[edit] Abel

  • Nationality: Unknown
  • Age: Unknown
  • Height: Unknown
  • Weight: Unknown
  • Blood Type: Unknown
  • Occupation: Leader of the Soshiki
  • Weapon: Bare fists

Abel is the leader of the Soshiki, a rival organization of Master's Himitsu Kessha. Abel was an avid worshipper of Agon Teos, whom he believed to be the Toshin, the God of Fighting. He has a number of loyal followers, including:

  • Vermilion: his fiercest fighter and second-in-command
  • Miss Til: his personal fortune teller and third-in-command
  • Schultz: the ritual practitioner and fourth-in-command

Abel's plan was to revive Agon Teos using the blood of powerful warriors and give him a human body. He had sent out Vermilion to the second Toshindabukai to gather information about the Toshin fighters and see if their blood could be used for the ritual. Although Vermilion was discovered and defeated by Sho, he was successful nonetheless. With the information, Abel concluded that they were powerful enough.

For the human body, Abel had chosen a teenage boy named David, whose parents were killed. Abel attacked David and tried to capture him, but he escaped and sought refuge with Shizuku.

To complete the ritual, Abel decided to hold the third Toshindabukai and draw out the fighters. However, the Toshin fighters were more powerful than he had expected and they easily killed most of his followers. Abel himself was eventually confronted by Eiji who, after a long battle, managed to defeat and kill Abel. With Abel's death, the Soshiki had fallen and most of its warriors were slain, except Vermilion, who would later rise again to participate in the fourth Toshindabukai held by Eiji.

[edit] Adam

  • Nationality: Unknown
  • Age: Unknown
  • Height: 200 cm
  • Weight: 400 kg
  • Blood Type: N/A
  • Occupation: Robot assassin
  • Weapon: Cannon arm

Adam is a cybernetic robot whose true origins or in his case, activation, is unknown. He has been with the Soshiki Organization since its inception and has been on most of its nefarious missions. However, although he was designed to be a simple killing machine, Adam possesses thoughts and emotions.

One day during an assassination mission, Adam had met a teenage human girl and instantly fell in love with her, but this concept posed as a problem for Adam. As a fully-fledged robot, he could never love a human and the chance of them being together was highly unlikely. However, Adam was surprised to learn from Abel that he could grant Adam's wish in gaining a human body if he was to participate in the third Toshindaibuki as part of the Soshiki's plan to bring back Agon Teos: a fighting god. Not willing to pass this chance up, Adam had agreed with Abel on the plan and battled in the third tournament, hoping to win so that he could gain his long-sought human body.

Sadly for Adam, his dream would never come to pass, for Rungo Iron, a Toshin fighter and Adam's specific target, had defeated the robot, turning him into a pile of scrap metal beyond repair.

[edit] Atahua

  • Nationality: South American (Peru)
  • Age: 17
  • Height: 155 cm
  • Weight: 42 kg
  • Blood Type: B
  • Occupation: Tribesman
  • Weapon: Twin blowguns

Atahua is a South American teenage boy who seeks the restoration of his fallen tribe's empire. Raised on the beliefs that his empire was considered the most powerful in South American history, Atahua done everything he could in order to preserve the legacy of his people's past.

With the help of his mentor and adoptive father Tau, Atahua had decided to join the Soshiki in hopes of restoring his tribe's empire through the help of Abel. However, Abel had told Atahua that if he wanted his long-sought dream to come true, he would have to be an assassin for him and eliminate a certain fighter that was to come to the third Toshindaibukai, of which Abel was hosting. Within time, Atahua had learned that his target was a teenage girl named Ellis.

Atahua spent the next few days training himself so that he could copy and mimic Ellis' fighting style from point to point. When the third Toshindaibukai had arrived, Atahua had confronted Ellis from within their match and battled against her with all of his might, hoping to fulfill his ambition. However, the fight between Atahua and Ellis had came to an unexpected end when Tau appeared and told Atahua to forfeit the match. Through the explanation of Tau, Atahua had learned that his ancestors wouldn't be proud of his recent actions and that the murder of a fighter wouldn't justify the means of restoring an empire.

Realizing that his adoptive father was correct, Atahua had agreed with him on his idea and forfeited his match, realizing that fighting a pointless battle wouldn't grant his own wish.

Since the defeat of the Soshiki, Atahua and Tau have gone back to South America so that they can preserve the legacy of their tribe's empire through the right means of method.

[edit] Balga

  • Nationality: Norwegian
  • Age: 33
  • Height: 192 cm
  • Weight: 80 kg
  • Blood Type: O
  • Occupation: Knight
  • Weapon: Knight sword and shield

Balga is a Norwegian knight who seeks to defeat all who stand in his way, so that he can honor the name of his chivalrous family. Trained to be the heir of his family's legacy, Balga had endured countless years of swordplay and practice so that he can have no flaws or faults from within any battle that he gets himself into. Besides having to honor his family's name, Balga's second purpose in life is to eliminate the last heir of his family's sworn enemy clan, the Ramberts of France; the heir being none other than Duke B. Rambert himself.

One day, Balga gets an unexpected visit from a man named Abel, who tells Balga that he can grant him the chance to kill Duke if he was to come to the third Toshindaibukai and work for his organization known only as the Soshiki. Knowing that this was his best chance to kill Duke and destroy the Rambert bloodline, Balga accepted Abel's offer and went to the tournament in high hopes of killing his long-time rival. When their match came, Balga had fought against Duke unfairly, focusing on nothing more than eliminating him and any chance for a chivalrous battle between the two knights was thrown out the window. Unfortunately for Balga, Duke's strength had proven to be too much for him and Balga ended up being slain by Duke instead.

[edit] Bayhou

  • Nationality: Chinese
  • Age: Unknown
  • Height: 145 cm
  • Weight: 38 kg
  • Blood Type: Unknown
  • Occupation: Humanoid ape
  • Weapon: Iron claws (Rumored to be Fo Fai's)

Bayhou is a humanoid ape who lives in the secluded mountains of China. Little is known about this creature and the few people who have encountered Bayhou and lived to tell the tale say that his mindset is split into two halves: one being calm and peaceful while the other being wild and ferocious.

