[edit] Main characters
[edit] Main protogonists
[edit] Maximillian
- Max (ユリス Yurisu?, Uris in the Japanese version) (voiced by Scott Menville) - A young inventor living with only his father (his mother disappeared when he was young) in the "present". Max comes from a wealthy family, but has no interest in privileged living amongst the bourgeoisie, preferring instead to work with an elderly friend, Cedric, in his mechanic shop. After a chance encounter, he overhears Flotsam - a homicidal circus ringmaster - pressuring the town mayor to produce a certain item. Soon Max is caught up in a conflict of epic proportions, spanning both time and space. Working with Monica and other characters, Max must "rebuild" the past to ensure a prosperous future. His weapons of choice are various wrenches, hammers, and hand-held guns. He also has the ability to pilot the Ridepod, a steampunk-inspired mech named "Steve". Max has one of three special amulets (Red Atlamillia) that enable travel through time, his allowing movement from the past into the future.
[edit] Monica
- Monica (モニカ Monika?) (voiced by Anndi McAfee) - A young princess, adept at both swordsmanship and magic, who hails from 100 years in the future. After the murder of her father at the hands of an enigmatic figure named Gaspard, she sets out on a journey through time to uncover a grim conspiracy. Her travels take her into the past, where she helps Max in a battle against the evil clown Flotsam, who, like her nemesis Gaspard, is a servant of Emperor Griffon. Afterwards she joins Max on the quest to rebuild time and put an end to Griffon's scheme. Her weapons of choice are various swords and special bracelets that enable her to use elemental magic. She also has the unusual ability to change into monsters, which avails her new combat options, as well as enabling her to talk to other monsters of the same "type". Monica has one of three special amulets (Blue Atlamillia) that enable travel through time, hers allowing movement from the future back into the past.
[edit] Main antagonists
[edit] Griffon
- Griffon (グリフォン大帝 Gurifon-taitei?) (voiced by Mark Hamill) - An evil emperor, he is the main villain in the game.. Griffon is the owner of the Sun Atlamilla, which gives him immense power. He uses the Sun Atlamilla to distort time. Although he has this power, he still strives to find the other two atlamilla which will give him even more power. Throughout the game, pictures and stories depict Griffon to be an enormous and masterful giant with wings giving him his name. In actual fact this is untrue- Griffon is in fact a small moon person wearing the original blue robe garments of the moon people from the original game. Griffon proves to have amazing power despite his stature and eventually steals the other two atlamillia from the children, transforming into the emperor that Max and Monica were expecting. This means that they were probably the ones who caused Griffon to be such a powerful image, explaining his appearances in the people of the futures mind and thus not causing a paradox. However, Griffon planned to change this by warping himself to the future where he would wipe out everything including himself. Even his past life revealed did not heal him. Eventually, in his final plan, he tried to make the moon crash down to earth and destroy everything, but once beaten it was revealed that he was being controlled by the Dark Genie's curse- the dark element. Max and Monica defeated Dark Element and prevented the moon from destroying the world.
Griffon has an obvious obsession with flowers, a past time of his which became obsessive after Alexadra was killed. This would explain his various pictures of meadows, his palace's name and why he may have destroyed his old garden.
[edit] Dark Genie
- Dark Genie (Voicer Unknown). He is the true main villain in the game and is the mysterious new boss of Flotsam in the Zelmite Mine. He had used a curse to absorb into Emperor Griffon, which will sometime have a later effect on his life. The Genie's curse hit Sirus and then Sirus did the rest and created the Dark Element, which made the evil mind for Griffon. But, then he was lifted from the Genie's curse like always, the curse made by the Dark Genie always gets lifted by strong humans. Also, the Dark Genie had further plans after finding out that his curse on Sirus broke. Also, he became the replacement master of Flotsam after Flotsam was majorly brused from falling off the train in the forest. So, Flotsam found his way back to town and ended up meeting the Dark Genie. He then cured Flotsam's injuries and made him stronger. But, Flotsam moved out on him. The Dark Genie stayed in the Zelmite lair for the whole entire game, hoping nobody else would come. He doesn't know much about the Blackstone railroad going around the world, but he didn't care, if he was guarding a precious what he called jewel. But, he was stopped in the end after attempting to eat Max and Monica. He shrank exactly like he did at the end of Dark Cloud.
