Area 88 (エリア88 Eria Hachi-Jū-Hachi?) is a Japanese manga series by Kaoru Shintani that has been animated as an OVA and a television series in Japan.

Hearing rumors of mercenary fighters fighting for the Asranian military, journalist Makoto Shinjo gets dispatched to Area 88 to cover the story as an embedded reporter by the Asranian armed forces. He later meets with Shin and his intrigued of his status as the only Japanese national to fight in Asran.

Boris, an ex-British Air Force, suffers from PTSD as he's the only pilot to survive every mission when he engages anti-government forces. Shin and some of the other pilots team up with Boris to taken on an enemy facility before Boris gets killed after his F-8 Crusader gets shot down.

When Area 88 gets under attack by a lone anti-personnel sniper, Saki gets forced not to launch any jets as the runway is under the unknown sniper's line of fire. Makoto assists Saki and the other pilots by using his camera to spot the sniper's location.

After being hinted by Makoto that Satoru plans to get married to Ryoko, Shin decides to leave Area 88 with a heavily armed Northrop F-5 to seek asylum in another country. However, Saki orders the rest of Area 88's mercenary fighters to go after him. Shin realizes that he can't escape his supposed fate despite being near the end of his tour of duty and decides to end his attempts to escape. Meanwhile, Makoto heads back to Japan and gives a photo of Shin's Northrop F-5 to prove that he's alive. Ryoko runs away from the wedding ceremony, ending the planned marriage for good.
