[edit] History

Soon after Independence, about half a century ago, the Red Cross Fete Committee, which was chaired by Syed Wajid Ali, raised about PKR 800,000 through Meena Bazaars organized under the guidance of Begum Rana Liaquat Ali Khan. At a fateful meeting chaired by Begum Rana Liaquat Ali Khan, the Committee decided to establish a hospital in Karachi, Pakistan under the name "The National Hospital". His Excellency Mr. Ghulam Muhammad, the Governor General of Pakistan, laid the foundation stone of "The National Hospital" on February 23, 1953.

In memory of Nawabzada Liaquat Ali Khan, the first Prime Minister of Pakistan who was assassinated in 1951, it was decided to rename "The National Hospital" as "Liaquat National Hospital". The vision of the founding members of this Hospital was to establish a healthcare unit where people of limited means could receive comprehensive medical care at an affordable cost. To achieve this goal, they constituted a committee comprising eminent citizens, philanthropists, technocrats and Government functionaries. Syed Wajid Ali was selected as the President of this distinguished group from November 5, 1958, and has remained so to date.

Over the years, this Hospital which started out with 4 outpatient services and 50 beds, grew steadily, catering not only to the rapidly increasing healthcare needs of the metropolis, but also actively supporting the medical requirements of the other provinces of Pakistan.

In 1978, the remarkable development and growth of Liaquat National Hospital (LNH) saw the institution entering into the field of education. Today, it plays a pivotal role as a leading Post Graduate Medical Centre having prestigious school of nursing, a school of physiotherapy and rehabilitation, College of Medical Laboratory Technology, and offers numerous technical courses in a vast spectrum of services.

Hence, the humble beginnings, initiated by a group of dedicated citizens almost 50 years ago, have seen the emergence of a Hospital which today stands among the best tertiary healthcare centres: a 700-bed hospital with 32 outdoor specialty services, providing the latest diagnostic and therapeutic facilities. The Hospital has a residency training program, representing a majority of the existing disciplines, recognised for fellowship by the CPSP; including certain disciplines which are also recognised by the different Royal Colleges in the U.K. Many professionals with MCPS, FCPS, FRCS and MRCP qualifications, who have been trained at LNH, are today serving the community.

Latest additions to the Hospital include the state-of-the-art MRI machines, Pathology Laboratory facilities, additional Executive II and III Wards, CCU, MICU and an increase in the number of dialysis machines and ventilators. The Hospital envisages a continuing increase in medical and surgical blocks, a new Accident and Emergency Center and an Out- Patient Department. Furthermore, a purpose-built operation theatre, Intensive Care Unit & a Transplant Unit Complex are under construction. Through the years, LNH has maintained its identity and followed its mission of providing affordable and high quality healthcare to all classes of society, with its Out-Patient Department charges being lower than most charitable hospitals in the city.

This has been possible only through the interest and guidance of the Governing Body of LNH, its administration, and, of course, the committed team of its highly skilled faculty and paramedical staff. Together, all these persons have made our vision a reality, firmly establishing LNH as a hallmark of technical excellence, never forgetting the human element of care that makes all the difference.
