Talk:Lincoln catafalque

[edit] Kennedy
Both Jim Bishop and Vincent Bugliosi mention that in 1963, staffers weren't aware that the catafalque had been located in the Capitol basement, and a replica was built for John F. Kennedy's casket. Can anyone provide a source that contradicts this or indicates that the original was substituted for the replica at some point during the weekend? 139.48.25.61 (talk) 17:49, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
- The website of the Architect of the Capitol lists John F. Kennedy as having used the Lincoln catafalque. I have reverted your change and added the citation. I will also opin that the catafalque today consists of practically no original material as the black bunting and wood have needed replaced over the last 140 years. Perhaps that is what they meant? --Daysleeper47 (talk) 18:04, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
- I believe the bunting has been replaced, however, the original pine material is still there, but now incorporated into a larger platform to support the weight of modern coffins.
I found this quote on a website:
"General Wehle requested that the replica of the Lincoln catafalque, used in 1958 during the ceremonies for the Unknown Soldiers of World War II and the Korean War, be brought from storage at Arlington National Cemetery and set up in the White House."
And then:
"The national color detail, the clergy, the body bearers and casket, and the personal flag bearer turned right, moved in a semicircle, then turned back toward the east entrance to reach the Lincoln catafalque in the center of the hall. The family party also turned right after entering and stopped at a position near the east entrance."
Basically, it appears that a replica catafalque was used for viewing in the White House, and then the original was used for the Lying in State in the Capitol.~ (The Rebel At) ~ 18:29, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Good, constructive edits. Thanks.139.48.25.61 (talk) 19:47, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Unknown Soldiers
My question, then, is whether the Unknown Soldiers should be listed on this page? The cites above suggest that a replica was used for those ceremonies rather than the original?139.48.25.61 (talk) 19:51, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
