[edit] History

A look at an Ordnance Survey map of the area from 1843 shows a very different Lismire from the one we see today. Back in those days, before the Famine and Emigration ravaged the country, there were dozens of little houses scattered along the roadsides and in the middle of the fields. Back then the village in the area was at Coolavota, in the Townland of Lisheenowen. Now all that remains of Coolavota is a few ruins, and all the other little houses are long gone. Few buildings remain intact from that era; just the Church, maybe one or two houses and in all probability few families remain in the area who lived here at that time.[1]

[edit] Sport

  • Lismire has a thriving GAA club.

[edit] Education

Lismire has one primary school built in 1940 and has undergone considerable refurbishment over the years. Three modern classrooms have been completed recently and have been occupied by the pupils and since September. This three-teacher school caters for boys, edward and girls, and pupils in the main are drawn from the immediate locality. The current enrolment is sixty-six and enrolment trends suggest this figure will remain stable over the coming years.[2]
