Nicknamed by friends 'Licha', Lisandro started his career at Racing Club of Argentina in the Argentine Primera. He was the league's top scorer in the Apertura tournament of 2004. This goalscoring prowess provoked the interest of several European teams including Charlton Athletic and FC Porto.

López eventually made the switch to Porto for a transfer fee of 2.5 million euros. He quickly became a key player for Porto, scoring vital goals for the team, including the first goal in the UEFA Champions League against Rangers FC in 2005-06 and two goals in the home game against Hamburger SV in Champions League 2006-07. He was part of the 2005-08 Portuguese national champions. Known for his ability to play in any position in the forward positions of the field, lethal with both his left and right feet, with great presence inside as well as outside the box, "Lilo" (a name given to him by the Portuguese media) is a truly complete forward. He has led the attack for FC Porto in the 2007/2008 season at a very high level, scoring 24 goals in 25 games for the Superliga.