The people who live near the secluded mountains say that Bayhou is the reincarnation of a Chinese monkey god and that the only thing he seeks is total seclusion. Those who are foolish enough to enter into Bayhou's territory are never seen again and their remains are often found a few days later. This fact didn't faze Fo Fai, a Chinese assassin who sought Bayhou out for his own personal reasons. Fo Fai went into Bayhou's territory with no second thought and upon discovering Bayhou with his own sight, asked him if he wanted to play with his "shiny metal gloves". When Bayhou had nodded in agreement, Fo had taken off his claws and given them to Bayhou with no hesitation. Upon teaching Bayhou some of his best moves, Fo had turned his back away from Bayhou and looked at the blue skies peacefully, knowing that his time on Earth was drawing to an end. As Bayhou saw that Fo's back was turned on him, the animalistic nature and lust for blood had blinded Bayhou's thoughs in an instant and with little impulse, Bayhou had rushed towards Fo's position and threw a devastating slash against Fo's upper back. As Fo screamed in agonizing pain, his blood had splattered across the ground and upon Bayhou himself.

Upon seeing that Fo had fallen to the ground and died instantly from his attack, Bayhou had wasted no time in decapitating Fo's head so that he could keep it as a "trophy", hanging it on his back through the use of Fo's cap. After killing Fo, Bayhou's lust for blood had skyrocketed to higher levels and he sought more opponents so that he could slash them to pieces through the use of the now deceased Fo's claws. After killing a few low-rank assassins of the Soshiki Organization (of which they came after him in his secluded home), Bayhou would be drawn to the third Toshindaibukai in hopes of finding more victims, but his rampage would be stopped by a young girl named Cuiling, who killed Bayhou with her Spirit Ball attack. (Ironically, it was Fo himself who taught Cuiling a couple of his moves).

[edit] Chaos

  • Nationality: Sri Lankan
  • Age: 36 (at the time of Battle Arena Toshinden 3)
  • Height: 235 cm
  • Weight: 70 kg
  • Blood Type: B
  • Occupation: Assassin
  • Weapon: Sickle and Genbu no tate (translated as the Black Tortoise shield)

Chaos was one of the executives of the Himitsu Kessha, sharing equal footing with Gaia and Uranus. However, in her bids to assume even more power, Uranus suggested Chaos be the guinea pig in an experiment to artificially augment the human body and brain. While Chaos' natural fighting skills were enhanced, the experience shattered his mind and drove him insane. Despite his broken psyche, his position among the top four was held. When Gaia illegally held his own Toshindaibukai, Uranus declared him a traitor and persuaded Chaos to assassinate him. Due to Gaia's appearance in the third game, it is assumed he failed, although Chaos also reprises his role.

In Toshinden: Subaru, the character Genma is now in possession of the shield once carried by Chaos, indicating a high probability that he was killed by Genma.

[edit] Cuiling

  • Nationality: Chinese (Hong Kong)
  • Age: 15
  • Height: 151 cm
  • Weight: 40 kg
  • Blood Type: A
  • Occupation: Assassin
  • Weapon: Iron claws

Cuiling is a young female assassin from Hong Kong. Raised from early childhood by a triad, Cuiling had learned everything about the concepts of assassination, being told that she was to sever all emotional ties of humanity so that she could carry out her missions effectively. However, one of the triad's long-time members had softened Cuiling's heart, telling her that taking the life of an innocent person was wrong and that it would deeply affect those who cared for them. Upon hearing this (and many more lectures from the member), Cuiling had realized that she could never be a fully-fledged assassin, as her heart was beginning to cry out in emotional pain. (This comes from the fact that Cuiling was orphaned as a baby and didn't have any parents to look up to).

One day, the leaders of Cuiling's triad had told her that she would receive special training from a well-known Chinese assassin and that it was considered an honor to be trained under this man. The assassin, known as Fo Fai, had taken Cuiling to his secluded temple and trained her relentlessly day and night, not showing any mercy or sympathy towards Cuiling while teaching her some of his trademark moves such as the Mystic Sphere and the Pagoda Kick. Despite learning about Fo's background as a cold and bloodthirsty assassin, Cuiling had admired Fo's determination and eventually regarded him as a grandfather-like figure. After her training with Fo was over, Cuiling went back to Hong Kong and continued to be an assassin for the triad, doing many jobs for them while earning the nickname "the demon with the beautiful mask".

After her last job, Cuiling had learned from her bosses that she would be employed by a shrouded man named Abel, who sought to bring back the fallen fighting god, Agon Teos. Despite the fact that she and the rest of the triad were payed well by Abel, Cuiling distrusted him and sensed an eerie vibe from within his soul. Nevertheless, she reluctantly entered the third Toshindaibukai.

During the tournament, Cuiling encountered a humanoid ape named Bayhou, who carried the same type of fighting style that she and Fo had. Within the battle between her and Bayhou, Cuiling was shocked to see that Bayhou had a skull hanging on his back and that it looked familiar to her. Upon further examination, Cuiling was horrified to see that the skull was none other than Fo's and that it was implied that Fo himself was killed not too long ago by Bayhou. In an act of pure rage, Cuiling had unleashed her relentless fury against Bayhou and killed him with a devastating Spirit Ball attack.

After killing Bayhou, Cuiling realized that Abel had to be stopped before he could succeed with his malevolent plan. Near the end of the tournament, Cuiling switched sides and joined forces with Eiji and the other Toshin fighters, telling them about the location of Abel's secret ritual site. Though she and the other secondary Toshin fighters were separated from Eiji during the final climax of the battle, Cuiling was determined to help her new friends and end the nightmare so that she could live to see the next day. Upon hearing that Eiji had slain Abel in the final fight, Cuiling was relieved to know that the evil threat was over. Deciding to retire from the lifestyle of a fighter and assassin, Cuiling moved to mainland China so that she could begin a new life as a normal woman.

