[edit] Summary

Description

Cover of Life magazine, December 12, 1938. Notable for being the first issue of "Life" to show a dog on the cover. The dog shown is "Blind of Arden", a champion retriever, and the image is used to illustrate the List of (famous) Labradors and specifically the entry describing the first image of a dog on the cover of "Life" (which happened to be a Labrador).

Licensing - general

This meets the Wikipedia licensing condition: "unless used directly in connection with the publication of this image" since the picture acquired fame and is included, specifically for being the first dog whose image was published on the cover of Life, rather than as an illustration of the dog in general.

The copyright is held by Life magazine, and the image is a low resolution one that is exceedingly unlikely to have a commercial effect on the copyright holder.

Licensing - NFCC requirements
  1. No free equivalent -- the image of the first cover of Life to include a dog cannot be substituted by an image obtained elsewhere.
  2. Respect for commercial opportunities -- the copyright holder is exceedingly unlikely to lose significantly by publication of a low-res copy of a 69 year old cover that has no especial mass-market appeal. Third parties already publish this cover as part of their resale trade. [1]
  3. Minimal number of uses -- Article does not heavily rely upon fair use. The majority are PD.
  4. Previous publication -- published (1938) by Life; republished by magazine resellers.
  5. Content -- Encyclopedic and meets Wikipedia criteria
  6. Media-specific policy -- complies with WP:IUP
  7. One-article minimum -- In use in one article.
  8. Significance -- A discussion of the first dog on the cover of Life will be significantly beneficial to readers seeking an understanding or appreciation of Famous Labs, and an understanding or appreciation of the first published image of a dog on the cover of Life. Removal would be detrimental to the quality of that article.
  9. Restrictions on location -- Used in article space only
  10. Image description page -- Description page contains attribution, copyright holder information, a suitable tag, and details of the articles in which it will be used and the applicable relevant rationale.

Source of scanned image:

  • The cover was scanned by [[2]] and can be found here. As a 2D scan, no creativity is involved, hence no new copyright is created in the scanned image. Having checked, I have therefore removed the small ad banner (from the bottom-left red corner), to restore the scan to the actual cover of Life.
  • An alternative source is also found complete with full text and inside photographs, here.
