Re: lipase article content

It would be great if people added more information on NON-HUMAN lipases. Such as fungal and bacterial lipases.

Also, info on pH and salt optima, and uses of lipases in industry and laundry detergents (such as for removing fat stains from clothes) would also be welcome and helpful. However, if you are going to edit this page, please do your homework first. Please write professionally and consult expert academic peer-reviewed scientific research articles and/or reviews before you edit the wikipedia article. So, for instance, if you're going to tell us about the pH optima of a lipase, be sure an mention which lipase you are speaking of - there are likely millions of lipases (it is probably safe to assume at least one unique lipase is expressed by each living species on the planet, though of course, many of these are very similar to each other, as our pancreatic lipase is very similar to those of most other mammals et cetera)

Information on phospholipases and such would also be relevant, though some of that should go in the phospholipase wiki, or in specific wikipedia articles on specific phospholipases.

This article could also use more substance (and references) on physiology of lipase function in the human body -with reference to specific lipase gene products, which cells express and secrete them and how they function in the body. Lipases, in their relationship with lipoproteins such as LDL, HDL and VLDL, are likely imporant in coronary heart disease and atherosclerosis, but this needs to be researched carefully before it is written up and explained in this wikipedia article.

Perhaps there should be specific, separate wikipedia articles on specific lipases, such as HPL, fungal lipase(s), bacterial lipase(s), etc.

What about the use of lipases (whether porcine or biotechnologically manufactured) in industry?

Does anuone knows what are the optimum conditions for a lipase? What salt concentration and what pH?

HEY- I see that someone added a new section "Lipase Production & Secretion in Humans" to the article to help make it better organized. This is a good idea.

BUT

the contents are a stub!

To say: "In Humans, lipase made in the pancreas or, in smaller quantities, in the stomach and mouth. It is then secreted into the small intestine, where it begins digesting fats" is dreadfully vague and just plain wrong. "Lipase" is not one thing, there are several different enzymes that have lipase activities. SO PLEASE, if you're going to embark on a quest to extend the article, don't fill it in unless you've done your homework. -Jeremy
