Lingo is a VoIP (Voice over IP) provider in the United States. It offers unlimited local and long distance calls anywhere in the U.S., to Canada, and to Western Europe, plus over 25 calling features. Lingo has been the subject of consumer complaints and negative reviews reporting refusal to honor refunds and deteriorating quality.[1][2][3]

Lingo, a subsidiary of McLean, Virginia-based Primus Telecommunications Group, Incorporated (Primus Telecom)(OTCBB:PRTL), provides this consumer VoIP service. Primus Telecom is a global communications company with operations in North America, Europe, Australia and Asia. Founded in 1994, Primus Telecom first entered the VoIP market in 1999 and owns and operates an extensive global network, including a VoIP network which spans 150 countries and carries nearly 2 billion minutes of worldwide VoIP traffic annually.

Lingo markets prepaid annual calling where customers pay for a whole year in advance,[4] but the financial performance of parent Primus Telecom may raise questions about the company's ability to provide a whole year of service.[5]

[edit] E911

A frequent criticism of VoIP providers is that emergency telephone number service is not available, because the physical location of a caller may not correspond to his or her listed phone number. In essence, if the phone is taken to another location, 911 emergency services is will be routed to whatever address is on the account. Lingo is compliant with FCC regulations mandating E911 capability. However, the service requires subscribers to register their address with the company and, unless the subscriber is using a UPS for backup power, it is not operative in the event of a power failure.
