Lionel Glenn Robert Ainsworth (born 1 October 1987 in Nottingham) is an English footballer who currently plays for Watford. He plays as a right winger and is known for his blistering pace, great agility, and his dribbling skills and trickery.

Ainsworth, who developed as a player through Derby County's academy, signed his first contract on 4 August 2005 and made his first team debut on 25 February 2006 against Plymouth Argyle. His only other first team appearance for the Rams came in a 5-0 defeat to Reading in April 2006.

He spent the majority of the 2006-07 season out on loan; initially with Bournemouth for the first half of the season, and later for a month at Halifax Town where he scored on his debut against York City. He then joined Wycombe Wanderers on loan until the end of the season, where he made seven appearances, before being recalled one game early.

He was released by Derby at the end of the season and was snapped up by Hereford United.[1] He quickly established his place in the side, scoring a hat-trick in only his second match, a 4-1 League Cup First Round win over Yeovil Town. [2] He capped a string of fine performances for the Bulls when he bagged another hat-trick in a 3-2 win at Stockport County.

In November 2007 Hereford were drawn with Leeds United in the FA Cup and, in a 0-0 draw at Edgar Street, Ainsworth came close to snatching a win for the home side when his goalward header was saved spectacularly by Casper Ankergren in the Leeds goal. In the replay at Elland Road Ainsworth's goal gave Hereford a shock lead after just 3 minutes, which turned out to be the winner. Having scored 8 goals from 19 appearances in all competitions, this made him the leading goalscorer at Hereford. This turned out to be his last match for Hereford.

On 22 November 2007, Lionel joined Watford initially on loan, with the deal becoming permanent on 5 January 2008. The fee is currently undisclosed and as part of the deal the loans of Watford players Toumani Diagouraga and Theo Robinson to Hereford were extended to the end of the season. Hereford also have first option on the services of Diagouraga.[3][4] Ainsworth has signed a two and a half year contract, keeping him with the Hornets until the end of the 2009-10 season.[5]

He has also made three appearances for England, at U17[6], U18[7] and U19[8] levels, and never finished on the losing side.
