Description

The Lion Monument (Löwendenkmal) in en:Lucerne, en:Switzerland. This monument, carved by Danish sculptor en:Bertel Thorvaldsen in 1819, commemorates the sacrifice of more than six hundred en:Swiss Guards ("Gardes suisse") who died defending the en:Tuileries Palace in Paris at the time of the overthrow of the French Monarchy on en:10 August en:1792 during the en:French Revolution. The Swiss Guards were the most senior of the thirteen regiments of Swiss mercenaries in the Royal Army and had served with distinction since the seventeenth century. The monument portrays a dying lion lying across broken symbols of the French monarchy.
