[edit] History

Founded in 1962, Linganore opened to serve the largest geographical area in Frederick County. The school has been in the same building since its original construction, however 3 additions have been made, first in 1972 and then again in both 1983 and 1985.[1]

[edit] School Renovations

This year (2007) will be the last year the original Linganore building will be used. At the end of this school year, the current campus will be torn down and completely rebuilt. The new building, set to be finished by 2010, will have a 1600 student capacity and will cost approximately $53 million. While the school is being renovated, students will attend the currently under construction Oakdale High (which is scheduled to be completed in time for students to attend it for the 2008-09 school year).[2] However, the school will not be called Oakdale, but instead it will either be Linganore at Oakdale or Linganore II (as some staff members of Linganore have been referring to it).[3] As a result of this being the last year in their current building, the theme for the entire year has become "Live the Legacy", and the school has urged students to remember that, "Although this will be our last year in our current building, the legacy lives on"[4] It is surrounded by cornfields on all sides.

[edit] Academics

The school offers a wide variety of classes in a number of different areas of interest. Linganore is noted for its wide selection of Advanced Placement (AP) courses, as well as a high pass rate for those who choose to take [[Advanced placement Exams| AP exams.[5] A high school course guide for Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) can be found here. The school also offers both AM and PM CTC (Career and Technology Center) class options. Project Lead the Way (PLtW) courses, college level technology courses, are currently offered at LHS.

[edit] Notable Accomplishments

  • Linganore was nationally recognized as a Blue Ribbon school during the 1992-93 school year[6]
  • During the 2002-03 school year, a teacher from Linganore (Darren Hornbeck) won the Maryland Teacher of the Year award, the first such win for a Frederick County teacher.
