[edit] 1992 Shooting

Eric Houston held 80 students hostage in a classroom on the second floor of the school's C building after opening fire. He killed a teacher and three students and wounded many others in his rampage. He later confessed he was despondent over the loss of a job and was angry that his life was going downhill after his failing to graduate from high school or obtain a diploma.

[edit] Chronology of Events

Unhappy with the treatment he received while attending Lindhurst High School, Houston called his former school with a threat to "shoot up a school rally" to be held at the end of the day. The rally was cancelled. Eric nonetheless arrived on the campus with a 12-gauge shotgun and a sawed off .22 rifle around 2 p.m. He shot teacher Robert Brens, who failed him in Civics in 1989, and then Judy Davis, a current student of Mr. Brens. Houston then went down the hall and shot student Jason E. White in the chest, killing him. Further on Houston pointed his shotgun at a female student but before he could pull the trigger another student, Beamon A. Hill, pushed her aside and took the shotgun blast to the side of his head. Houston then took 70 students hostage for 8 1/2 hours before giving up to authorities.

In addition to the murdered teacher and students, Houston wounded nine other students and one adult. Mr. Brens hummed quietly to himself as he bled to death. Beamon died instantly while Jason slowly bled to death. Wayne Bogess was one of the most severely injured students, with a shotgun blast at point blank range, but he defied the odds and made a remarkable recovery.

A memorial park was erected on McGowan Parkway in Olivehurst, Calif. in rememberence of those who died or were injured that day, as reported to this editor by a local resident who was friends with Wayne Bogess and Jason White at the time of the shooting.
