[edit] History of an old Hussar

Dear Sir / Madam,

Please excuse me for contacting you in this way. I am a Scot who now lives in France and am retired. I have medals from the Boer War and the 1st WW and commemorative plaque to, ALFRED ERNEST HAY.

He was born in Aberdeen(shire) in Scotland on April 26th. 1879 to John and Annie Hay. He served in the Boer War as 3812 Pte A Hay with the'13th Hussars' 
and survived. The medals are complete with a letter back to his mother from Klerksdorp Transvaal South Africa on 31st Oct.1901.

The WW1 medals show that he was a 703492 Sjt A.E.Hay with the 102-CAN.INF. (Canadian Infantry, British Columbia Regiment. Formed 15th November 1915 in North British Columbia to be styled ‘Comox-Atlin by Lt.Col John Weightman Warden).The 102s left for Europe on June 20th. 1916 on board the SS. “Empress of Britain”. They arrived in Liverpool on June 28th. But did not disembark until next morning. They were kept in Britain until there crossing on the “Connaught” to Le Harve France just 5 months after their mobilisation.

I have not been able to establish when he went to Canada between 1902 and 1916, I think he had already emigrated and joined in Canada. He was killed in action I think on 19th. October 1916 but not sure where, (see 102nd web page) he is listed at VIMY MEMORIAL Cemetery at Pas De Calais, France.

I have made up a file which shows 4 medals (both sides) and the ‘plaque’ and original letter with a transcript line by line as it appears on the letter.

The QSA medal also has 5 bars /clasps, Laing's Nek, Transvaal, Relief of Ladysmith, Orange Free State, Tugela Heights. The KSA medal has 2 bars South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902.

The 2 for the Boer War as with the 2 for 1st.WW show inscriptions & ribbons. The letter to home and the commemorative plaque. All have been verified and have in no way been tampered with.
