Liberty News

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Liberty News TV is a quarter-annual grassroots progressive television news program produced in Portland, Maine which is shown on the progressive nonprofit cable channel Free Speech TV on Dish Network, over the Internet, and on about 80 public access channels nationwide. It is also available for podcasting as audio files on iTunes.

Written by professional journalists, the program debuted in 2005, originally aired on a monthly basis. In the program's original format, two-thirds of the program offered straight news, though with a clear progressive bias, anchored by Liz Chambers. The remaining third offered an editorial by Kevin Quinn (replaced by Daniel Noel in 2006). In 2007, the program was revamped and re-tooled, and Liberty News TV now focuses more on progressive satire than actual news gathering. Daniel Noel also became a full-time co-host. Liz Chambers was replaced by Lizzie Reinholt, who hosts the show with Noel.

Topics that the program has tackled include: The Rise of the Christian Right, Myths about Gay America, The U.S. War Machine, The Roots of Fear, Global Warming, The Truth about Sinclair Broadcasting, Defending Science, and many others. One major topic covered by the program is media criticism. Liberty News TV reports have often been critical of corporate news and media organizations such as Sinclair Broadcasting, CNN, and particularly the Fox News Channel.

The show runs on a very low budget, yet has the "look" of a professional studio setting. The set, as revealed on a local WGME news report, is located in a leaky basement, composed of lumber and a bluescreen.

Production of the program is supported entirely by donations from individuals and like-minded organizations, who typically donate via Paypal on the website, or send checks to the Portland address. Donations are tax deductible.
