The Lincoln Memorial is dramatically lit by a combination of sunlight streaming in the east facing opening which is obstructed, reflected, and scattered by the marble columns and walls and the dim and moody illumination which enters through the marbled ceiling panels.

Contents

[edit] Equipment

  • Camera: Canon 5d.
  • Lens: 50mm f/1.4
  • Shot settings: f/13, ISO 200.

[edit] Image processing chain

  • Raw conversion
    • dcraw version v8.21
    • Camera -> sRGB colorspace conversion
    • Clip pixels with any blown channel to white
    • Color balance based on gray card
  • Stitching and scaling (4px : 1px) of the images.
  • Dynamic range compression via tone mapping
  • JPEG compression

[edit] Technique

  • Camera located on nodal-point rotation mount.
  • White balance was recorded via a gray card. Because of the mixed lighting and wide FOV the perceived white balance may differ somewhat from the presented white balance away from the center of the image.
  • Twenty seven separate exposures were combined to increase the FOV and dynamic rage.
  • A level was used to measure the angle of the walls to aid in alignment and shifting of the image.

At every stage of the process great care was taken to ensure the most accurate representation possible.

The slight geometric distortion at the very top of the image is an inherent limitation of rectilinear projection for wide FOV images. The horizontal FOV of this image is 105 degrees. The optical center of the rectilinear projection is at the bottom lip of the text, dead centered horizontally.
