The Libera Università Maria SS. Assunta, often simply abbreviated as "LUMSA" is a private university founded in 1939 in Rome, Italy.
The LUMSA University was privately founded but belongs to the national Italian network of universities and is therefore able to confer recognised degree and diploma titles which have full legal force.
The principal aspects of LUMSA are to be found in its humanist vocation and Catholic orientation.
It has a humanist vocation because in a society which is scientifically and technologically advanced there is a growing awareness of the need for ‘wise knowledge’ which is rooted in an authentic idea of man and is able to promote progress for the real good of man and the human community.
It has a Catholic orientation because it is a free academic community which sees Christian inspiration of the Catholic heritage as a specific feature of its identity.
In particular, LUMSA strives to promote an overall education of the person and for this reason the university devotes especial care to its students and their professional and human education through the employment of constant services of direction and tutoring, and of procedures designed to give full expression to their right to engage in study.
LUMSA belongs to the national and international scientific research network and has research programmes which operate within certain specific areas: education, the social services, the philosophical, philological and literary sciences, mass communications, and the juridical sciences and economics.
LUMSA pays great attention to new professional profiles and requirements and to the emerging needs of the world of work, and is thus constantly engaged in the up-dating of its research and the teaching it offers. In this way, the university strives to make a constructive contribution to meeting individual needs when it comes to qualifications and skills, and to responding to the increasing requirements of specialisation which are ever more evident in today’s complex society.

[edit] Legal Character
The ‘Libera Università Maria SS. Assunta’ (LUMSA) arose out of the transformation of the previous University Institute which had been established by the RD of 26 October 1939, n. 1760, and subsequent modifications. The studies that are carried out at LUMSA, and the qualifications that are conferred by it, are given official legal value on a level with the corresponding qualifications conferred by state universities.
LUMSA has autonomy at the level of teaching, administration, organisation and self-regulation within the parameters established by law.
Control by the state of LUMSA is carried out by the Ministry for Education, Universities and Research.
The aims of LUMSA are:
- To contribute to the development of scientific research and the development of studies.
To prepare young people for an informed and knowledgeable integration into the world of work, with special emphasis on teaching, joining public administrations, institutional activities, and the free professions, ensuring that theoretical instruction is accompanied by suitable technical-practical knowledge.
- To foster qualified cultural, scientific and technical education based upon a humanistic conception of contemporary life.
- To promote the overall education of the person in conformity with the Christian principles of the Catholic tradition.
[edit] Organization
These are the 3 faculties in which the university is divided into:
- Faculty of Education Sciences
- Faculty of Letters and Philosophy
- Faculty of Law
[edit] Research
Research and study activities, which are the vital lymph source of every university system, are always characterised in LUMSA by involvement in cultural and scientific dialogue about the great subjects of contemporary debate.
Over the years the research activities of the faculties of the university have given rise to a great deal of individual and group research which has been flanked over time by inter-university and international research financed by public and private agencies, by structures providing such services, and by funds provided by the university itself.
At the present time research activity is organised around the various research centres of the three faculties.
[edit] Teaching
LUMSA University is characterised by the duality of tradition and modernity because it integrates humanistic and classical knowledge with economics, information technology and management, a mix that is able to meet the needs of the labour market and constitutes an ideal policy, today, to allow young people to address in an informed and responsible way the challenges and the changes of a society that is undergoing rapid and constant change. Another characteristic of this university is the emphasis it places on students deserving of financial help. Indeed, the overall level of the fees for the first income band has been made almost the same as that in state universities.
The educational supply of LUMSA is arranged around three faculties, with ten three-year degree courses, twelve specialist degree courses, one four-year degree course, three schools of specialisation, nine specialisation courses, twelve first level master’s degrees and thirteen second level master’s degrees.
