[edit] Career
[edit] Sunderland
He made his Sunderland debut aged 29 on Saturday, 19 October 1996, as a sub in a 3-0 defeat at Southampton. He stayed with Sunderland for a further two years before signing for archrivals Newcastle United in what was a surprise move at the time; in the summer of 1998 he conceded 11 goals in the play-off final against Charlton (including penalties) which led to his subsequent departure from the club.
[edit] Newcastle
At Newcastle he was merely a backup to Steve Harper and Shay Given; he never made a competitive start for the Magpies and after being loaned to various clubs throughout his 21 month spell on Tyneside, he was granted a free transfer to Cambridge United.
[edit] Cambridge & Stevenage
He was released by Cambridge at the end of the 2002 season and it appeared as if his footballing career was coming to a close, however he rediscovered some form and passion for the game and joined Stevenage Borough in February 2003. He was a regular for Stevenage until in March 2004, he broke his leg playing in a league match against Barnet. He was forced to retire at the end of the season and he immediately took up a coaching role at the club.
[edit] Controversy
He was thrust into controversy in December 2005 when the football league investigated a touchline fracas, which flared when then the goalkeeping coach was sent off during Stevenage's FA Cup tie against Northampton at Broadhall Way. Match of the Day cameras caught him poking his fingers into the Northampton goalkeeping coach's eyeballs which led to his immediate dismissal. The police were also alerted to the incident. He was later found guilty by the F.A. and was handed a 2-game touchline ban; the matter was also taken to court and in February 2006, he pleaded guilty to assault and was sentenced to 100 hours of community service and ordered to pay £200 in damages and £70 in prosecution costs.
Stevenage have since parted company with him.
