(38.392258, -93.332766)According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.0 square miles (2.5 km²), of which, 0.9 square miles (2.5 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (3.06%) is water.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,026 people, 418 households, and 275 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,079.2 people per square mile (417.0/km²). There were 473 housing units at an average density of 497.5/sq mi (192.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.64% White, 0.10% African American, 0.10% Native American, and 1.17% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.78% of the population.
There were 418 households out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.7% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 30.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.95.
In the city the population was spread out with 26.8% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 23.0% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 25.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 82.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 75.9 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,595, and the median income for a family was $35,217. Males had a median income of $26,667 versus $17,500 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,803. About 6.1% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.4% of those under age 18 and 9.3% of those age 65 or over.