[edit] Cupido

  • Nationality: Unknown
  • Age: Unknown
  • Blood Type: Unknown
  • Height: Unknown
  • Weight: Unknown
  • Occupation: Mystic seer
  • Weapon: Halberd

Cupido is a secret character in the Sega Saturn version of Battle Arena Toshinden (named "Battle Arena Toshinden Remix"). Not much is known about her, however, until later games in which she is no longer a playable character. She is revealed in the manga to be a member of the Shitennou, an elite position in the Himitsu Kessha, and most notably Master's right hand. She is highly aware of many of the characters' pasts and personal affairs and offers them cryptic advice upon defeat. She was revealed as the sister of Ripper, indicating possible Chinese origin. She has also been strongly linked with Sho Shinjo and might be the mother of Subaru Shinjo given her implied relationship with Sho. She was originally planned to debut in the third game under the name of Chaos, but this was changed and her sole appearances so far have been limited to the Saturn and Japanese-only titles like Toshinden Card Quest.

[edit] David

  • Nationality: English
  • Age: 15
  • Height: 168 cm
  • Weight: 56 kg
  • Blood Type: AB
  • Occupation: Wanderering fighter
  • Weapon: Chainsaw and handgun

David is a teenage boy whose parents were murdered when he was young. He grew up alone in an orphanage and his heart became closed to the world. Before the third Toshindabukai was held, David was targeted by the Soshiki Organization led by Abel, who wanted to use his body for a ritual to revive a fallen fighting god known as Agon Teos. Although wounded from the battle against some of the Soshiki's low-rank warriors, David escaped and sought refuge with a kind-hearted wandering gambler named Shizuku Fuji.

Together, the two had joined Eiji and the other Toshin warriors in the third Toshindabukai so that they could bring down the Soshiki. During the tournament, David was forced to fight his old friend Judgement, who had given up his humanity for dark powers. With regret in his heart, David had no other choice but to kill Judgement. It is unknown to what happened to David after the third tournament, but it's likely that he went back home with Shizuku in order to build a new life.

[edit] Duke B. Rambert

  • Nationality: French
  • Age: 31 (at the time of Battle Arena Toshinden 3)
  • Height: 190 cm
  • Weight: 75 kg
  • Blood Type: A
  • Occupation: Swordsman
  • Weapon: Dernier Ventcour; legendary two-handed sword

Duke is a French nobleman, and a champion knight of his king's castle in France. Duke was considered the strongest fighter in France until a young Japanese world-traveller named Eiji Shinjo was challenged to a duel by him. Eiji easily bested the arrogant Frenchman, and Duke vowed revenge.

For a while, Duke forgot about Eiji, and went on with his own life, eventually finding a girlfriend. But Duke turned back to fighting when he entered the Toshindaibukai tournament hosted by the Himitsu Kessha. To his horror, he came face to face with Eiji once again, and once again he lost pathetically, intensifying his hatred toward the Japanese adventurer. Ashamed, Duke decided to retire from fighting.

But Duke entered the second Toshindaibukai after hearing that his girlfriend had betrayed him and become the new Uranus of the Himitsu Kessha. Driven by hatred, Duke entered the tournament, and this time, found himself fighting with Eiji to find Uranus. But when Duke heard that Uranus had already been slain by a man named Sho Shinjo, Duke abandoned the battlefield.

When the third Toshindaibukai was announced, Duke entered solely to not only fight Eiji once again, but to also help himself and his fellow fighters out, due to the fact that he was targeted by the Soshiki to be a blood sacrifice for the fallen fighting god, Agon Teos. During the tournament, Duke was stopped by a rival knight named Balga, who had a score to settle with him. Balga was from a Norwergian clan of royal knights and his family were known to be sworn enemies of the Rambert clan. However, Duke managed to kill Balga in combat.

After hearing that Eiji had slain the leader of the Soshiki, Duke retired from fighting for good, and settled down as a rich nobleman in France. Duke also took in and trained an English boy named Lancelot Lakeknight as his apprentice for the fourth Toshindabukai.

[edit] Eiji Shinjo

  • Nationality: Japanese
  • Occupation: Adventurer
  • Blood Type: A
  • Age: 23 (at the time of Battle Arena Toshinden 3)
  • Height: 175 cm
  • Weight: 63 kg
  • Weapon: Byakko sword (translated as the White Tiger sword)

Eiji and his best friend and rival, Kayin Amoh, were both trained from a very young age in the ways of the sword by Eiji's older brother Sho Shinjo. One day, however, Sho simply vanished, leaving Eiji and Kayin behind. As Eiji's skills grew, so did his desire to find his lost brother, and before long Eiji left in search of Sho. Along Eiji's travels, he fought and defeated a man by the name of Duke B. Rambert. Unknown to both of them, they would meet again many times over. Eventually, word reached Eiji of a tournament known as the Toushindaibukai, which was to include the best warriors the from across the globe, Duke and Eiji's old rival Kayin Amoh among them. Eiji enters the tournament in hopes of finding his brother Sho there. After defeating opponent after opponent, Eiji eventually faced Gaia, who was holding the tournament illegally. The rightful holders of the tournament, however, intervened, denying Eiji victory.

Eiji then entered the second tournament, believing that his brother would be there. But Sho had killed Uranus and Master and left before he had a chance to talk to him.

In the 3rd tournament, Eiji had been selected to be a blood sacrifice for Agon Teos. Eiji and the other warriors confronted the Soshiki led by Abel and his assassins. Eiji first fought against Leon, a pirate who wanted to prove himself that he was the toughest in the world. However, Eiji killed him.

After that, he fought and seemingly killed Vermilion. Eiji then found his long lost brother and proceeded to face him in battle. After a long duel, Eiji defeated him. He then made his way to the throne room of the Soshiki and killed the leader Abel. It wasn't over however, since Veil, the former leader of the Soshiki who had been imprisoned by Abel, had broken free and wanted to have revenge. Eiji defeated him too after a long and bloody fight.

Afterwards, Eiji taught Sho's son Subaru the way of the sword, and eventually passed down his Byakko katana to him.

Eiji was then offered to become the leader of a new evil Organization called the Gerard Foundation. Eiji accepted, hoping to dismantle it from within. With the help of the altered humans Eos and Zero, he participated in the fourth Toshindabukai to gather the 4 Sacred Arms before anyone else did.

In the fourth Toshindabukai, Subaru met Eiji again and challenged him to a battle so that he could test his skills. Eiji, despite now having a cold exterior, was very proud of his nephew for becoming strong, but before they could fully reunite, Vermilion showed up once more. This time, however, Eiji defeated and killed him.

