Liberty is a town in Center Township, Union County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,061 at the 2000 census. The city is the county seat of Union County[3].

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 2,061 people, 858 households, and 548 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,366.6 people per square mile (914.7/km²). There were 916 housing units at an average density of 1,051.8/sq mi (406.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.30% White, 0.39% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.19% from other races, and 0.63% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.44% of the population.
There were 858 households out of which 30.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.8% were married couples living together, 12.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.1% were non-families. 32.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the town the population was spread out with 24.7% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 87.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.3 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $30,296, and the median income for a family was $35,817. Males had a median income of $31,038 versus $20,430 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,440. About 8.2% of families and 11.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.5% of those under age 18 and 7.4% of those age 65 or over.

General Ambrose Burnside, Union General in the Civil War, Commanded the Army of the Potomac at the Battle of Fredericksburg in December, 1862. Born at Liberty, Indiana, in 1824 and apprenticed as a tailor there prior to entering the United States Military Academy at West Point. Prior to the Civil War, he was credited with inventing the breech loading rifle. Subsequent to the War, he served as United States Senator for Rhode Island. He also gave his name to the sideburn hairstyle.
