The Paraguayan Liberal Party was a Liberal party in Paraguay. It was founded during the 1880s to oppose the political dominance of Bernardino Caballero who founded the Colorado Party. Since then Colorados and Liberals have been competing for dominance of the country. The Liberal Party dominated the government of Paraguay from 1904 until the late 1930s, losing power largely due to the disastrous Chaco War, in which Paraguay defeated Bolivia at great cost. The Liberal Party has never recovered, and the Colorado Party kept power through military dictatorships until 1989, most notably the Alfredo Stroesner regime, which lasted from 1954 to 1989 and largely crushed opposition.
By the end of the Stroesner regime the Liberal Party of Paraguay no longer existed, but its political successor, the Authentic Radical Liberal Party is the second largest political party in the country.