[edit] Ellis

  • Nationality: Japanese
  • Age: 18 (at the time of Battle Arena Toshinden 3)
  • Height: 160 cm
  • Weight: 47 kg
  • Blood Type: O
  • Occupation: Circus dancer
  • Weapon: Twin dirks

A close friend of Eiji Shinjo and Kayin Amoh, Ellis is a fighter skilled in the art of the twin dirk daggers, and is also a circus performer. She was raised in an orphanage in Turkey, told that her parents and brother had been killed in a car crash. Ellis, after reaching the age of 16, moved to Japan where she would meet and eventually develop an unreturned crush on Eiji, who was bitter at the sudden disappearance of his brother and mentor, Sho.

Along with Eiji and his friend Kayin, Ellis entered the first Toshindaibukai in order to test her fighting skills, but she, along with all the other participating fighters, discovered that the tournament had been held illegally by a man named Gaia, whom Eiji had been battling at the time. Furious at Gaia for deceiving her, Ellis returned home with Eiji and Kayin.

However, two years later, Ellis received a letter from Gaia, who was calling for help. To her horror, the letter revealed that Gaia was actually her father and that she and Gaia were the only ones to survive the car crash sixteen years ago. It also revealed that Ellis was actually Japanese and not Turkish. It seemed that Gaia had been targeted for death by the Himitsu Kessha Organization for holding the first Toshindaibukai, and now needed help if he was to avenge the deaths of his wife and son, who had been killed when Uranus caused the fatal car accident.

Fighting her hatred, Ellis entered the second Toshindaibukai and encountered a man named Rungo Iron, who claimed to be a friend of Gaia's who had also received a call for help. Eventually reuniting with her father, Ellis fought in the tournament, but was knocked out by a Chinese Magician named Fo Fai, leaving Gaia and Rungo to fight along with their new ally: Eiji.

Ellis eventually heard that Uranus had been slain before Gaia and Rungo could reach her, and Gaia came home to Ellis, to start a new life together.

However, Ellis, Gaia, and Rungo were selected by the Soshiki as blood sacrifices for Agon Teos, and they were hunted down by several of Abel's assassins. Along with Eiji and Kayin, they entered the third Toshindaibukai. Rungo had to fight Adam, a robot about his own size and Gaia had been targeted by Tau, a tribal giant. Ellis was encountered by another assassin named Atahua, a tribal boy. Ellis fought Atahua with all her might, but when Tau showed up and claimed that he had forfeited his match against Gaia, Atahua abandoned his fight with Ellis, understanding now that fighting was pointless. Ellis and Gaia bid farewell to Tau and Atahua, and left the tournament.

Since then, Ellis and Gaia have not fought again, retiring from the sport for good.

[edit] Fo Fai

  • Nationality: Chinese
  • Age: 107 (at the time of Battle Arena Toshinden 2)
  • Height: 5 ft
  • Weight: 106 lbs
  • Blood Type: O
  • Occupation: Magician/assassin
  • Weapon: Iron claws

Fo Fai is an ancient but powerful Chinese magician who uses his iron claws as his primary weapons. Although he may not look it, Fo is a sadistic killer who's heart is as black as the night itself, and he takes the ultimate pleasure in the suffering and killing of others, especially young people such as Eiji, Kayin, and Ellis.

For reasons unknown, Fo and his fellow assassin Mondo entered the first two Toshindaibukai tournaments hosted by the Himitsu Kessha Organization. Fo was knocked out by Kayin Amoh, and Mondo was knocked out by Eiji Shinjo.

After the events of Battle Arena Toshinden 2, Fo had decided to investigate the rumors of a mysterious ape-like man that was living in the secluded mountains of China. Upon further investigation, Fo had discovered that the ape-like man was real, named Bayhou and that it sought seclusion from his existence. Sensing great potential from Bayhou, Fo had decided to give his iron claws to Bayhou so that he could teach him a couple of his trademark moves. After realizing that Bayhou had successfully copied his fighting style, Fo had decided to do one last test to see if Bayhou was truly worthy of being his successor. Upon turning his back away from Bayhou, Fo had looked at the blue skies and knew instantly that his time on Earth was drawing to an end. Also, Fo knew that with his back turned, Bayhou could easily attack him unexpectedly and that he would have no chance of fighting back. With an unexpected second, Bayhou attacked Fo and made a painful slash across his back, causing Fo to scream in agonizing pain as he felt the pre-meditated attack in an instant. Knowing that he would be dead soon, Fo made one last smile on his face during his descent to the ground as he realized that Bayhou would be a great practitioner of his iron claws and fighting style.

Fo still appears in Toshinden 3 as an extra outfit for Bayhou. He appears as an undead zombie with a bloody claw mark on his back.

[edit] Gaia

  • Nationality: Japanese
  • Age: 41 (at the time of Battle Arena Toshinden 3)
  • Height: 241 cm
  • Weight: 91 kg
  • Blood Type: O
  • Occupation: Expert swordsman
  • Weapon: Large broadsword

Gaia and his wife Kaede were both part of the Himitsu Kesshu organization that sponsored the Toshindaibukai tournaments. His wife was at that time the Uranus of the organization, making up part of the "Divine Four" (the four highest positions in the organization under the leader). Gaia himself was practically a member, but the one who would become the next Uranus thought it too dangerous to have them both in the Divine Four. Gaia, Kaede, their unnamed son, and their daughter Ellis were driving in the family vehicle when it spun out of control and exploded. Gaia and Ellis miraculously survived, but Kaede and their son were not as lucky.

Gaia knew it had been no accident, and he left Ellis in the care of an orphanage in Turkey so he could pursue his family's assailiant without any hindrance. Gaia was promoted into the Divine Four, and he eventually learned that the woman who had become Uranus in Kaede's stead had masterminded what had happened. Filled with hatred for Uranus, Gaia illegally held the Toshindaibukai in search of strong warriors to aid him in his attack against her. Gaia met Eiji Shinjo at the tournament while searching for his older brother Sho Shinjo. Gaia announced his proposition to Eiji, but before Eiji could accept or refuse, Chaos, another member of the Divine Four, intervened and stopped the fight. Chaos told Gaia that he had been labelled as a traitor and marked for death. Gaia knew he had no other choice but to flee, for if Chaos had found him, Uranus couldn't be far behind, and he could not take her down on his own.

