Mr. Lindsay H. A. Rego (September 11, 1928-) was born in Kalyanpura (Kallianpur), South Kanara, Karnataka state, India.
Mr. Rego had a unique, multifaceted career, as a forest technocrat/scientist, a senior bureaucrat in the Government of India and towards the end, as a judge/adjudicator, in civil service and administrative matters, as a member of the central Administrative Tribunal, a post equivalent to the status of a High court Judge.
F. A.O., Rome, highly acclaimed his outstanding achievement in Forestry, in a Fellowship under its aegis, in 1967. For his noteworthy, service to the Catholic Church, Rego was conferred the papal decoration, Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice, in the 1980.

[edit] Early life
Rego's father, Joaquim Rego, was also a forest officer. Kallianpur was the ancestral home of Rego's mother Lucy; she was a product of the well-known D’Souza and Aranha families of Kallianpur and Mulki respectively. Rego's ancestors were Hindus (Naik or Nayak as the family name).
Lindsay Rego completed high school from Kallianpur and passed B.Sc Biology from Karnataka College Dharwar of University of Mumbai then in 1948. Later at the Indian Forest college, Dehra Dun, where his botanical acumen won him the accolade of “Best Forester” in 1951.

Rego was a distinguished member of the Indian Forest Service, who reached the acme of his forestry career, as Inspector General of Forests, as the supreme head, in the country. Concurrently, he also held the post of Secretary to the Government of India, in the Department of Environment and Forests. In this capacity, he served meritoriously, as member of various National Committees/Boards, such as the National Environment Committee, the Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship Awards Committee, the National Wasteland Development Board, and the Indian Board for wildlife. He was instrumental in initiating landmark reforms in forestry, such as the revision of the National Forest Policy and the integration of Forestry Research and Education Research and Education into a composite Council.
Prior to the his appointment as India’s Inspector General of Forests (Indian Forest Service), he pioneered Nature Conservation and Wildlife Management on scientific lines, in the state of Maharashtra, as its First Director. He also blazed the trail, for the spread of Social Forestry in that state. During a span of nearly four decades, in his forestry career, he had the opportunity, to visit countries like Sweden, Canada and Mexico, which help widen his insight and knowledge of forestry. F. He made a mark in academics, as a scholar and writer, with many a publication on forestry and allied themes to his credit, like: “The National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries in Maharashtra”, “A handbook of Soil Conservation and Afforestation” and “Vaniki Margadarshika” (A Forestry Handbook, in Marathi for the field staff) all of which, received acclaim. Recently, he brought out his trilogy, on the following themes:

This trilogy was released in December 2007. The first book on Nature, is a fascinating kaleidoscope, in all its diverse facets. With his expertise and rich and varied experience in forestry and nature as a whole, he is pre-eminently, an eloquent spokesman in this realm. The second book, is on essays on various themes. Through felicitous prose style and lively humour, he endeavours to bring cheer and sunshine to the readers, through light, creative and entertaining topics. The third book of the trilogy, relates to spiritual themes, over a wide range, which appeal to the mind and heart of the reader, with light and power.
For his noteworthy, service to the Catholic Church, Rego was conferred the papal decoration, Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice, in the 1980.
Rego is married to Patsy Saldanha, grand-daughter of the distinguished coffee-curing industrialist Saldanha. Rego and his wife live in Bangalore.
