[edit] History

Liberty Mountain Resort was originally developed in the mid 1960s as a focal point for a major real estate development. The name of the ski mountain and the development was Charnita, named after Charles and Anita Rist, the developer and his wife.

Charlie Rist hired Dick Brown to develop and manage the ski area. Dick Brown had just designed the neighboring ski resort, Ski Roundtop, the year before. Ten years later, the Charnita development suffered unfortunate bankruptcy. Ski Roundtop's owner Snow Time, Inc. purchased the mountain and renamed it Ski Liberty. Ski Liberty was later renamed Liberty Mountain Resort in the late '90s to be more enticing to snowboarders. Snow Time, Inc also added a snow tubing area around this time.

The resort is owned by Snow Time, Inc. which also owns two other area winter sport resorts, Whitetail Ski Resort and Ski Roundtop. These three resorts cross-promote and offer many savings-plans and coupons good for any of the three resort but at the same time maintain a monopoly on resorts within day-trip driving distance of the Washington DC/Baltimore areas.