One year later, while still on the run, Gaia received an invitation to participate in the upcoming second Toshindaibukai tournament. Gaia realized that he could run all he wanted, but Uranus had an easier time finding him than she did breathing. He cast off his armour, and holding back nothing, fought against Uranus with everything he had and this time, he was fighting on Eiji's side. Gaia fought his way to the organization's headquarters, meeting up with his daughter Ellis there. After telling her his true story, he went further into the tower and fought with Chaos. The fight ended in a draw, and after Gaia discovered that Uranus and Master had already been killed by someone else (Sho Shinjo), he walked out of the tower, half-fulfilled, half-revenge starved.

Upon learning that himself, his daughter, and the rest of his friends were targeted to be blood sacrifices for Agon Teos, Gaia had decided to enter into the third Toshindaibukai in order to stop Abel and his evil plan to bring back Agon Teos. While his daughter had fought against a tribal boy named Atahua, Gaia had found himself fighting against a tribal giant named Tau. After a fierce fight, Gaia was surprised to see that Tau had forfeited the match to him and that Atahua had done the same thing for Ellis. In the end, Gaia and the rest of the Toshin fighters were successful in defeating the Soshiki, thus stopping their evil plan to bring back Agon Teos to the Earth.

Since then, Gaia has gone back home to be with Ellis and the two of them have retired from the sport of fighting.

  • Weight: 58 kg
  • Blood Type: O
  • Occupation: Killer
  • Weapon: Chainsaw

With help from the Soshiki's leader, Abel, Judgement heads to the third Toshindaibukai in hopes of finding more victims for his senseless rampage, but instead, he encounters his old friend David. Forgetting about the entire past between him and David, Judgement tries to attack and kill David with his chainsaw, but David, who has emotional regret in his heart, is forced to fight back and kill Judgement without any hesitation.

[edit] Kayin Amoh

  • Nationality: Scottish
  • Age: 24 (at the time of Battle Arena Toshinden 3)
  • Height: 178 cm
  • Weight: 64 kg
  • Blood Type: AB
  • Occupation: Bounty hunter
  • Weapon: Caliburn Saber; legendary sword (also known as Excalibur)

Kayin Amoh is the best friend of main protagonist Eiji Shinjo. Kayin is described as a bounty hunter, though his country of origin has changed a few times. He is described initially as Scottish, later English. At a young age, his father was killed by the underworld assassin, Tempest. When Tempest discovered he had slain a father, he took Kayin in to atone for it. However, Tempest met and was killed in the finals of the tournament prior to the first game by Sho Shinjo. Kayin then took up his adoptive father's mantle as a bounty hunter, going by the codename of Storm.

Kayin was trained along with Eiji by Eiji's brother Sho Shinjo, until Sho disappeared one day. Since then, Eiji and Kayin have continued to be the best of friends, but also rivals. This friendship was nearly shattered when Kayin heard of his father's murder at the hands of Sho.

For a while, Kayin left Eiji and went his separate ways, but they met again at the second Toshindaibukai when Kayin was forced into participation after his adoptive daughter, Naru, was kidnapped by the Himitsu Kessha. Naru was the daughter of one of Kayin's past targets and he raised her through the guilt of killing her own father. Kayin was defeated by Eiji, and so he never got to face off against his sworn enemy, Sho.

Within time, Kayin had learned that he was a target of a new organization called the Soshiki and that his life and Naru's was in danger once more. Participating in the third Toshindaibukai with Eiji and the rest of his friends, Kayin had fought against and killed a Soshiki assassin named Ten Count while assisting Eiji in getting to the leader of the Soshiki, known as Abel. Though Kayin was happy to learn that the Soshiki was defeated, he realized that Naru would always be in danger because of him and through this theory, Kayin had decided to leave Naru in an orphanage, but not before giving her his Excalibur sword. Afterwards, Kayin disappeared and was never heard from again.

It is unknown to what happened to Kayin afterwards, but his lack of participation in the 4th game and appearance as a glowing ball of light to his daughter suggests that he is deceased.

  • Height: 176 cm
  • Weight: 64 kg

One day, Leon had encountered a Japanese travelling swordsman named Eiji Shinjo and thought for sure that he would be no match against his cunning sword skills. However, Leon was shocked to see that Eiji had easily bested him in combat. Furious, Leon swore to seek revenge against Eiji for his humiliating defeat. Then from out of nowhere, Abel appeared and told Leon that he could make him strong enough to beat Eiji if he was to help the Soshiki Organization bring back the fallen fighting god, Agon Teos. Leon agreed and began training relentlessly so that he could learn how to copy and mimic each of Eiji's own moves. When the third Toshindaibukai had arrived, Leon had challenged Eiji to a rematch and fought against his adversary by using his new techniques. However, Leon's obsession for revenge and the desire to be the best swordsman had blinded him so easily and through this folly Leon was slain by Eiji at the end of the match.

[edit] Master

  • Nationality: Unknown, but some consider Master to be Belgian
  • Age: 16
  • Height: 151 cm
  • Weight: 39 kg
  • Blood Type: AB
  • Occupation: Leader of the Himitsu Kessha
  • Weapon: Psychic sword

Solely known as "Master" or "The Master", little is known about this mysterious but extremely powerful boy, except that he is the superior of the ruthless Himitsu Kessha Organization. Until his defeat, Master had many bodyguards, the most notable ones being Uranus, Gaia, Chaos, and Cupido. But after Uranus killed Gaia's wife and son in a car crash, Gaia betrayed the Organization and illegally held the first Toshindaibukai. Uranus sent Chaos to track Gaia down and kill him. Gaia fled for his life just after Chaos found him.

Master then held the second Toshindaibukai in order to draw Gaia out into the open, using Uranus as bait. But meanwhile, another matter caused Master's downfall, as he and Uranus were slain in their own headquarters by Sho himself.

Master only appears in Battle Arena Toshinden 2, but he is still the Head of the Himitsu Kessha on the first game.

