List of AAFC Subjects

This is a list of Australian Air Force Cadets subjects by training phase, as well as general information about AAFC subjects.

[edit] Subject Codes

The AAFC utilises a three-letter coding system for all cadet subjects. The first two letter indicate the subject (e.g. FC=Fieldcraft, SK-Service Knowledge, AV=Aviation) and the last letter indicates the stage:

  • R-Recruit
  • B-Basic
  • P-Proficiency
  • A-Advanced
  • E-Elective (note that the subjects FSA and MCA are electives not advanced stage subjects, nor were they ever advanced stage subjects)
  • J-JNCO Course
  • S-SNCO Course
  • W-CWOFF Course
  • O-CUO Course

[edit] Instructional Periods

The AAFC Manual of Ground Training (MoGT) provides for period lengths of 40 minutes for home training and 50 minutes for promotion courses. Breaks between home training periods are required so instructors can set up for the next lesson if necessary. A 10-minute break normally exists between periods on promotion courses to provide for transit and/or rest breaks. This conveniently allows the day to be broken into hour-long instructional intervals. On other courses where formal or informal instruction takes place (e.g. theory on an aeromodelling camp or informal presentations on a GST) the period length is at the discretion of directing staff in accordance with local conditions and content requirements. In these cases cadets must be provided with the opportunity for a break at least every two hours.

[edit] Common and Uncommon Subjects

Subjects common to many stages appear many times, whilst most elective subject codes appear only once. The only compulsory subject which is exclusive to a single stage is TTR. Previously, PDB fell into this category, but it is now an elective PDE. The next closest subject to being exclusive is APO, but a similar subject APE is available (these are similar but not identical). Organisation and Administration only appears on SNCO and CUO courses.

Drill and Ceremonial is the only subject which is a home training compulsory subject, a home training elective subject and a promotion course subject. In fact, it appears in all stages/courses of training (except Qualified, which consists only of elective). Fieldcraft also appears in all courses, although there is no Fieldcraft Elective specifically. However, there are many Field-related electives (ADE, BPE, FOE, RCE and VTE - see below). Service Knowledge is the next most common subject, appearing in all stages except Proficiency, SNCO and elective.

Many home training and promotion course subjects are exclusive to those categories (e.g. AV, AR and SV can only be done at home SQN whilst IT, LD, OA, PT and PA are exclusive to promotion courses).

Promotion courses offer no elective subjects.

[edit] Recruit/Induction

As of 2007, the AAFC is removing the Induction stage of training and replacing it with a Recruit Course. This list contains the old subjects followed by the new Recruit training subjects.

  • Service Knowledge Induction (SKI)
  • Drill and Ceremonial Induction (DCI)
  • Fieldcraft Induction (FCI)
  • Teambuilding Induction (TTI)
  • Aviation Induction (AVI)
  • Aircraft Recognition Induction (ARI)

  • Service Knowledge Recruit (SKR)
  • Drill and Ceremonial Recruit (DCR)
  • Fieldcraft Recruit (FCR)
  • Teambuilding Training Recruit (TTR) (non-assessable)

[edit] Basic

  • Service Knowledge Basic (SKB)
  • Drill and Ceremonial Basic (DCB)
  • Fieldcraft Basic (FCB)
  • Aviation Basic (AVB)
  • Aircraft Recognition Basic (ARB)
  • Personal Development Basic (PDB) (removed under the new system and created as an elective subject PDE)

[edit] Proficiency

  • Drill and Ceremonial Proficiency (DCP)
  • Fieldcraft Proficiency (FCP)
  • Aviation Proficiency (AVP)
  • Aircraft Recognition Proficiency (ARP) (elective)
  • Survival Proficiency (SVP) (elective)
  • Two electives of cadet's choice (must include one of ARP or SVP, can include both)

[edit] Advanced

  • Drill and Ceremonial Advanced (DCA)
  • Service Knowledge Advanced (SKA)
  • Aviation Advanced (AVA)
  • Aircraft Recognition Advanced (ARA) (elective)
  • Survival Advanced (SVA) (elective)
  • Two electives of cadet's choice (must include one of ARA or SVA, can include both)

[edit] Qualified

  • Three projects (P1Q, P2Q, P3Q) OR
  • Two projects (P1Q, P2Q) and two electives OR
  • One project (P1Q) and four electives

Note: major projects of double duration may be approved.

Note: projects may include the generic subject titled Squadron Management Elective (SME). This is where (usually senior) cadets perform executive functions within the SQN (e.g. Assistant Administration Officer, Logistics Officer etc.) or are utlised as instructors for junior cadets.

[edit] Electives (Home Training)

  • Adventure Training Elective (ADE) - only available to qualified stage cadets, it is designed to prepare candidates to attempt to achieve the adventure training award.
  • Aeromodelling Elective (AME) (not often conducted at home squadrons but on aeromodelling courses)
  • Aircraft Engines Elective (AEE)
  • Air Navigation Elective (NVE)
  • Air Power Elective (APE) (similar to APO except APE has no mandatory case study)
  • Air Traffic Control Elective (ATE)
  • Aircraft (Ground) Handling Elective (AHE) - must have completed ASE to undertake AHE
  • Aircraft (Ground) Safety Elective (ASE)
  • Bivouac Planning Elective (BPE)
  • Drill and Ceremonial Elective (DCE) - L1A1 SLR Rifle Drill. DCE can be broken into three parts which may not be run consecutively, for ease of instruction as it is a lengthy subject
     * DCE (Pt1) - basic rifle drill
     * DCE (Pt2) - rifle drill on the march
     * DCE (Pt3) - ceremonial rifle drill
  • Field Operations Elective (FOE)
  • Fire Safety Awareness (FSA or FSE - not to be confused as an advanced stage subject)
  • Firearms Training Elective (FTE) - often conducted over one or more weekends, involves safety and marksmanship training on the .22" LR
  • Hovercraft Elective (HCE)
  • Life Saving Elective (LSE) - taught by qualified Royal Life Saving Society accredited instructors
  • Meteorology Elective (MEE)
  • Model Rocketry Elective (MRE) Part 1 - includes 2 days of training
  • Model Rocketry Elective (MRE) Part 2 - includes 2 days of training, cadets must be 15 or older and must have completed MRE Part 1
  • Motor Car Awareness (MCA or MCE - not to be confused as an advanced stage subject)
  • Personal Development Elective (PDE) - previously known as PDB, this is a short public speaking course. It is not to be confused with the old Passive Defence Elective (PDE) which has not been offered in the AAFC for some time.
  • Radio Communications Elective (RCE)
  • Basic Visual Tracking Elective (VTE) - only for qualified stage cadets (although may be used in conjunction with FC and/or SV training where appropriate), a non-assessed course

Although no two promotion course subjects are identical, there are a number of similarities between some subjects/lessons on the CUO/CWOFF courses (e.g. Sword Drill, revision from JNCO/SNCO courses). In these cases, where CUO and CWOFF courses are held concurrently, the courses may be combined for these lessons
