Lionel Chalmers

Lionel Chalmers, Jr. (born November 10, 1980 in Albany, New York) is an American basketball player. As of July 2007, he plays for Benetton Treviso in Italy.[1]

Chalmers played his first three years of high school basketball at Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons in Schenectady, New York. He then transferred to Albany High School, Albany, New York for his senior year.

Chalmers was drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers in the second round of the 2004 NBA Draft (33rd overall pick) out of Xavier University, where he played for four years as an undergraduate and later a graduate student. As a senior, he lead Xavier to the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament. He played 34 games in the 2004-05 season with the Clippers, averaging 3.1 PPG and 1.4 APG in 12.0 MPG. He was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves on August 20th, 2005 with Marko Jaric for Sam Cassell. He played for the Timberwolves in the 2005-06 preseason, but was released into free agency before the regular season commenced.

He played in Greece with AEK Athens BC from November 2005 until February 2006 when he joined TAU Ceramica in Spain.[2]

He played for the Phoenix Suns summer league team during the summer of 2006 [3] but was not retained by the Suns. He also played for the Atlanta Hawks during the 2006 preseason. After the Hawks waived him before the regular season has begun, he signed with Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari of the Italian second division in December 2006[4]. In May 2007, Chalmers signed with Basket CAI Zaragoza[5].

In July 2007, he moved to the Serie A team Benetton Treviso.

His cousin, Mario Chalmers, is the starting point guard for the Kansas Jayhawks.