[edit] Miss Til

  • Nationality: Malaysian
  • Age: 26
  • Blood Type: AB
  • Height: 171 cm
  • Weight: 48 kg
  • Occupation: Fortune teller
  • Weapon: Flute

Miss Til is a fortune teller who serves under Abel in the Soshiki Organization as his third-in-command. Also, as Abel's personal fortune teller, Miss Til has been there to give him advice and strategies about his plans so that he can execute them with no problem. As a fighter, Miss Til is very ruthless and doesn't hesitate to eliminate any threat that goes against the Soshiki.

In a closed meeting one day, Abel tells his three commanders (Vermilion, Miss Til, Schultz) about his plan to bring Agon Teos to the Earth and he entrusts all three of them to initiate the plan with no setbacks or problems. While Schultz was in charge of the ritual ceremony and Vermilion was in charge of gathering the assassins, Miss Til was in charge of gathering the past files of the Toshin fighters so that she could show them to Abel and the two of them could determine the strengths and weaknesses of each fighter.

At the third Toshindaibukai tournament, Miss Til had decided to participate in the event in order to give Abel the time needed for the ritual ceremony. Within time, Miss Til had ran into Shizuku Fuji: a woman who was protecting the potential vessel for Agon Teos, known only as David. Determined to fulfill her master's desire, Miss Til had fought against Shizuku with her strength and power, but in the end it proved to be futile as Shizuku was successful in slaying Miss Til. Ironically, Miss Til had secretly foreseen her own death prior to the tournament and realized that she would inevitably die before the conclusion of the event.

[edit] Mondo

  • Nationality: Japanese
  • Age: 44 (at the time of Battle Arena Toshinden 3)
  • Height: 179 cm
  • Weight: 66 kg
  • Occupation: Ninja warrior
  • Blood Type: AB
  • Weapon: Seiryu spear; (translated as the Azure Dragon spear)

A spy from a feared yet revered Japanese warrior clan, Mondo entered the first Toshindaibukai in order to collect information about the Himitsu Kessha for his client. Even though he was defeated during the tournament, he had gathered enough information on them.

Just as his client was about to attack the Himitsu Kessha, Mondo received an invitation to the second Battle Arena Toshinden. As a way to retaliate, his client tried to hold Mondo back, telling him to discard the invitation. Mondo ignored the restraint and headed for the tournament without consent of his client. Although he lost, the Himitsu Kessha fell right after the conclusion of the second Toshindabukai.

Unknown to Mondo however, he had been selected by Abel to be a blood sacrifice for Agon Teos: a dark fighting god. When he learned of this, Mondo entered into the third tournament and killed Toujin, one of the Soshiki's assassins.

After that however, Eiji became the head of the Gerard Foundation and when he learned about the power of the 4 Sacred Arms, he decided to find Mondo, since he carried the lance of Seiryu. Mondo was also targeted by a Chinese magician called Genma, who also sought the power of the 4 Sacred Arms. Mondo sought refuge with Fen Barefoot, but was forced to flee again after Genma found his location and killed Fen's grandfather, which prompted Fen himself to enter into the fourth tournament (This explains the fact of how Mondo trained Fen for the upcoming tournament).

It is assumed that Eiji got to Mondo first, since Eos (one of Eiji's fighters) fought with his spear in the fourth Toshindabukai.

Strong but silent, Nagisa is also a part-time member of Interpol, serving on most of their high-profile cases.

One day, Nagisa's supervisors inform him that a shrouded group known only as the Soshiki is engaging in suspicious activity and they assign him to the case. At the same time, Nagisa is also paired up with a New York police officer named Tracy, who doesn't exactly get along with Nagisa during the first step of their investigation. Though the two argue during the events of the third Toshindaibukai, both Nagisa and Tracy put aside their differences to work together in order to stop Abel and his loyal followers from carrying out their nefarious plans.

In the end, Nagisa is successful in helping Eiji Shinjo and the others destroy the Soshiki and he is given high commendations and rewards by both Interpol and Tokyo PD. Still continuing his job as a police detective, Nagisa is always ready to put those who commit crime behind bars.

Within time, Rachael had discovered that she had a twin sister named Tracy who was living a decent life, causing hatred to build up from within Rachael's heart.

Within time, Rachael's street fighting had gotten the attention of a man named Abel, who saw the ferocity coming from within her. He told Rachael that she could get her revenge against Tracy if she was to work for him as an asssassin of the Soshiki Organization. Without any second thought, Rachael accepted Abel's offer and began training herself in order to learn all of her sister's moves and techniques. When the third Toshindaibukai had begun, Rachael confronted Tracy from within their match and told her that she hated her due to the fact that she was put through a living nightmare while Tracy was given a decent life. Though she realized that Rachael had wanted to kill her, Tracy could never bring herself to do the same thing to her own sister and she spared her life. As Rachael looked on in shock, Tracy explained to her that she wanted nothing more than to restore their bond and she offered Rachael a chance to come back with her to New York, but Rachael refused the offer and walked away from Tracy, never to be seen again.

It is unknown to what happened to Rachael afterwards, but it's likely that she moved to a different city to continue her work as a mercenary.

After dicovering a uranium deposit from within a secret shaft of the mine, Rungo's family was kidnapped by the Himitsu Kessha. Rungo then decided to enter the Toshindaibukai fighting tournament hosted by this mysterious organization. He managed to get a glimpse of the tournament host, and although he couldn't see who it was behind his thick red armour, Rungo recognized the man's voice as that of his own friend, Gaia. Determined to get Gaia out of the Himitsu Kessha, Rungo fought as hard as he could, but was knocked out of the tournament by a Frenchman named Duke B. Rambert. Despite this, Rungo was successful in rescuing his wife and son from the organization.

Two years later, Rungo received a call for help from Gaia. It turned out Gaia had hosted the tournament illegally, and was now being targeted by the Himitsu Kessha. Gaia begged his old friend for help to fight against his assassin, Chaos, and to get revenge against Uranus, who had killed his wife and son by causing a car crash. Rungo, determined to help Gaia, entered the second Toshindaibukai and fought alongside Gaia, until they were separated. Although Rungo heard that Gaia had fought Chaos to a draw, he also heard that Uranus had been slain by someone else. Satisfied, Rungo returned home.

