Talk:Lincoln Liberty engine

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hi,

Almost everything that is stated on this page is incorrect. First it wasn't Lincoln's engine but was designed by Packard with help from Hall-Scott. Lincoln did help perfect the design, especially details of the bottom end. Lincoln built over 6000 Liberty engines. Now for some facts to support me when I say the Liberty engine wasn't used in the Lincoln car. All Lincoln car engines into the 1950s were side valve, Liberty was overhead valve. The Lincoln V-8 through 1932 was a 60 degree engine, The Liberty was 45 degree. Lincoln cylinder blocks were cast in two sets of four, Liberty cylinders were seperate singles. Most of the Liberty engines were V-12 as the V-8 had vibration problems. Lincoln offered their V-12 in 1932. The Liberty V-12 is 1649 cubic inch, the Lincoln model L engine was initially 358 then through a bore increase in'28 became 385 cubic inches. I don't have much info on the Liberty V-8 but if it shared the same displacement per cylinder that the V-12 did it was 1099 cubic inches, that's quite the car engine! What the airplane and car engines did share in common was odd firing impulses and straddled, or "fork and blade" connecting rods.
