Life Saving Victoria's mission is to prevent aquatic related death and injury in all Victorian communities and has the vision that all Victorians will learn water safety, swimming and resuscitation, and be provided with safe aqautic environments and venues.
[edit] Education
Life Saving Victoria will achieve this by working with its members, communities, educational institutions, governments, and other like organisations in the provision of best practice education, surveillance and rescue, training, and aqautic risk management services.
[edit] History
In 2004 the Australian government announced that 2007 would be officially known as the Year of the Surf Lifesaver, the first time a community-based organisation has received such an honour.
The Year of the Surf Lifesaver (YSL) marks the 100th anniversary of Surf Life Saving in Australia. YSL acknowledges the fundamental role surf lifesavers play in keeping Australian beaches safe and in the formation of Australian beach culture.
The YSL mission is to engage the Australian community in recognising the contribution of the surf lifesaver in the past, present and future and to maintain the relevance and sustainability of Surf Life Saving.
n 1907, representatives of the seven first surf clubs met to form the Surf Bathing Association of NSW, which went on to become Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA).
Since then Surf Life Saving has grown in size and significance and is now Australia's major water safety and rescue authority with more than 300 clubs and 110, 000 members.