It wasn't the end however, since Rungo was selected to be a blood sacrifice for Agon Teos by the Soshiki, another organization. Rungo met up with Gaia and together, they fought against their assassins. Gaia confronted Tau, while Rungo took on the robot Adam. Rungo defeated Adam by turning him into a pile of scrap, but while Gaia and Tau dueled, Tau realized that he couldn't win, and forfeited the match.

After that, Rungo and Gaia retired from fighting.

  • Blood Type: A
  • Occupation: Ritual practitioner
  • Weapon: Scythe

Little is known about Schultz's past, except that he is one of Abel's earliest and most loyal followers and is willing to fight to the death for his sire. Like Abel, Schultz is also an avid worshipper of Agon Teos and is determined to bring back the fighting god under the orders of Abel himself.

Schultz told Abel that the prophecy of Agon Teos' ritual states that the body of a pure hearted person can hold the immense power of Agon Teos and the blood sacrifices of the strongest warriors would be needed in order to bring Agon Teos back into the Earth. Upon learning of this, Abel had decided to host the third Toshindaibukai (right after the fall of the Himitsu Kessha Organization) so that he could hire assassins to copy and mimic the Toshin fighters' unique styles. Schultz was given the job of being the ritual practitioner so that he could initiate the ceremony at the right moment. Unfortunantly for Schultz, he never got the chance to perform the ceremony, for he was killed by Chaos (a former member of the Himitsu Kessha) during the events of Toshinden 3.

[edit] Sho Shinjo

  • Blood Type: A
  • Occupation: Travelling swordmaster
  • Weapon: Katana

One day, however, Sho vanished without any trace, leaving Eiji and Kayin, as he felt they had reached an adequate level of swordsmanship and could train without him. He travelled the world over, taking the name "The Stranger", searching out and defeating all those who were even rumored to have any potential. Word reached Sho that Eiji had entered the Toshindaibukai, a tournament that was to be held for the strongest in the world. He watched his brother from afar and saw him facing Gaia in the finals.

During this tournament, Sho met and fought with Cupido, a woman from the Himitsu Kessha and Master's right hand. They fell in love.

Sho entered the second tournament for the same reasons he did the first, to see if his brother had gotten stronger. During this tournament, he encountered Vermilion and defeated him, causing the black warrior to flee. Sho didn't care about his motives, for he had only one thing in mind: making Master and Uranus pay for making clones of him. He broke into the organization's main compound and killed Uranus and Master. He then walked out of the building just as Gaia arrived.

In the third game, Sho finally faced Eiji, and his brother managed not only to defeat him, but bring down the Soshiki as well. Impressed, Sho decided to leave his son Subaru with Eiji. He asked Eiji if he could take care of him and train him the same way he had trained Eiji. Eiji accepted, and Sho continued to wander around the world looking to get stronger.

Upon her travels, Shizuku had found and rescued an injured teenage boy named David soon after he had escaped from an orphanage ran by an organization known as the Soshiki. Upon learning that David was to be the reluctant vessel for an evil fighting god known as Agon Teos, Shizuku had decided to enter the third Toshindaibukai tournament in order to protect David (who had also chosen to enter). After fighting alongside with David and the rest of the Toshin fighters, Shizuku encountered a Soshiki member who fought in a similar style to her own; a Malaysian fortune teller named Miss Til. As the third-in-command of the Soshiki (behind Vermilion but ahead of Schultz), Miss Til proved to be one of the fiercest fighters that Shizuku had ever fought. In the end, however, Shizuku killed Miss Til in combat and upon learning that the Soshiki's evil plan had fallen apart, Shizuku was satisfied and returned back home with David by her side.

When Sofia learned that another fighter was suffering from the same fate as her, (Chaos), she entered the second Toshindabukai in hopes of saving them. Although she was unsuccessful in her mission, the Himitsu Kessha had fallen, giving Sofia some relief and comfort.

Sofia entered the third tournament when she heard that she had been targeted by another organization called the Soshiki. • Blood: AB
  • Height: 211 cm
  • Weight: 89 kg
  • Occupation: Tribesman
  • Weapon: Large broadsword

After the death of Atahua's parents, Tau had taken him in and became his adoptive father. Teaching Atahua how to fight and defend himself in combat, Tau was determined to make sure that Atahua could learn how to battle at any given time so that he could learn his true strength and potential. Besides that, Tau was also determined to help Atahua restore their tribe's empire, which had fallen many centuries ago. Though he knows that restoring the empire could never happen, Tau was always determined to make sure that Atahua was satisfied from within his own attempts. One day, Atahua had came to Tau and told him that a man named Abel had promised him the restoration of their tribe's empire if they were to participate in the third Toshindaibukai as assassins of the Soshiki and eliminate a couple of specific fighters. While Tau was skeptic about what Abel was really up to, he decided to go along with Atahua to the Toshindaibukai in order to see what was happening.

At the tournament, Tau had found himself battling against his specific target, who happened to be Gaia (a former member of the Himitsu Kessha Organization). During the fight, Tau had realized that Gaia wasn't fighting for just survival, but also to protect his own daughter Ellis (who was fighting against Atahua during the time of the match). Realizing that he could never win against Gaia, Tau had forfeited his match to Gaia and left the tournament along with Atahua (who forfeited his match to Ellis as well). Now back in South America, Tau seeks to continue his life with Atahua while being in one with nature itself.

  • Nationality: English
  • Age: 29
  • Blood Type: AB
  • Height: 180 cm
  • Weight: 60 kg
  • Occupation: Aristocrat assassin
  • Weapon: Rapier

Through this method, Ten Count literally counts down from ten when fighting an opponent and upon saying zero at the end, Ten Count unleashes his most deadly moves against his opponent, almost always leaving them dead while he looks on with a cold smile on his face.

During the third Toshindaibukai, Ten Count is given orders by Abel to eliminate his specific target, Kayin Amoh. During their match against one another, Ten Count displayed his surprising tactics and cunning speed against Kayin. Unfortunately for Ten Count, his strength was nowhere near Kayin's own and Kayin himself killed Ten Count with his Rainbow Splash attack.

Ten Count's character design is inspired by Michael Jackson during the time of which he was making the Smooth Criminal music video.

