Line 1, Beijing Subway

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Line 1 of the Beijing subway runs from Pingguoyuan in the west to Sihui East in the east. It is the first east-west subway line in Beijing.

It runs through beneath the extended Chang'an Avenue and through the commercial areas of Xidan, Wangfujing and Dongdan.

Two stops on either side of Tian'anmen make this line the only line that runs through the core of Beijing.

[edit] History

The western section of Line 1 formed part of Beijing's first subway line. The line was extended to Xidan in 1992, and to Sihui East in September 1999. Initially, the new eastern section ran independently from the western section and the two sections only became connected on June 28, 2000. A new type of rolling stock recently arrived from the CSR Sifang Locomotive and Rolling Stock Co. Ltd. factory and is now in use. It has airconditioning, LCD and LED passenger information systems, and dot matrix destination displays. It was built to replace the aging fleet of the line.

[edit] Fares

The Beijing Subway reduced fares and simplified the fare system. A flat fare of RMB 2.00 with unlimited transfers is instituted throughout the entire system.

Before the change, fares ranged from RMB 2 to RMB 5, depending on the number of transfers.