It is unknown why he appears in his large, rotund form, considering how this was only the form of a mouse that absorbed the dark genie. Perhaps the genie simply enjoys this form, or perhaps because it was not combined with the original host Seda.
[edit] Supporting Characters
[edit] Cedric
- Cedric (voiced by Paul Eiding) - Cedric owns the mechanic shop where Max works. He is good friends with Mayor Need. Cedric is the one who manages to persuade Mayor Need to spill the beans on what is going on outside Palm Brinks. He is honest and is supportive of Max, and he often sends them off on their missions with, "Go get 'em!". He assists with the Blackstone Railroad. If the player talks to him while he is inhabiting Heim Rada, he tells them how he feels like this is his place in time with Borneo and Erik creating Gundorada.
[edit] Mayor Need
- Mayor Need (voiced by Alan Oppenheimer) - Mayor Need has a squeaky, pathetic voice. He keeps the town of Palm Brinks in order, which often isn't a problem - things rarely happen in Palm Brinks. Despite this lack of pressure, Mayor Need is always nervous-sounding. This is explainably from the pressure from circus ringleader Flotsam, who works for Emperor Griffon then The Dark Genie. Part of Mayor Need's job is to keep what occurs outside the town walls a secret from the townspeople, because he thinks it would trigger them into panic. He has a daughter called Claire, and has a great love for Roasted Chestnuts, an item which Max can find in Rainbow Butterfly Wood.
[edit] Flotsam
- Flotsam (voiced by Phil Proctor) - Flotsam is the leader of the circus troupe that regularly visits Palm Brinks (seemingly their only outside contact). He wears face-paints continuously and is comically fat. Despite this, he is very agile, and has the ability to float. He works for Griffon, who only left the city of Palm Brinks standing because somewhere in it was housed the red Atlamillia. Flotsam pressures Mayor Need to find it, threatening to tell the townspeople about the outside world if he doesn't. He even goes so far as to hurt Mayor Need. Max witnesses this, and Flotsam sees the Atlamillia hanging from his neck. He pursues him, using his circus elephant, Linda, and the giant robot Halloween, to either convince Max to give him the Atlamillia, or kill him for it. Max defeats Flotsam twice while in Palm Brinks, and heads out on the Blackstone. Flotsam chases the train down with his armored ATV, the P-3000, and attempts to destroy it with his turret. When the ATV gets finished off from Max throwing bombs at it, Flotsam leaps from the wreckage onto the Blackstone. He throws off his vest, which reveals a belt made of dynamite. Flotsam threatens to ignite them, and Max doesn't know how to react. Monica appears behind Flotsam, disarms the dynamite, and throws him overboard. The last you see of Flotsam for a while is him angrily staring up from the tracks towards Max. Much later, he somehow joins forces with the Dark Genie and appears as a boss in the optional dungeon of the Zelmite Mines, with the new name "Metal Flotsam". Parts of his body have been rebuilt with robotic parts, and he is a much tougher adversary than before. Once he is defeated, Metal Flotsam tells Max and Monica that they won't be able to defeat his new boss before exploding.
[edit] Jurak
- Jurak (voiced by Gregg Berger) - Jurak is a magical tree spirit. Max and Monica revive him by restoring his origin point, previously wiped out by Griffon, for Jurak was too much of a threat to him. Jurak is viewed as a very wise old tree, a trove of information. Despite this, he talks extremely slowly, each word drawn out at the end, and since being erased from existence has a slow memory. Max and Monica have a lot of trouble getting the answers from him. When fully re-born, his "nostrils" and branches form a kind of line of shops, where Max and Monica can buy elusive items such as Monster Transformation badges and gold paint.
[edit] Conda and the Firbits
- Conda and the Firbits (Conda voiced by Armin Shimerman) - These dwarf-like people live in Sindain. There may have been many more of them, but only seven, including their leader Conda, are left. The Sindain Firbits possess a huge machine called the Carpenterion that can create environments, which helps Max and Monica replace origin points throughout the game. However, before Max and Monica get their full support, they are asked to find out what happened to Holly, whom had befriended them.
- There are also other Firbits scattered around the world. Several are in the future of Sindain, and a few live in Palm Brinks. All Firbits are suspicious of humans, love grape juice, and usually only help people that can prove they are better.
