs widened the usage. Most games were hosted by SegaNet and GameSpy networks in the US. The European online service was called Dreamarena and run in a partnership between Sega Europe and BT. In Japan, the service was managed by Isao.Net. The games in the list below that can still be played online are 4x4 Evolution, Starlancer, Sega Web Browsers, Maximum Pool, Quake III Arena and Phantasy Star Online. Sega ceased supporting their servers for online gameplay in 2002 and a year later stopped paid servers for Phantasy Star Online in the US. This was followed by the closure of the PAL and Japanese servers for Phantasy Star Online in April 2007. It is still possible however to play this game online using the Schthack servers (see references below).

Most of the games offering online capabilities also included a web browser, which was upgraded frequently on GD-ROM and also came with the console. Initially these early browsers were set to connect directly via Sega's official dialup service, but they later released a version that could dialup through any third party ISP by allowing you to input a custom phone number. They can still be used to surf the Internet if the console is configured correctly, and if you're feeling clever you can connect your Dreamcast to your PC and share it's broadband connection (also in references).
