[edit] History
Christian metal has its origins in the early 1970s, with Resurrection Band and Jerusalem are often cited as the ealiest Christian metal bands. [citation needed] During the late 1980s, the band Stryper helped to popularize the genre. [citation needed]
There are various subgenres within Christian metal. Horde, as well as Crimson Moonlight and Antestor, for example, are considered Christian black metal (also known as un-black metal). Whitecross is considered a Christian glam metal band. Zao and As I Lay Dying are considered Christian metalcore bands. Living Sacrifice is considered a Christian death/thrash metal band. P.O.D. is a Christian nu-metal band.
[edit] Controversies
Several general-market metal bands who do not identify themselves as a "Christian band" but who still use their lyrics to portray God in a positive light. [citation needed] Additionally, there are some bands, Virgin Black and Klank, for example, who have Christian members but prefer to remain in the general market.
Some people do not feel that Christianity and its seeming antithesis, heavy metal, can be combined. This includes both fans of heavy metal music and some conservative Christians. [citation needed]