[edit] Holly
- Holly/The Rainbow Butterfly (voiced by Jennifer Hale) - According to the Firbits, anyone who laid eyes on the Mystical Rainbow Butterfly, would never leave the forest again (the culprit ends up to be a self-obsessed fish called King Mardan). Conda advises Max and Monica that if they should see the Rainbow butterfly, they should "Just pretend you didn't see it."
- Holly was a woman who lived with the Firbits for a while. Despite being a human, Holly is referred to most highly among the Firbits. She is described as the sweetest kindest soul there ever was. She used to cook the best potato pies, and this leads Max to believe that Holly could be his mother, who also cooked good potato pies, his favorite food.
- Eventually it is revealed that Holly and The Rainbow Butterfly are one and the same. Holly was a young Rainbow Butterfly, but she got caught in some webbing. She struggled, but couldn't get free. She waited for her untimely death, but some Firbits came along and freed her. She was overjoyed. She fully matured into a full-grown Rainbow Butterfly, and earned many magical powers. She decided to change into a human, and reward the Firbits for helping her. But the forest beckoned her, and she had to leave them.
- The Rainbow Butterfly grows wilder in the forest. Max and Monica defeat her, and she changes back to Holly. Holly tells them that they had just saved her in defeating her wilder self, but had to change back. She leaves a note explaining everything to the Firbits, who still mourn terribly for her. Conda knew Holly wasn't human by her scent, but appearances didn't matter to them.
[edit] Crest
- Crest (voiced by Jason Marsden) - Crest, before his death, was the guardian of the sacred moon crystal of Starlight Canyon. After hearing stories of a great sage saving an entire village from bandits, he tells his apprentence Lin of his aspirations to become a sage himself. Originally, he was supposed to be a sage, and the leader of the moon people, but seeing this, Emperor Griffon ordered his assistant Gaspard to kill him while he was guarding the Moon Crystal. This left Lin in a deep depression, but Max and Monica were determined to help her, and go back in time to save Crest. Although they could not save Crest, Lin is determined to become a sage herself, to preserve his legacy. She did achieve this, and in her rule, to commemorate him, she went by the name "Master Crest". This would mean that Crest would not have become a sage either way, but instead, Lin was always fated to become one.
[edit] Pau
- Pau (voiced by Jeannie Elias) - Pau is a moon person who lives in Veniccio. He looks after a Shigura, a baby sea dragon who was separated from its herd. He named it Shingala, and became close friends. Before Max and Monica arrive, Shingala had injured itself while playing on nearby cliffs. Noticing that human medicine has no effect on sea dragons, Pau requests that Max finds a treatment that will work. While they search, Shingala and his herd are hypnotized by Dr. Jaming. Max and Monica defeat Jaming to free both Shingala and the others at Shigura Village. After everything in Veniccio is normal again, Shingala returns to his family, leaving Pau free from responsibility of nursing it.
[edit] Gaspard
- Gaspard (voiced by Rino Romano) - Gaspard works for Griffon, and confronts Max and Monica many times throughout the game. He is the one who kills Monica's father in the future. He has white hair, and wears a cloak like a vampire, and has a sword that looks like a bigger version of the "Serpent Slicer". He is often seen piloting a huge boat/blimp hybrid called the Death Ark. His evil deeds include making embers rain down on Heim Rada (this prevents Max and Monica from building wooden structures as an origin point here, for they would be destroyed by the future), opening fire on the Lighthouse at Starlight Canyon, murdering Monica's father, and controlling the minds of the Shigura (which was actually carried out by Dr. Jamming, though Gaspard was behind it).
- During his final meeting with Max and Monica (at that point he has an unconscious Monica held hostage) he is defeated by Max and then Monica awakens and attempts to kill him. Gaspard counters her, pushing her back, and then his story starts to unfold. He was the child of a human mother and demon father. His father died when he was still a boy and after his death, Gaspard and his mother were chased out of this village they lived in, for the villagers feared his father because he was a demon. Gaspard and his mother traveled from village to village and his mother was exhausted that one day she fell terribly ill. On her deathbed, she tells Gaspard he must find something he wants to protect even if it takes his whole life. He didn't understand and instead was driven by hate and evil and came to work for Griffon. At that point he tells Max and Monica to never give up and decides he wants to see the end of their journey, he attempts to leave but is stopped by Griffon's power, and is turned into a raging flame demon. Monica and Max have no choice but to kill him. After his defeat, he turns back to his humanoid form. Max and Monica come to his side, and he states that he wont be able to see their journey to its end after all. His last words were that when he sees his mother, he'll tell her that he finally met them both. When he enters the afterlife and meets his mother once again he starts telling her all about Max and Monica's crazy adventures, as if it had just happened at school that day, and his mother is overjoyed, because Gaspard found the goodness in people after all, that he has protected the future by telling Max and Monica to never give up and to keep protecting those who are precious to them.

