[edit] Primary highways

These are the main highways in Alberta. They are numbered from 1 to 100, with the exception of the loop routes around Calgary and Edmonton which are numbered in the 200s. Highways 1, 2, 3, 4, 16 and 43 are the most important highways and are divided highways or freeways for much or all of their length. Speed limits are generally 100 km/h (65 mph) except on some divided highways and freeways which are 110 km/h (70 mph).

Highway 216 Anthony Henday Drive A long term project to circle Edmonton. As of the end of 2007, the highway is about 70% completed, starting from the northwest side of Edmonton from 137 Avenue and circling southbound as it crosses Yellowhead Highway 16, circles east at Terwillegar Drive, crosses Highway 2, circles north at Highway 14 and crosses the Sherwood Park Freeway until terminating at the Yellowhead Highway 16 east of the city. The northwest leg from Yellowhead Highway 16 in the western part of the city to Highway 15 (Manning Drive) in the northeast has been approved and will likely be completed by 2011. The final stretch from Manning Drive to Yellowhead Highway 16 east of the city is currently in the planning stages.

[edit] Secondary highways

Highways 500 to 699 are east–west roads; higher numbered roads are in the north. Highways 700 to 899 are north–south roads; higher numbered roads are in the east. 900-series highways are newer routes that have been established as potential corridors for Primary highways. Some of these highways have gravel sections. Speed limits range from 80 km/h (50 mph) to 100 km/h (65 mph). Another difference from the Primary highways are that the secondary highways are funded, upgraded and maintained by the counties and municipal districts instead of the province.