  • Nationality: Japanese
  • Age: 62
  • Blood Type: AB
  • Height: 178 cm
  • Weight: 63 kg
  • Occupation: Assassin
  • Weapon: Partisan and fire cannon

However, he was approached by Abel one day, who told him that his organization could help save his wife, that is if he was to be an assassin for the Soshiki and eliminate a specific fighter that was to appear in the third Toshindaibukai. Realizing he had no other choice, Toujin had reluctantly agreed with Abel on the plan and came out of retirement in hopes of saving his wife. When Toujin learned that his specific target was a Japanese ninja warrior named Mondo, he held nothing back against his enemy and tried with all of his might to defeat him, but Mondo proved to be the stronger warrior and in the end, Toujin was slain by Mondo.

  • Age: 22 (at the time of Battle Arena Toshinden 3)
  • Blood type: B
  • Height: 164 cm
  • Weight: 48 kg
  • Occupation: Police officer
  • Weapon: Twin tonfas

Tracy is a feisty American policewoman, who is often teamed up with fellow policeman Nagisa Iwashiro, who is only present in Battle Arena Toshinden 3.

Hearing about the death of a woman and a young boy in a car crash, Tracy entered into the second Toshindaibukai to investigate the activities of the Himitsu Kessha Organization, as the woman's husband, a man named Gaia, had been working for the Organization at the time. Tracy, being a skilled fighter, was narrowly defeated by a Japanese swordsman named Eiji Shinjo, but she eventually found the answers she needed: The now-dead Uranus was the one responsible for the deaths of Gaia's wife and son. Tracy returned to New York and reported to her superiors, but there was one thing that she couldn't get over: She was known as the most skilled fighter on the NYPD.

After the announcement of the third Toshindaibukai, Tracy entered once again (not because of the thrill, but rather because of a new investigation and upon learning that she was targeted by the Soshiki to being a blood sacrifice for Agon Teos). At first she just couldn't get along with her new boss and partner Nagisa Iwashiro - everything he did grated on her nerves. But as they fought side by side against Abel and his cohorts, Tracy's feelings changed as she noticed Nagisa's strong sense of justice. Finally, he won her whole-hearted respect.

Eventually Tracy was confronted by a Soshiki assassin named Rachael, who was Tracy's older twin sister. Abandoned by her parents and left to fend for herself in a harsh, cruel world, Rachael cursed her fate and learned to hate Tracy, but Tracy still defeated her. In the end, Tracy begged for Rachael to forget the past and start all over with her, but Rachael refused this request and left, never to be seen again.

As she left to return to New York, Tracy couldn't help teasing her serious superior a little; "Hey, Nagisa! You should quit worrying about your girly first name, you know. Haven't you heard - sensitive new age guys are all the rage now!"

Rambert. After Gaia's wife left the post of Uranus from the Himitsu Kessha, she stepped in and became the new Uranus, and even changed from a kind, warm-hearted person to a cold-blooded assassin. Among her murder victims were Gaia's wife and son. While Duke was driven by love-turned-hatred to kill his former girlfriend, Gaia was driven by his lust for revenge.

Eventually Uranus would be killed in the second tournament, along with Master by Sho Shinjo.

Uranus is only present on Battle Arena Toshinden 2, but she is still the Deputy Head on the first game.

  • Weapon: Laser blades

Veil was once the leader of the Soshiki, but when he failed to summon Agon Teos, he was imprisoned by Abel, one of his soldiers.

He managed to break free during the third tournament, however, and decided to face Abel and exact his revenge. But before he could face him, Eiji had killed Abel. Enraged, Veil attacked Eiji, and after a fierce fight, was defeated and killed.

Veil has the same voice as Abel, and they share the same fighting style, possibly indicating that they may be personally connected in some way.

[edit] Vermilion

  • Nationality: Unknown
  • Age: Unknown
  • Height: Unknown
  • Weight: Unknown
  • Blood Type: Unknown
  • Occupation: Gun expert
  • Weapon: Shotgun and revolver

Vermilion is a mysterious gun expert whose past and history is unknown to many. He first appeared at the second Toshindaibukai, hiding in the shadows while watching the participants battle against one another. He tried to wait out the tournament, but was found and confronted by Sho Shinjo. He managed to escape after realizing he had no hope of victory against Sho. In the third Toshindaibukai, Vermilion made his presence known almost immediately. He entered the fray, taking out several opponents but failing against and escaping from Eiji Shinjo. When Eiji and Sho battle for what is to be the last time at the end of the Toshindaibukai, he watched from afar, studying them both. He stopped watching the fight prematurely, for he had seen enough to prepare for the 4th Toshindaibukai.

10 years after the last Toshindaibukai tournament, a fourth one was called to gather the four holy weapons. It was said that whoever possessed these four would have supreme and omnipotent power. Vermilion, however, knew their secret: When the four weapons were gathered, the world would come to an end. Eiji Shinjo, the new head of the organization, knew all too well of Vermilion's search for these weapons and specifically invited him to the tournament so that Eiji could kill him. Vermilion appeared at the tournament and quickly eliminated all of the weaker participants. Eventually it came down to himself and Eiji Shinjo; Vermilion fought to destroy the world, Eiji fought for the world. It was not revealed who won this fight, although Eiji seems like the more likely candidate for victory.

[edit] Zola

  • Nationality: Austrian
  • Age: 24
  • Height: 174 cm
  • Weight: 52 kg
  • Blood Type: O
  • Occupation: Opera singer/assassin
  • Weapon: Whip

Zola is a well-renowed Austrian opera singer who doubles as an assassin for the Soshiki Organization. While most people see Zola as a beautiful singer, others see her for what she really is; a mistress of evil who uses her charm, beauty and kinky, cat-like behaviour to distract and surprise her targets, enabling her to kill them with her razor-sharp whip. Very few can match against Zola in terms of combat and she's considered to be the one of the most dangerous assassins of the Soshiki.

Under orders from Abel himself, Zola headed to the third Toshindaibukai in hopes of eliminating her specific target and long-time rival, the Russian private detective Sofia. The two ladies battled against each other with their speed, agility, and sharp whip-wielding techniques. Though Zola is considered to be the fastest whip-wielder of the Soshiki, her ability was no match against Sofia's own and Sofia eventually slayed Zola with the use of her Salamander attack.

Zola's character design is inspired by Catwoman of the Batman franchise.