[edit] Other Miscellaneous Characters
- Elena (voiced by Kath Soucie) - Max's mother and the wife of Gerald. When Griffon's plot to take possession of the atlamillia is uncovered, the resistance in Monica's time comes up with a plan to protect the holder of the red atlamillia. Unfortunately, the red atlamillia did not exist in Monica's time, it existed 100 years in the past. So, Elena volunteered herself to protect the holder of the red atlamillia, which was Gerald. During Elena's time with Gerald, she eventually fell in love with him and the two got married. Elena gave birth to Max a few months later and cared for him for the first five years. However, as the war against Griffon was intensifying, Elena needed to return to her time to support the resistance. She meets Max again in the main laboratory of the Lunatic Wisdom Laboratory. It is here where she finally reveals to Max that she is from the future just like Monica. She eventually plays a role in helping Max and Monica to defeat Emperor Griffon by giving useful advice. After Griffon is defeated, Elena says her final farewell to Max and the two never see each other again. However, since Max had wanted to tell all about the adventures, he promised to write a letter telling everything about their journey (the letter is Max's narration) and would leave it at a certain place so that it would stay there for a century, thus enabling her to read it.
- Galen Agaris (voiced by James Horan) - Leader of the resistance group in the Gundorada Workshop. His origin point is erased by Gaspard but is brought back by Max and Monica's actions. He plays a small role in giving the orders on the Paznos fortress. He is a friend of the now deceased King Raybrandt and gives Monica the king's sword when Gundorada is complete. Because of the way he looks and the methods used to restore his origin point (Bring Gerald who is Max's father to Heim Rada), he may be a descendant of Max's bloodline. Some even believe he is the son of Max and Monica. Though, this would be impossible given the fact that Monica is from the same era as Galen, and if she and Max had had a child, it would have created a paradox.
- King Raybrandt - The father of Monica who met his unfortunate end at the hands of Gaspard at the very beginning of the game, while Monica looked on in disbelief.
- Doctor Osmond (voiced by Michael Bell) - A Luna Lab researcher in the Lunatic Wisdom Laboratory. He plays a role in the game by helping Max and Monica with a troubled Shigura by giving them an electric worm to short out the mind control device on the Shigura and manning the controls of the Ixion (possibly the same Osmond from Dark Cloud, or a relative). His actions as the game goes on lead to him taking the place of Cedric as the helper of Max and Monica. This could be a throwback to his/the original Osmond's actions in Dark Cloud.
- Doctor Nobb (voiced by Ryan O'Donohue) - The director of the Lunatic Wisdom Laboratory. He plays a role by giving Max and Monica a device to help them communicate with Shiguras and was one of the developers of the Ixion. He is a child. He somewhat resembles Donny, one of the recruitable characters, which is very much possible, because you need Donny before Nobb appears.
- Doctor Jaming (voiced by Cam Clarke) - Dr Jaming was once Gaspards personal scientist. When his name comes up as a 'tragic figure,' it suggests his ugliness is due to some incident. He has a slight obsession with rock inspired inventions rather than the steam punk inspired world, making his inventions often garish and wired. He even plays the electric guitar for his entrance. Eventually, after his defeat, he realises that the Shigura would rather help him despite his brainwashing acts against them. The leads to him having a change of heart, and allowing his grandson (also called Jaming) to become a respected member of Lunar Labs in the future.
- Garek - The plant manager of the Gundorada Workshop who gives Max a time bomb to destroy the Fire Squall of the past. He seems to be descended from the recruitable character Borneo.
- Alexandra (voiced by Jeannie Elias) - A queen who became a close friend of Sirus. When her kingdom was attacked she stood her ground, despite Sirus's pleas that she escape, and was killed. She shows up as a ghost when Max and Monica arrive at the Moon Flower Palace for the second time, and begs of them to restore the front garden of the palace to its former self; hoping that it would open up Sirus's heart to his good side.
