Line 5 is a line of Beijing Subway which has finished its construction at the end of September, 2007. It opened on 7 October 2007. Line 5 is Beijing's first north-south underground railway line.

Construction work on Line 5 got underway in late 2002. A number of roads around Beijing are being bolted up for the construction of underground railway stations during construction phase. The tracks were laid in January of 2006 and operations commenced on October 7, 2007.

The line runs from Tiantongyuanbei / Tiantongyuan North (near the northern 5th Ring Road) through to Songjiazhuang in the southern part of Beijing, where it is expected to link up with the Yizhuang Light Rail.

This line is the first subway line in Beijing to feature Platform Screen Doors in underground stations, Automatic Platform Gates in elevated stations, LCD screens in every stations, and modern trains that have Digital Voice Announcements and Passenger Information System that uses LCD screens.

It runs through central Beijing, passing by places of interests like Dongdan, Tiantan Dongmen (Temple of Heaven East Gate), Yonghegong and Chongwenmen. It links up with other underground lines 1 at Dongdan, 2 at Chongwenmen and Yonghegong, and 13 at Lishuiqiao.

Yikatong card, the prepaid smart card used in Beijing's transportation system, is accepted at Line 5 as well.

  • December 28, 2002: Construction on Line 5 began.[1].
  • March 28, 2004: Underground tunneling started underneath Yonghegong and Hepinglibeijie stations, heralding the start of Line 5 construction in urban Beijing. The underground tunnel would pass the Temple of Heaven.
  • May 20, 2004: The underground tunnel between Yonghegong and Zhangzizhonglu stations broke through.
  • November 11, 2005: Railway tracks were laid at Huixinxijie Beikou station.
  • July 2006: The entire underground railway was completed.
  • September 2006: Platform screen doors began installation in Line 5 stations.
  • April 2007: Line 5 started trial runs without passengers.
  • October 7, 2007, 14:00: Line 5 opened to the public.
  • November 23, 2007: Sound insulation were installed on the elevated parts of Line 5 following complaints of excess noise from nearby residents.[2]
